THE Y IN YOU 2013 ANNUAL REPORT MCGAW YMCA

OUR PROMISE We are a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. OUR CAUSE Here at the McGaw YMCA, we re not just a gym or pool. Our YMCA makes accessible the support and opportunities that empower people and communities to learn, grow and thrive. We are, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults and families. Every day the McGaw YMCA s impact is felt when someone makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child, and when a community comes together for the common good. OUR MISSION We are an open, charitable, membership association that promotes growth in spirit, mind and body through programs and services for all in our diverse community. OUR VISION We will welcome all, inspire youth, activate families and impact the community in spirit, mind and body. OUR VALUES Caring Honesty Respect Responsibility To minimize our carbon footprint, we have limited the print edition of our Annual Report in favor of an online edition that celebrates our accomplishments in an interactive and socially responsible way.

THE Y IN YOU We re more than a place. We re a cause. Dear Friends, Welcome to our latest annual report! We are proud to share the impact our YMCA had in our fiscal year with focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility. We also want to share how our community feels we have made a difference and improved their lives. Most of all we want to give much deserved recognition to our donors, volunteers, staff and members who go above and beyond to support our philanthropic mission, because quite frankly we cannot do what we do without you! We are not just places and programs and a series of activities for activity s sake. The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults and families. This is the commitment we make to Evanston and beyond, and we keep our commitments. We keep our promise to strengthen the foundations of community by living our cause. And as more of you become part of our Y, we can see The Y in You: In our Summer Learning Program, where first grader Judah gained 2 months of reading skills instead of losing skills due to a lack of summer learning opportunities. In our Move It To Lose It program, which helped Ann, a busy mom of two, take weight loss beyond the gym doors and change the way she lives her life to unlock her full potential. In our Men s Residence, which gave Mike not just a safe place to live when times were tough but a home full of friends concerned with his health and well-being. We strive to keep values-based youth programs and fees affordable by subsidizing some of the real costs. But we know that some individuals and families need financial assistance to come to the Y. Your support helps thousands of youth and families live healthier and happier lives one out of every four members received scholarships last year! They do better in school. They manage their health and fitness. And they have a safe place to call their own! When we all work together to fulfill this commitment, that s when we are at our best that s when we are truly living our cause. That s the future we see before us. And an incredibly bright and exciting future it is. That s the promise of The Y in You. Thank you for joining us on this journey. Together we can do so much more! Kirk Hoopingarner Chair, Board of Directors William F. Geiger President/CEO P.S. Membership fees pay for costs to operate the McGaw YMCA our staff, building maintenance and utilities. Your gift is what makes our programs and services accessible to all. So look for The Y In Generosity throughout the Annual Report to see the direct impact your philanthropic support makes! 1

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Nuturing the potential of every child and teen WE BELIEVE THAT ALL CHILDREN DESERVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCOVER WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE. OUR GOAL We will work to ensure that: Every young child gets the best possible start to their education. All children have access to out-of-school experiences to realize their potential. Every teen develops positive attitudes, leadership skills and productive life-long habits. OUR APPROACH We collaborate with schools and other community organizations. We provide academic enrichment and support. We encourage healthy living choices. We focus on prevention not intervention. We connect youth with positive adult role models. We incorporate developmental experiences to help kids thrive. OUR IMPACT The McGaw YMCA offers a number of substantive programs for young people to support them academically, emotionally and socially in their time when not in school. Children s Center 832 children ages six weeks through fifth grade were served children during the school year during the summer in Camp WaNaGo and Camp Rainbow. 33% received some level of fee assistance, totaling over $429,300. Tutoring 54 local children received free or low-cost supplemental literacy and tutoring services. 8 children from Dewey School received weekly tutoring for ten Saturdays throughout the summer. Over 40 America Reads tutors and volunteers donated nearly 1,600 hours. More than 50 adults and parents volunteered. 2

THE Y IN YOUTH Aren t you a Y mom? The Chatman Family: Sydney, Collin & Bernice As a preschool teacher, Courtney Chatman saw many parents take their kids out of her class to send them to the McGaw YMCA Children s Center. She had always heard good things from other parents, even before she had children of her own. So when her son was old enough, she checked out the Y to see what they could offer her son as he entered first grade. 6 years later, the Children s Center has become a very safe and familiar place for all her children, Collin, Bernice and Sydney. It s a good place. My kids love it. I like the atmosphere, I love the teachers. What they get out of it I m a single mom, especially in the summer, I m working and I can t do a lot of things that I would like to and the Y offers so many activities field trips and outside to the park, arts and crafts, I like that they are busy. They get to swim these are all the things that I wanted to do on my own, but I can t, so the Y offers that and fills in where I can t. That s why I like the Children s Center because of the leadership I see, says Courtney of how willing the teachers are to help and accommodate children. And they get the parents involved and I like that. Sometimes I see other parents on the street and they say aren t you a Y mom?. 3

HEALTHY LIVING Improving our communities health and well-being THE MCGAW YMCA BRINGS FAMILIES CLOSER TOGETHER, ENCOURAGES GOOD HEALTH, AND FOSTERS CONNECTIONS THROUGH FITNESS, SPORTS, FUN AND SHARED INTERESTS. OUR GOAL We will improve the health of this community: By supporting parents to overcome the negative effects of poor nutrition and inactivity. By connecting people to the resources they need to avoid chronic disease and live long and healthy lives. By connecting kids, teens, adults and families with opportunities that can positively influence their choices. OUR APPROACH We teach and encourage physical activity. We offer nutritional education and support. We help prevent and support disease and injury. We build connections and a sense of belonging. We encourage community involvement. We offer a wide array of family programming. We nurture total health of spirit, mind and body. OUR IMPACT Health and Wellness Committed to providing a safe, welcoming space for personal fitness, our Health and Wellness Center hired new staff and installed new equipment for the benefit of our YMCA community. Through our Move It To Lose It program, over 100 adults discovered a whole new way of life by losing weight and gaining strength. Our members gained fun, fitness and friends through 116 weekly Group Exercise classes with 85% included with membership. Family Group Exercise classes also continued to grow last year in number and popularity, bringing together parents and children in healthy activities. 554 individuals completed 8,891 Personal Training sessions to focus their fitness goals and be supported by our qualified staff. Healthy Kids Day As part of our commitment to strengthen community by addressing critical gaps in health and education, 300 kids, parents and individuals joined us in April for this free, annual event. Aquatics As part of the Evanston 150 initiatives, and partnering with District 65 and Evanston NorthShore YWCA, 110 youth from 3 title one Pilot schools participated in Evanston Swims a program that focuses on basic water safety, boating/lakefront safety and swim lessons for 2nd graders, 7 days during the school year. The Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary gave additional support as well as community volunteers, both middle school leaders and adult swim instructors, lifeguards and program leaders. The program was expanded to include Salvation Army, Family Focus and Rice Home for an additional 80 youth participants at the Y. MYST (McGaw YMCA Swim Team) 245 swimmers ages 5 to 18 took their swim skills to a new level as competitive members of MYST. Both the girls and boys teams were third overall at the Chicago Area District Championships and 12th and 14th respectively at the Illinois/Missouri Area Championship Meet. in April, four MYST high school aged girls competed at the National YMCA Championship Meet in North Carolina. Youth Triathlon 201 young athletes participated in the fourth annual McGaw YMCA Youth Triathlon on the campus of Northwestern University. Volunteers came from Kraft Foods and BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois, which also served as Platinum Sponsor for the event. 4

THE Y IN HEALTHY You see yourself differently. Ann Tharayil Ann Tharayil wasn t really expecting her world to open up so much when she started the Move It To Lose It program at the McGaw YMCA. She joined because she just wanted to lose some weight and the things that had worked in the past just weren t working any more. But Move It To Lose It accomplishes a lifestyle change, so the benefits are more than just weight lost or fitness gained. My story is probably typical of a lot of people; busy mom, two kids, working part time. I ve always worked out, but left to myself I did what I liked to do, nothing that strenuous. Understanding what and why you eat is a big part of the program s success. As Ann says, it makes you aware of the quality and quantity of what you re eating. Food journaling is an eye opener. Ann points out that she got lots of tips and tricks from others in the group, as well as the trainers, on how to avoid food pitfalls that lie in wait for busy families. [The trainers] figure out your triggers and figure out how to stop them. You take that with you beyond the gym doors and look more deeply at how you are living your life. Those connections go beyond the gym doors. As Ann puts it, they re in your head even when they aren t there. That helps her find ways to be active when she s not at the gym, and helps her make good food choices. And if she gets into a bad situation when out at a restaurant, for example, and is about to make a bad choice, she can text Steve, her current trainer, and he ll text back with advice. I think that s pretty extraordinary, that they ll extend themselves like that after hours when they re not working. They push you to do things that you think you can t, but then you find out that you can. 5

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and providing support to our neighbors THE YMCA IN EVANSTON HAS BEEN RESPONDING TO ALL OUR COMMUNITY S MOST CRITICAL SOCIAL NEEDS FOR 128 YEARS. THE YMCA FOSTERS THE CARE AND RESPECT ALL PEOPLE NEED AND DESERVE. OUR GOAL We will use social responsibility as our institutional compass: To understand and evaluate all the YMCA s programs and services. To ensure the YMCA offers the right combination of programs and services that reflect our core values, social justice and social responsibility. To tackle areas of inequality to influence real change in our community. OUR APPROACH We collaborate with agencies and community organizations. We offer critically needed programs for children and families in need. We provide financial assistance and program subsidies. We deliver targeted programs for seniors and specialty groups. We engage youth and adults as leaders and volunteers. Justin Wynn Leadership Academy 2013 Talley-Reece Award OUR IMPACT Resident Member Program With 172 rooms, our Men s Residence is the largest single source of affordable housing in Evanston and one of the few remaining at YMCAs in the country. 255 men found a safe place to call home last year, with 62 receiving over $87,000 in financial assistance. 83% of resident members have lived at the McGaw YMCA longer than a year, with 41% residing here for six years or more. About one quarter of resident members were homeless prior to coming to the McGaw YMCA and were referred to us by partner agencies in our community. Community Collaboratives Collaborating with Evanston D65, our new Summer Learning Program was extremely successful, with youth advancing an average of two months in reading ability. For 2013, the number of participants was doubled in three sites including a class in Spanish. Project Emerson launched in collaboration with Y.O.U. to support middle school career interest development over the summer months bringing industry professionals to mentor youth in video production. We expanded our partnership with Northwestern University on a new Diabetes Control Program to determine if community-based weight management programs can help adults living with type 2 diabetes improve their health and prevent heart disease. The Talley-Reece Award, named for Rev. James Talley (founder of the Emerson Street Branch YMCA) and Robert Reece (first African American board chair of the McGaw YMCA), was awarded to Justin Wynn Leadership Academy for their exceptional community service. On December 8, 2012, the cultural diversity that Evanston embraces was highlighted at the International Family Festival, another community-wide celebration. In preparation for the 2013 Youth Triathlon, 30 youth grades 3-5 from Family Focus participated in a Triathlon Training Program, receiving free bikes and helmets from partnering organization Links. Pioneering Healthier Communities-Evanston In our commitment to address health disparities in our community, the McGaw YMCA was awarded a grant under the YMCA of the USA s Pioneering Healthier Communities initiative to help our city make policy and environmental changes that will reduce childhood obesity. As the initiating collaborator, a team of leaders from the Evanston community assembled to consider what it is that Evanston needs to improve the health of its children. The PHC Evanston team is working together to implement and fund a Community Action Plan, focusing on early childhood ages

THE Y IN COMMUNITY You can make a difference at any age. Mia Sherin Mia Sherin is making a difference. She has been volunteering in our Beidler Babysitting Center, helping our staff take care of the children so that the parents can get a chance to get the exercise they need to stay healthy. Her experience illustrates how valuable volunteering can be for young people. They take on responsibilities and have to face tricky situations with calmness and maturity all crucial life skills. Mia has taken her understanding of community and of the kids a step further. Knowing that the Beidler Center relies almost entirely on donations of toys for the kids, she asked people, in honor of my Bat Mitzvah, to bring in Thomas the Tank Engine toys for the Beidler Center instead a gift for me. I m really excited because the trains were used to make a big permanent track for the kids to play with. Mia had her own personal giving page on the McGaw website, and she raised over $5,000, both in kind and financial, to honor her Bat Mitzvah and her sense of responsibility to society as a whole. Responses on her page included comments such as Mazel tov to Mia for embracing this center and making it a stimulating learning environment and Thank you, Mia, for celebrating your special day by bringing focus to the YMCA and the Beidler Babysitting Center. May your generous spirit come back to you tenfold! We believe it will we know that Mia is a great young lady who already understands how important it is to give back. 7

JOIN TOGETHER Individuals coming together to create a strong community OUR MEMBERS, DONORS, VOLUNTEERS, LEADERS AND PARTNERS ENABLE THE MCGAW YMCA TO OPEN OUR DOORS TO EVERYONE EMPOWERING ALL TO BE HEALTHY, CONFIDENT AND CONNECTED. MEMBERSHIP Each year we strive to fulfill our mission of service through our income-based Membership for All pricing that sets membership fees based on household income and the number of individuals in the household. With a total of 12,404 members from infants to 90+ year olds, our community has grown by 4% since % of members received adjusted rates and we provided $599,604 to support need-based fee reductions for memberships. We donated numerous memberships during the 2013 fiscal year to local businesses and charities to use in silent auctions or events. We continued corporate wellness partnerships with Rotary International and the Youth Job Center and added Connections for the Homeless to guide participants toward their health and wellness goals and connect them to a community that is working towards the same goals. We conducted Shed Weight Not Tears wellness challenges with both Rotary International and Evanston/Skokie School District 65 offering complimentary three-month memberships to participants as well as support resources before, during and after the challenge. VOLUNTEERS Last year, the McGaw YMCA was fortunate to have nearly 1,200 volunteers contributing to the positive impact we have in this community. That s almost 17,000 donated hours worth $318,000! Annual Fund Volunteers Over one million dollars was raised thanks to the dedicated efforts of 80 board and volunteer campaigners in Volunteer of the Year Awards Tammy Bozza, head of the MYST parent committee, for helping organize and run all of the swim meets. Sidney Caselberry, for going above and beyond as a member of the Residence committee. Catherine Rocca, for single-handedly running the Children s Center s lending library for more than 20 years. Mia Sherin, for volunteering in our Beidler Babysitting Center and asking for toys and donations in lieu of gifts for her Bat Mitzvah. David Spacek, a Project SOAR/Friend's First Mentor who has mentored the same young man since March Bill Tramel, for his long history of volunteering - serving as board chair in the 1970s and most recently at Camp Echo. Rose Johnson, receiving The Alice Kreiman Award which recognizes exemplary Board leadership at the McGaw YMCA, leadership in good governance, institutional advancement and volunteer leadership development in the Evanston community. THE MCGAW YMCA PROVIDED OVER $1.47 MILLION IN FEE ASSISTANCE AND SCHOLARSHIPS TO ENSURE EVERYONE HAS THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN, GROW AND THRIVE. 8

THE Y IN FAMILY We now have 3 generations up in our cabin! Bill Tramel With over 50 summers at Camp Echo, the magic of camp never faded for Bill Tramel and his family. At 85 years of age, Bill travels up to camp each summer to volunteer his time scrubbing, cleaning, and preparing the health clinic for campers. An Evanston native, Bill Tramel s first experience with the YMCA was as a high school student in the Jefferson Y Club. There, Bill met his closest friends whom he later invited to Camp Echo, starting a tradition of reuniting their families for Family Camp each summer. There have been a lot of firsts for us [at Camp Echo] because of the 50 some odd years up there! says Bill. He recalls fondly, my son s claim to fame at camp was going to through the dishwasher! Among the many fun memories Bill shared, his favorite moments at camp involve sharing fun and laughs with his family. Camp was just a fun period of our lives you knew everybody real well, said Bill. But my fondest memory? It was teaching my son, Kenneth, how to sail on the Sunfish at Echo. Now when we go to camp, Dad doesn t take Kenneth out sailing anymore, Kenneth takes Dad! But I think maybe that s kind of what camp is all about passing on what you ve learned to your kids and watching them put that into practice. But it s not the activities or the facilities that brings me to camp, says Bill. It s the personal relationships. I already knew my closest friends pretty well but by going to camp, I got to know their children. And that s really what camp is all about bringing people together and creating memories that will be carried on through generations. 9
