1 Geometry Quarter Two Project: A Lawyer s Caseload Congratulations on opening your very own law office! This packet is full of the casefiles from the clients that you and your partner have recently taken on. Your task is to represent your clients by sifting through the evidence and creating logical and solid defenses. Due Date: Wednesday, December 7 th Directions: For each case, provide written explanations (typed or neatly written in black/dark blue ink) to defend your clients claim. Use specific examples from the case. Write explanations in a logical progression. Explain why each piece of evidence is relevant or irrelevant. Each case should be on its own paper, with the heading containing the client s name, the case name, your law office s name and both of your names. 2 Case File Name: Marston Family Fortune Client Name: Samuel Marston Case Description: The wealthy Molly Marston has recently died. An ad was put in the local paper to find a descendant that could claim the fortune. Proof of ancestry must be provided in order to claim the inheritance. Your client, Samuel Marston has brought memorabilia from his house and has hired you to help him write a statement that will convince the city officials that Samuel is Molly s grandson. Family Fortune Unclaimed City officials are amazed that the county s largest family fortune may go unclaimed. Molly Marston died earlier this week and it appears that she was survived by no living relatives. According to her last will and testament, Upon my death, my entire fortune is to be divided among my children and grandchildren. Family members have until Friday 12/9 at noon to come forward with a written statement giving evidence that they are related to Ms. Marston or her assets will be turned over to the city. Evidence: Family Portrait a photo showing three young children. On the back you see the date Newspaper Clipping an article from 1972 titled Triplets Make Music History. The first sentence reads, Jake, Judy, and Jeremiah Marston, all eight years old, where the first triplets ever to perform a 6 handed piano piece at Carnegie Hall. Jake Marston s Birth Certificate shows that Jake as born in 1964 and identifies his parents as Philip and Molly Marston. The client s Learner s Permit Samuel s permit is signed by his father, Jeremiah Marston. Wilber Marston s Passport the passport was issued when Wilbert was fifteen. Grading: Statement is written in complete sentences. Specific pieces of evidence are correctly used to explain how Samuel is Molly s grandson. Evidence is presented in a logical order. Explanation does not leave holes in the argument.

4 Case File Name: Apple Core Music Theft Client Name: Clyde Jones Case Description: The musical group Apple Core has accused Mr. Jones of stealing their original recording of their soon to be released CD Rotten Gala. According to the police, someone stole the recording from Plush Recording Studio last Saturday at some time between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM. The case is set to go to trial in two weeks. The client pleads not guilty. Statements: 1. Clyde Jones: But I don t like that music group! I wouldn t take it even if you paid me. I don t have the CD. Search me. I was at home having dinner Saturday. 2. Casey: There were several of us having dinner with Clyde at his house. He made us a delightful lasagna! 3. Mrs. Thomas: All of us at dinner with Clyde left the house at 6:10 PM. 4. Coach Teller: Clyde Jones made a wonderful goal right at the beginning of our soccer game. The game started at 7:00 PM. You can check the score in the local paper. 5. Police Officer Gates: Driving as quickly as I could, it took me 30 minutes to go from Mr. Jones s house to the Plush Recording Studio. I also drove from the studio to the field where the soccer game was. It would take Mr. Jones at least 40 minutes to get there. Grading: Determine whether each statement is helpful or not in proving your client is innocent. If it is not helpful, explain why. Use the helpful statements to create a timeline that accounts for the whereabouts of Mr. Jones each minute of the time window of the crime. Timeline can either be a visual diagram or a written explanation, but it must be organized and detailed regardless.

6 Case File Name: Campfire Kidnapping Client Name: Russ Smith Case Description: Scout leader Russ was taking his troupe: Jeff, Zac, Andrew, Danny, Alan, Ryan, and Mark camping with in Yosemite National Park. While sitting around the campfire one night, someone starts shooting tranquilizer darts at them. Russ blacks out, and when he wakes up the scouts are gone and he can t remember anything from last night! In their place was a note with a logic puzzle on it. Russ has hired you to help him solve the riddle so the children can be saved. Trick or Treat! Your scouts will remain hidden away unless you come out to play! Inside one of the logs in your camp circle are the coordinates where your boys wait for you. Inside the other logs are bombs to knock you down a size or two. The riddle below will reveal the correct one. Work quickly, or the boys will be dead by tomorrow s setting sun! 1. Jeff is sitting on the log between Zac and Andrew. 2. Danny is sitting between Alan and Ryan. 3. The scout leader is sitting at the top of the circle of logs. 4. Zac is not sitting at the top of the circle of logs. 5. Mark is to Russ s right. 6. Ryan is sitting across from the scout leader. 7. The coordinates are under Andrew s log. Fire Grading: Write the names in the correct seat and identify which log has the coordinates to save the boys!

7 Case File Name: Holiday Dinner Murder Client Name: The Durbin Family Case Description: The Durbin family was gathered for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner. Suddenly, all eight of them collapsed! A note was delivered to your law office stating that seven members of the Durbin have been given a sedative, and one has been given poison. The package also states a vial with the antidote to the poison was poured into the soup of one family member. If administered to the wrong person, the liquid will kill the person and the other family member will also die without the antidote. The names on the riddle are not the real names of the Durbin family members, so you are to work with the police to solve the riddle before the poison s affect is permanent. Time to be Thankful! The holidays are so busy; no one takes time to sleep. Right now seven Durbins rest, but when they wake they will weep! Poison has been consumed by one of the few. Was it mom, dad, a girl, Andrew? One cup of soup contains the saving antidote. Can you figure out the riddle I wrote? Beware who you serve, for if you chose wrong, two Durbins will join Hades eternal throng! Speed is sublime; the poison finishes its work in 12 hours time! 1. Rachel is to Dad s left. 2. Greg sits in the middle on one side of the table. 3. Dad and Mom always sit at each end of the table with Dad closest to the turkey to do the honors of carving the meat. 4. The three-year-old twins, Andrew and Andrea, sit on either side of Mom in case they need some help. 5. The daughters, including Christine, all site on one side of the table and their brothers, including Rob, sit across from them. 6. Rob s soup contains the antidote. Andrea was poisoned. Turkey Grading: Write the names in the correct seat, identify which soup has the antidote and which seat has the poisoned person.
