4 Perfect world The society has found solutions to problems that we don t know how to handle. What examples can you find in cinema and literature that use the utopian archetype?

9 Slow revelations A little at a time, the protagonist begins to find out things that aren t quite right. Protagonist doesn t figure it out all at once. The story reveals itself enough that the reader begins to understand. Reader usually comes to understand before the protagonist.

21 Know that the utopia archetype is can often fit the hero/quest archetype as well. As we continue to read the novel watch for both emerging archetypical structures. See if you can trace them throughout the entire novel. Utopia/Hero/Quest

24 A stranger arrives abruptly. This can happin in different ways. It may be in a literal arrival, someone new moving to town or an alien falling form the sky. It also may be a new awareness about someone who is always been there, or perhaps a person who has been there but is suddenly different. Stranger comes to town

25 Disruption of normal order Townspeople usually are wary of the stranger but quickly welcome the change. They slowly begin to understand the disruption to their world, and this cause two separate reactions usually in this order:

26 Disruption to the normal order Townspeople like the stranger and take him/her in. The welcome the change Townspeople become uneasy and rebel against the stranger. They want the old order back

27 As the rebelling mob begins to get ugly, one or more protectors emerge to help the stranger. These protectors usually have recognized that the stranger has a lesson to teach us. They learn the lesson and value it. Then they wish the others would learn it too. Protectors

28 When the stranger s work is finished, she or he must leave. With enough age and distance from the events, the narrator realizes the value of the stranger even if unable to recognize it at the time. Departure
