2 What Do I Need to know About Harmonics? What are Harmonics? Harmonics are deviations from the ideal AC line voltage and current waveforms (see waveforms at right). Where do Harmonics come from? Non-linear commercial loads on the power system such as fluorescent lights, computers, CRT s, fax machines and other single phase office equipment. Non-linear industrial loads on the power system such as welders, arc furnaces, UPS, DC power supplies. All pulse width modulated (PWM) AC drives cause some amount of harmonic distortion. What are the potential concerns associated with harmonics? Harmonics in some cases can cause component overheating, nuisance tripping and noise transfer to other load sources. But be aware that high peak currents can cause exactly the same symptoms. When do drive installations generally create a harmonics issue? Variable speed drives are part of the non-linear load on the power system. If the non-linear load portion of the total utility feed is significantly larger than the linear load, there is a potential for harmonic distortion problems. How are harmonics and power factor related? Harmonics increase the required current supplied by the utility. The result of additional current is an increased power requirement from the utility. The percentage of usable real power (in watts) to the utility supplied apparent power (in volts/amps) is called power factor. If the total load uses all the utility supplied power, the distribution system is called unity, or 1.0 power factor. If the same load requires more utility supplied power due to harmonics or other losses, then the power factor decreases. Some power utilities may impose penalties to the user if they have to oversize their distribution system due to a poor power factor PLUS, 1336 PLUS II,1336 IMPACT, and 1336 FORCE drives with a built-in DC link choke provide a 0.95 power factor without additional hardware. The harmonics caused by the drives are compensated for by an improvement in the power factor. How do I reduce Drive Harmonics? Rockwell Automation has a wide array of techniques to achieve harmonic mitigation, which is the reduction of drive harmonics. These techniques include 6 Pulse, 12 Pulse and 18 Pulse Converters, Harmonic Filters, Active Power Filters, and Regenerative Active Front Ends. Refer to pages 6 and 7 for more specific information. 2

3 Ideal AC line input voltage waveform based on a balanced power distribution system (smooth waveform with 0% distortion) Actual Allen-Bradley 1336 PLUS II drive AC line input voltage waveform on a typical power distribution system (approximately 3-4% distortion) Actual AC line input voltage waveform from an application containing AC and DC harmonics (approximately 7-10% distortion) 3

4 Meeting IEEE Guidelines for Total Harmonic Distortion Limits IEEE is a North American standard developed from input provided by utilities, electrical equipment manufacturers, and power consumers. Total harmonic distortion limits are recommended based upon the type of installation. It is the defacto standard for power utilities, and is often required of large consumers and medium voltage systems. This specification has also become increasingly common in low voltage systems. Specific Objectives Total voltage distortion not to exceed 3% in special applications of power systems (hospitals, airports); 5% in general power systems; or 10% in dedicated power systems. Refer to IEEE standard Table 10.2 for more specific information. IEEE LIMITS Table 10.2 LOW VOLTAGE SYSTEM CLASSIFICATION AND DISTORTION LIMITS 1 Special General Dedicated Applications* System System Notch Depth 10% 20% 50% THD (Voltage) 3% 5% 10% Notch Area (A N ) Note: The value A N for other than 480 V systems should be multiplied by V/480. * Special applications include hospitals and airports. A dedicated system is exclusively dedicated to the converter load. In volt-microseconds at rated voltage and current. Total current distortion ranging from 5%-20% maximum dependent upon Short Circuit Ratio. Refer to IEEE standard Table 10.3 for more specific information. Location of total harmonic distortion measurement, commonly called the Point of Common Coupling or PCC, shall be the point where two or more users share a common utility power source. Table 10.3 CURRENT DISTORTION LIMITS FOR GENERAL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS (120V THROUGH 69,000V) 1 Maximum Harmonic Current Distortion in Percent of l L Individual Harmonic Order (Odd Harmonics) l l s c L <11 11 h<17 17 h<23 23 h<35 35 h TDD < < < < > Even harmonics are limited to 25% of the harmonic limits above. Where l s c = maximum short circuit current at PCC l L = maximum demand load current (fundamental frequency component) at PCC 1 Reprinted from IEEE standard Please refer to the actual IEEE Standard for current tables and usage instructions. 4

5 Drives Comments There are now more drives installations than ever before, therefore it s more important to understand harmonic mitigation. Drives increase the non-linear load portion of total power consumption of users When conducting a drives harmonic analysis, establishing the PCC at any point other than where the sharing of utility power occurs, is not consistent with the intent of IEEE , and may lead to the purchase of unnecessary equipment. As a major drives supplier, we believe we should educate and support users in meeting the guidelines of IEEE Actual Measurement of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) Is dependent upon utility power capacity referred to as Short Circuit Current (Isc), measured at the PCC. For calculation purposes the Isc number must be supplied by the utility. Is dependent upon existing or planned linear and non-linear loads, also called Maximum Demand Load Current (I L ), as required by the user s system. The ratio of the two quantities above (Isc /I L ) is referred to as Short Circuit Ratio. Performance Comparison of Harmonic Mitigation Techniques E F 12 Pulse Converter with Auto Transformer 12 Pulse Converter with Isolation Transformer Reasonable performance and cost effective, but does not guarantee meeting IEEE without analysis. Less component count and design complexity compared to an 18 pulse. An auto transformer will have a lower cost and smaller physical size (easier to mount in the enclosure line-up) than an isolation transformer.
