1 Cooper Chronicle Happy Valentine s Day Issue 6 February 2006 Principal s News Inside This Issue: Dr. Epperson s Message 1 Counselors, Media, Art 2 Technology, Nutrition 3 A Honor Roll 4 AB Honor Roll 5, 6, 7 Citizen of the Month 7 Upcoming Important Dates: Early Release Days February 8th & 9th 12:50 PM PTA Father/Daughter Dinner/Dance- February 10th 6:00-9:00 PM PTA Meeting February 13th 7:00PM All staff and students will be in session on February 20th-President s Day Check other dates in your Parent-Student Handbook and Calendar Dear Parents, Recently, you may have noticed a new school construction signs popping up in our cluster. Grayson is just one high growth area expected to benefit from new schools in the next building program. The program, which will address classroom needs from , is in the planning stages. It is anticipated that it will include 32 to 35 new schools. Gwinnett County Public Schools is currently purchasing property for many of these new schools, some of which will relieve schools in the Grayson Cluster. In fact, land has been purchased and signs posted regarding some of these schools, including: Grayson/Dacula Cluster ES #2, to be located at 1705 New Hope Road in Lawrenceville Grayson/Dacula Cluster ES #1, to be located at 2470 Callie Still Road in Lawrenceville Grayson/Dacula Cluster HS, to be located at 2255 New Hope Road in Lawrenceville The school system's sale leaseback of the Instructional Support Center is providing funding for two new elementary schools not included in the current building program, one of which is the proposed elementary school on New Hope Road. The two other schools listed above will be funded through the extension of the current penny sales tax for schools, which will be on the November 2006 ballot. The school system will finalize the proposed projects in the next building program and share information regarding the entire program this coming spring. The School Board is expected in late summer to adopt a resolution calling for the November vote. If passed, the school system will then begin the process for adjusting attendance lines to create the school attendance zones for those schools. There has been a new proposal by the Governor in the past 2 weeks that will have an unexpected impact on our school for next year. His proposal is a reduction in maximum class size. The proposal has Kindergarten going from 20 students to 18, Grades 1-3 from 23 students to 21, and Grades 4, 5 from 32 students to 28. If this passes and is put in place for next year, it is doubtful that I will be able to have everyone in the building next year, as I had planned, because more classes will have to be created to meet the new class size regulations. We will have to wait and see if it gets the approval and funding of the state legislature.
2 PAGE 2 Counselors Corner Together We CAN Make A Difference February will be a busy month for the counselors here at Cooper. We will be doing our personal safety program with K-5 students. In addition to that program, our second graders will be seeing the Hands Are Not For Hitting program that will be presented on February 22 nd by the Gwinnett County Solicitor s Office. Congratulations go out to Mr. Meadow s third grade class. They are the winners of the December Bee Here and Bee On Time pizza party. Keep up the good work!!!!! Fairness is never guaranteed, but a person of character will never fail to grant it. The February Chick-fil-A character word is FAIRNESS. Media Center Information The Spring Book Fair will be February 6 th through February 14 th. We will be open during the Early Release conference days. Please remember that you do not need to add tax to your purchases. A huge thank you goes out in advance to the parents who support us during our Book Fair and who volunteer their time at the Book Fair. ART NEWS You re invited to walk through our Cooper Art Gallery at our PTA meeting on Monday, February 13 th. Come see the masterpieces created by your children in Art class! Also, we apologize but we will not be able to do the First Artworks Fundraiser this year as mentioned in the November Cooper Chronicle. We hope to do it during the next school year.
3 PAGE 3 Technology at Cooper The integration of technology into the curriculum is becoming a natural component of teaching and learning. Let s take a peek at how students are using computer technology on each grade level. Kindergarten The students in Mrs. Mashburn s class created a web page! The work was completed using KidPix which Mrs. Mashburn exported as picture files for display on her website. First Grade First grade classes are using a variety of programs for learning. Mrs. Hutton s class is using Kidspiration to build a healthy diet. For math, Mrs. Williams class is using KidPix to demonstrate their understanding of math facts. Second Grade Mrs. Anderson s class used Inspiration to compare the difference between the Plains and Woodland Indians. Students in Mrs. Elmore s class shared their knowledge of planets by creating a presentation in PowerPoint, while Mrs. Skinner s class used Publisher to create an informational flyer about the planet they researched. Third Grade Ms. Trompeter s class is participating in a communications and literacy project called the Flat Stanley Project. Students create their own paper Flat Stanleys and write journal articles about him for a few days. The Flat Stanleys and the journals are sent to another participating school which could be anywhere in the world. The receiving school completes the journal and sends it back to the class along with information about their location including longitude and latitude, the weather, books they are reading, their community, special occasions, etc. Students use the location to track Flat Stanley s travels and can use the journal information to learn more about the similarities and differences between themselves and students in other states or countries. What a fun way to integrate writing and social studies. Fourth Grade Mrs. Ellspermann s students are using pictures embedded in tables in Word to practice coordinates. Her math class used PowerPoint to create a multimedia presentation on the properties of geometric shapes. Fifth Grade Mrs. Rowe s classes used Word to write poems and learned how to use the watermark and layering functions to manipulate the picture they selected to embellish their poetry. FOCUS Students in grades three and five are creating web pages about an animal they have researched as part of their marine biology unit. In the process they are learning the importance of editing their writing when you have a worldwide audience. Awesome! Terri Lathrup Technology Coordinator Nutrition February Heart Health What sound does your heart make? Does it beat in a strong and smooth rhythmic pattern? This month join the school nutrition staff and the American Heart Association in celebrating National Heart Month. By developing healthy eating patterns now, we can lower our chances of having a heart attack or a stroke in the future. Hearts are kept healthier by eating fewer greasy foods, less salt, more fiber, and a variety of foods containing carbohydrates, proteins, and other nutrients. Eat only enough calories to maintain our appropriate weight. Here are some ideas: go bike riding, go roller skating, play outside, participate in a sport, or help with housework. Do these or other exercises for at least 30 minutes each day. Work to keep the heart healthy.
