The main funcion of his device is o drive single or muliple series conneced LEDs efficienly from a volage source higher han he LED forward volage by regulaing a consan LED curren. The consan curren regulaion is especially beneficial for LED color accuracy and long LED lifeime. The buil in freewheeling diode and swiching ransisor wih curren sense requires less exernal componens and saves sysem coss. High flexibiliy is achieved by placing low power resisors o adjus oupu currens up o 700mA and he regulaor swiching frequency (yp. 200kHz). An inegraed PWM dimming engine provides a LED dimming funcion by placing a simple RC nework o GND. This feaure is dedicaed for decenralized ligh modules wihou micro conroller involvemen. In addiion o ha an inegraed saus pull down ransisor can be used o simulae a minimum curren flow for decenralized modules o avoid a wrong open load deecion by a highside swich locaed in he body conrol module (BCM). 4 Block Diagram 2 Block Diagram The TLD5045 regulaes he LED curren by monioring he load curren (Peak Curren Measuremen) hrough he inernal swich cycle by cycle. 10 5.2 Power Supply Monioring Over- and Undervolage shudown If he supply volage V REC drops below he Inpu under volage hreshold volage V REC,UVOFF, he power sage is swiched OFF and he device is in normal consumpion mode (I q,on ). If V REC rises again and reaches he Inpu under volage sarup hreshold V REC,UVON he power sage is resared and he device is back o normal operaion mode. Same behavior applies o overvolage. The inernal saus ransisor is swiching off during an overvolage or undervolage even on V REC. A deailed descripion of he under- and overvolage behavior is displayed in Figure 3 below. 11 Enable, Dimming Funcion and Thermal Proecion 6 Enable, Dimming Funcion and Thermal Proecion 6.1 Descripion Enable funcion: A logic high signal on he EN pin urns he device on. A logic low signal on enable pin EN brings he device in sleep mode. The curren consumpion is yp. 0.1µA in his case. The EN pin has an inernal pull down resisor which ensures ha he IC is in sleep mode and he power sage is swiched off in case he pin EN is exernally no conneced. Dimming funcion: The PWMI pin combines wo funcions: 1) PWM dimmming via a µc (3.3Vand 5V µc) 2) Inegraed PWM dimming engine for sandalone soluions in decenralized ligh module (frequency and duy cycle adjusable via exernal R,C nework) A deailed descripion of he PWMI pin is displayed in Figure 4 below. I is a commonly praciced dimming mehod o preven color shif in LED ligh applicaions. 14 Enable, Dimming Funcion and Thermal Proecion Inernal PWM dimming Funcion The TLD5045 has an inegraed PWM dimming engine. Via an exernal R PWM and C PWM nework i is possible o achieve a PWM LED curren waveform. The duy cycle and dimming frequency is depending on he size of he exernal componens (see formula in Figure 7). This feaure is specially designed o achieve a sand alone PWM dimming funcion wihou he usage of micro conrollers or exernal logic. This allows a flexible and cos effecive usage of he device in a decenralized ligh module applicaion (refer o applicaion drawing Figure 15). The advanage of a PWM dimming (o reduce he LED load curren) is he change of ligh inensiy only, a consan ligh color. Wih an exernal RC nework a PWM programming beween 100Hz and 1200Hz and Duy Cycles beween 4% and max. 20%. is possible. Figure 6 displays he exernal componens corresponding o he desired PWM frequency and duy cycle. During over emperaure condiion he inernal ransisor is swiched OFF. Due o he auoresar funcion of he device he saus signal will oggle accordingly. The iming of his paern is dependan on he hermal capabiliy of he applicaion and can be used o disinguish beween open load error and overemperaure condiion. More deails on he overemperaure behavior is displayed in Figure 7 below. 16 Open Load Diagnosis 7 Open Load Diagnosis 7.1 Descripion The TLD5045 has an inegraed open load during ON diagnosis. During normal operaion he pin (open collecor oupu) is pulled o GND (inernal ransisor is ON). The open load deecion is realized by monioring he swiching behavior a he SW pin. During an open load even he inegraed power sage a he SW pin will be saically urned ON. If he oupu sage is urned ON for more han he open load diagnosis delay ime ( OL ) an open load condiion is deeced. An open load even will swich OFF he inernal ransisor. If a µc is conneced o he pin an exernal pull up resisor should be placed o achieve a logic HIGH level for he proper open load error signalling reporing. 17 Open Load Diagnosis 7.3 Open Load Diagnosis in differen Applicaion Condiions Ligh module applicaion wihou µc Mos of he ime, he open load diagnosis of he whole ligh module is done via he curren sense of he driver IC (e.g. PROFET) locaed in he ligh conrol module (or BCM module). See Figure 15 for a simplified applicaion schemaic. The ligh module needs o sink a specified minimum curren (e.g. 100mA) o indicae normal operaion. To guaranee his minimum curren also under ligh load condiions (e.g. high efficiency LED bin a high supply volages = min. load curren required) sysem designers ofen have o place resisors in parallel o he applicaion circui (see Resisors conneced o supply lines in Figure 15). When using such resisors conneced beween V S and GND, an open LED diagnosis is no possible anymore. To overcome his issue an inernal ransisor (open collecor) is conneced o he pin of he TLD5045. During normal operaion he pin is LOW and a minimum module curren can be guaraneed. As soon as an open load occurs he inernal ransisor swiches off. Due o his, he curren on he V REC pin decreases below he open load deecion hreshold of he driver IC locaed in he ligh conrol module. Noe: Open Load is only deeced during he ON cycle of he swiching ransisor. During he OFF sae he signal displays wha was deeced in he previous ON sae. 18 Open Load Diagnosis 7.4 Applicaion wih µc conneced o TLD5045 IC The pin can be conneced direcly o a µc inpu. During an open load condiion he ransisor is OFF. An exernal pull up resisor conneced o V DD is required o signal a logic high signal on he pin during an open load error. Please consider ha his diagnosis funcionaliy is only acive if he device is in acive mode (HIGH poenial a he EN pin). Refer o applicaion drawing Figure 14. 19 Applicaion Informaion 8 Applicaion Informaion Noe: The following informaion is given as a hin for he implemenaion of he device only and shall no be regarded as a descripion or warrany of a cerain funcionaliy, condiion or qualiy of he device. 8.1 Oupu Peak Curren Adjusmen via R SET The exernal resisor R SET is used o adjus he peak curren of he regulaor. Maximum achievable peak curren is 700mA and minimum achievable peak curren is 100mA. The SET pin provides an inernally fixed volage level a yp.: 1.225V. Ou of his consideraions he equaion is: I peak = (1.225V / R SET ) * 5710 The facor 5710 is derived from following consideraions: Ipeak, max = 700mA (R SET = 10kΩ) Ipeak,min = 100mA (R SET = 70kΩ) Inernal comperaor volage a SET pin = 1.225V. The circuiry behind he SET pin is adjusing higher peak currens wih lower R SET values. The R SET value should be in he range from 10kΩ o 70kΩ o achieve he requesed peak curren range. To ensure a sable frequency over a broad range of inpu volage V REC an exernal resisor R COMP can be used. 22 Applicaion Informaion 8.3 TLD5045 in differen LED Applicaions TLD5045 in a Body Conrol Module (BCM) wih µc Inerface Figure 14 provides a simplified applicaion wih wo high brighness LEDs in series. A µc is conrolling he EN pin o pu he device ino sleep/acive mode. Also he PWMI pin can be direcly conrolled via a µc por if PWM dimming of he LED curren is required. The open load pin moniors he load condiion of he applicaion and gives feedback o he µc. An exernal pull up resisor is recommended o achieve a logic HIGH signal during an open load error (inernal saus ransisor is swiched OFF and he pin is high ohmic an exernal pull up resisor ensures a logic HIGH signal). The exernal low power resisor R SET is used o se he required peak curren for he LED load (refer o Figure 10 for more deails). 23 Applicaion Informaion Decenralized Ligh Module Applicaion - DLM (Inpu configuraion 1) The connecion beween he Body Conrol Module (BCM) and he Decenralized Ligh Module is realized via one supply line and one GND connecion. The supply line could change beween wo differen operaion modes: 1) Ligh Funcion 1 - Dayime Running Ligh (DRL) mode: If he supply line is permanenly ON, he DRL applicaion which requires higher LED curren (e.g. 400mA) is acive.
