Product Introduction The KPSI 500 Series, KPSI 350 Series, nd KPSI 380 Series re high ccurcy SDI-12 submersible trnsducers. The KPSI 500 nd 350 Series use isolted diphrgm pressure sensors tht re specificlly designed for use with hostile fluids nd gses. The sensor uses silicon pressure cell tht hs been fitted into stinless steel or titnium pckge with n integrl, complint stinless steel or titnium brrier diphrgm. The KPSI 380 Series incorportes highly ccurte nickel RTD sensor into fully welded 316L stinless steel constructed housing ssembly. Different user-instllble nose cps re vilble for the KPSI 500 Series trnsducer. The closedfce end cp with #8-32UNC-2B threded hole is best used where weights re required nd for those instlltions where users my encounter shrp, protruding objects. The open-fce end cp tht llows mximum contct with the liquid medi is idel for wstewter nd gresy pplictions where clogging of the sensor is concern. A high density piezometer screen my be inserted into specilly-drilled open-fce end cps should the user decide to completely cover the KPSI 500 Series trnsducer with soil or silt. Cbling nd Wiring Most instlltions using the trnsducer connect our polyurethne or Tefzel cble to junction box. From this junction box, users run their own cble to the required instrumenttion. Polyurethne is used for most pplictions while Tefzel is recommended for highly corrosive environments. The trnsducers re intended for pplictions with requirements tht include bttery-powered opertion with miniml current drin, low system cost, nd use of single recorder with multiple sensors ttched. It will ccommodte cble lengths between sensors nd recorder up to 200 feet. The vented cble termintion end is prepred t the fctory to eliminte future moisture migrtion down its length. It my be noticed where the led wires emerge from under the jcket, tht potting mteril plus shrink tube boot hve been dded. Every effort should be mde to leve this feture intct. Should the cble be longer thn is needed for your instlltion, it is recommended tht the excess length be ccommodted in service loop nd tht the potted end of the cble NOT be shortened. The cble ttched to your trnsducer is specificlly engineered for submersible pplictions. The outer jcket provides long term relibility under most conditions. The cble should be hndled crefully, however, s the jcket my be subject to cutting should it be rked over extremely shrp edges. To gurd ginst wter incursion should n indvertent cut Cbling nd Wiring Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 3 of

Most instlltions using the trnsducer connect our polyurethne or Tefzel cble to junction box. From this junction box, users run their own cble to the required instrumenttion. To gurd ginst wter incursion should n indvertent cut occur, we hve incorported n exclusive wter block feture immeditely beneth the jcket. This feture mkes the cble selfseling in ll but the most extreme cses. The cble is fully shielded, with the shield connected to the metl housing t the trnsducer end nd terminted in blue-insulted wire t the termintion end. The shield should lwys be terminted to good erth ground, unless the trnsducer is instlled in n re where electrolysis corrosion is known to be serious problem. Surge/lightning protection is offered s n option for your trnsducer. This is chieved through the use of two (2) seprte protectors. One is locted in 4-inch long housing extension ttched directly to the non-pressure-sensing end of the trnsducer. The other protector is locted t the surfce nd grounded vi DIN-ril or ground wire. Whether lightning protection is employed or not, the cble shield is left exposed (s mentioned previously) so tht the shield my be ttched to n erth ground. sdi-12 wiring Only three wires re needed to use the SDI-12 interfce. A fourth wire (cble shield blue) is dded for user convenience. 1. Seril dt (white) SDI-12 interfce between sensors nd dt recorders. 2. Ground (blck) Supply return nd erth ground. 3. 7 Instlltion The trnsducers re designed for rugged use; however, they need protection from over-pressure nd shrp impct. They re designed to be used in verticl orienttion with the sensing diphrgm fcing downwrd. For gretest ccurcy, re-clibrtions should be performed with the trnsducer in this position. When lowering the trnsducer into liquid, penetrte the surfce slowly nd only to the depth necessry. Avoid dropping the unit from bove the surfce. Clen the trnsducer s surfce by rinsing it in mile detergent. Direct probing of the diphrgm or ttempts to remove protective screens will dmge the sensor nd void the wrrnty. Most users either suspend the trnsducer in perforted 1-inch or 2-inch PVC instrumenttion free well or ttch the trnsducer using our optionl ½-inch MNPT to rigid conduit. Some pplictions use our optionl mounting brcket (PN PC) to clmp the trnsducer to fixed object (i.e., wll, ldder, step). Alterntively, becuse our cble hs 200 pound pull strength, the trnsducer my be suspended without ny protective still well, mounting clmp, or supporting cbles. However, users often use our cble hnger. This sensor (device) slides onto the cble from the bre wire end. The cble hnger my be positioned nywhere on the cble by pushing the ends together. Once positioned, the cble hnger contrcts to provide snug grip Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 6 of

Opertion Your trnsducer ws shipped from the fctory preset to ddress 0 (zero), nd with the pressure units set to those requested in your order. However, if modifictions re required for your ppliction, you should fmilirize yourself with the steps nd commnds needed to lter the setup of the trnsducer. To issue commnds to the sensor vi SDI-12, you will need to connect it to dt recorder tht is cpble of issuing stndrd nd extended SDI-12 commnds. NOTE As the KPSI 380 Series is high ccurcy TEMPERATURE trnsducer, it does not currently support ny pressure mesurement or configurtion commnds. Nomenclture All commnds hve three components the sensor ddress, the commnd body, nd the commnd termintion. The sensor ddress is single chrcter nd is the first chrcter of commnd. In the exmples tht follow, it is usully the number 0 (the defult ddress s shipped from the fctory). The commnd body nd the responses re shown s combintion of upper nd lower cse letters. The upper cse letters re the fixed portions of the commnd the lower cse letters re the vribles or vlues. In the specific exmples, you will see tht the lower cse letters re replced with ctul numbers. All commnds re shown with n exclmtion point (!) s the commnd termintor Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 7 of

Setting the Address If you re using the sensor connected to common wiring with other SDI-12 sensors, you my need to chnge the defult sensor ddress. Otherwise, skip this section. A unique ddress ssigned to ech sensor is n bsolute requirement for multiple sensors to shre the sme wiring. When the dt recorder needs dt from prticulr sensor, it requests dt using prticulr ddress. Only the sensor with the mtching ddress cn reply. Two or more sensors with sme ddress replying will grble this reply. The fctory defult SDI-12 ddress (0) is best reserved only for single sensors operting lone on dedicted wiring. using the get/set sensor ddress commnds No other SDI-12 sensors connected to the system should be set to ddress 0 or to the desired sensor ddress. Hint If you do not know the ddress of prticulr sensor, first use the Get Unknown Address commnd to hve the sensor identify itself. Its syntx is s follows?! NOTE There cn be only one SDI-12 sensor connected to common wiring in order for the Get Unknown Address commnd to work. The SDI-12 commnd for chnging sensor s ddress is A (Set Sensor Address). An! Where is the current ddress of the sensor, n is the new SDI-12 ddress Vlid ddresses re 0 to 9, A to Z, to z. The sensor will issue reply messge in response to the commnd, if the commnd ws recognized. The messge will be the new ddress n. Note tht both commnds bove follow the SDI-12 stndrd of ending with! termintor. As n exmple, the following Set Sensor Address commnd would set the sensor ddress from 0 to 5 0A5! The sensor will respond with the new ddress, which is 5. Subsequently, the ddress cn be set to different ddress, 9 for exmple, by the commnd 5A9! 1000 Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 8 of

Verifying the Address nd Opertion The tbles below re smple commnds nd responses for the KPSI500 Other models hve the sme response for their respective model. The sensor will respond with n identifying messge when it receives the Identify commnd I. The formt of the commnd is I! Where is the ddress for the sensor The sensor will reply with 13-KPSI hhh-ssssss-vvv Where is SDI-12 ddress 13 is SDI protocol version (red 1.3) KPSI is Brnd Nme 500" is KPSI Model Number hhh is Hrdwre revision level ssssss is Sensor seril number (up to 8 chr.) vvv is Softwre version If you do not get reply, check the ddress setting for the sensor nd mke sure you use the proper ddress. Commnd (Functionl Overview) The commnds to set up nd operte the sensor re those defined by the SDI-12 specifictions Version 1.0, Version 1.1, Version 1.2, nd Version 1.3, plus extended commnds. Note ALL SENSOR COMMANDS ARE UPPER CASE. All commnds strt with single chrcter ddress nd end in n exclmtion point. The ddress is single chrcter with vlues 0 to 9, A to Z, or to z. Vlues re entered in the form of polrity sign (+ or -) followed by up to seven digits, including deciml point. The commnds re in ASCII nd ll the replies use printble ASCII chrcters followed by <CR> <LF>. The cse of the letters is importnt. An A is not the sme s n. The sensor replies to ll SDI commnds it supports. If the sensor receives commnd it does not support, no reply is mde. The reply (response) will hve one of three forms 0000 Where is sensor ddress nd 0000 indictes tht no further messge to be sent Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 9 of

tttn Where is sensor ddress, ttt is time (in seconds) sensor needs to mke the mesurement or process commnd, nd n is the number of dt vlues (limited to 9) tht my be fetched by the Get Dt ( D0 ) commnd when dt is redy. In this older form, the sensor responds second time with its ddress when the dt is redy (if ttt ws not 000). This second response is clled Service Request response. This formt is generted by older non-concurrent mesurement commnds (see M[v] commnds below) nd other older commnds. tttnn Where is sensor ddress, ttt is time (in seconds) sensor needs to mke the mesurement or process the commnd nd nn is the number of dt vlues tht my be fetched by the Get Dt ( D0 ) commnd when dt is redy. This newer response formt (in SDI Version 1.2 nd lter) does not generte the second Service Request response nd cn return lrger number of vlues ( nn ) limited to 99. This formt is generted by newer concurrent mesurement commnds (see C[v] commnds below). If you issued the Chnge Sensor Address commnd or the Identify commnd described in the previous sections, you lredy hve some experience with using commnds. There re other commnds vilble to mke mesurements, set the type of output units for the mesurements, perform specil scling of the mesurements, do field clibrtion, nd the like. The following sections describe the commnds by function. Mking Mesurement There re two clsses of mesurement commnds which will be referred to s Strt Non-Concurrent Mesurement ( M[v] ) commnds) nd Strt Concurrent Mesurement ( C[v] ) commnds). In the first clss the dt recorder issues the mesurement commnd nd then wits for the sensor to complete the mesurement before continuing the dt collection cycle. Only one sensor cn be ccessed t time nd mximum of nine prmeters cn be returned. With Version 1.2 of the specifiction, concurrent mesurements re permitted. With concurrent mesurement, the dt recorder cn request the sensor to tke mesurement, determine how long it will be until the sensor hs reding, nd then continue mking requests to other sensors on the SDI-12 bus. This wy, multiple sensors re tking mesurements concurrently. Once the mesurement time for sensor expires, the dt recorder polls tht sensor for its dt Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 10 of

strting non-concurrent mesurement (M[v] commnd) The originl commnd to tell the sensor to strt mesurement non-concurrently is M[v]! Where is the ddress chrcter, nd M[v] is Strt Non-Concurrent Mesurement commnd. An optionl digit v identifies commnd vritions. Most dt recorders will issue this commnd nd utomticlly hndle the reply to collect dt. You cn lso issue the commnd yourself. In reply, the sensor will respond with tttn Acknowledges it is from sensor with ddress, tht ttt seconds re required before the mesurement is completed, nd n vlues will pper in finl dt strem cquired. When the mesurement is complete, the sensor sends second response, clled Service Request Where Service Request response contins only, the ddress of the sensor. Note tht you still hve no dt from the sensor. To get dt, enter the Get Dt commnd to sensor Where is the ddress chrcter nd D0 is the commnd to retrieve mesured dt. Note The number zero follows D, not the letter O. Depending on the vrition of the commnd, the sensor will reply with one of these response formts v vu vvv Where is the ddress, v is dt vlue, nd u is n optionl units indictor. Both v nd u hve the formt of polrity sign (+ or -) followed by up to seven digits, including deciml point. Formt returned depends on the commnd vrition. The u indictes the units of the mesurement ccording to the following tbles 0 units re feet of wter 1 units re psi 2 units re kilopscl 3 units re cm of wter 4 units re meters of wter 5 units re mm of wter 9 units depend on user-entered scle fctors (slope nd offset) Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 11 of

If the field clibrtion offset is non-zero, then one of the following vlues of u will be returned 10 units re feet of wter with non-zero field clibrtion offset 11 units re psi with non-zero field clibrtion offset 12 units re kilopscl with non-zero field clibrtion offset 13 units re cm of wter with non-zero field clibrtion offset 14 units re meters of wter with non-zero field clibrtion offset 15 units re mm of wter with non-zero field clibrtion offset 19 user units with non-zero field clibrtion offset (psi + field clibrtion offset) * user slope + user offset set by XE or XS set by XUU set by XUU If the unit hs hd its clibrtion modified t stndrds lb other thn t Mesurement Specilties, then the vlue returned for u will hve one hundred (100) dded to it. In other words, if the XC commnd hs been utilized to set the clibrtion scle fctor (slope) to other thn 1 or the clibrtion offset fctor to other thn 0, then 100 will be dded to the unit s indictor. Strting Concurrent Mesurement (C[v] commnd) The commnd to tell the sensor to strt concurrent mesurement is C[v]! Where is the ddress chrcter, nd C[v] is Strt Concurrent Mesurement commnd. An optionl digit v identifies commnd vritions. In reply, the sensor will respond with tttnn Acknowledges it is from sensor with ddress, tht ttt seconds re required before the mesurement is completed, nd nn vlues will pper in finl dt strem cquired. Note the 2-digit nn returned llows for lrger number of dt items to be returned in the eventul dt response (though not utilized by model 500 sensor). When the mesurement is complete, the sensor does NOT issue the second response, known s Service Request response, s did n M commnd. To request the dt you must enter the Get Dt commnd only fter the first response s estimted time for completion (ttt) hs expired Where is the ddress chrcter nd D0 is the commnd to retrieve mesured dt. Note the number zero follows D, not the letter O. As in ll of the other (non-crc) M nd C commnds, D0 commnd must eventully be issued to get the dt from the sensor. In its response, three dt mesurements nd CRC ppendge re returned s follows Ipz where ( Ipz ) is the three-chrcter CRC code ppendge Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 12 of

Formt returned depends on the commnd vrition. mesurement commnd vritions To enhnce the error detection cpbility in SDI-12 dt collection systems, vritions of the Strt Non-Concurrent Mesurement commnds (M, M1... M9) nd Strt Concurrent Mesurement commnds (C, C1,...C9) re vilble. One vrition requests tht the dt be returned with 16-bit Cyclic Redundncy Check (CRC) ppended. It dds C to commnd, such s MC, MC1, CC, or CC1 The number of mesurements returned in response is the sme s the mesurements returned for non-crc commnd, but with CRC ppendge following them. An exmple of such commnd follows MC! Where is the ddress chrcter, M is bsic commnd to mke mesurement, nd C is the dded commnd letter requesting CRC ppendge. The sensor might respond with 0053 Acknowledging it is t ddress nd indicting tht fter 5 seconds, three (3) mesurements will be redy to red with D0 commnd. When n M commnd mesurement is complete, the sensor responds with n extr Service Request response. Where is the ddress chrcter Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 13 of

As in ll of the other (non-crc) M nd C commnds, D0 commnd must eventully be issued to get the dt from the sensor. In its response, three dt mesurements nd CRC ppendge re returned s follows Ipz where ( Ipz ) is the three-chrcter CRC code ppendge. other non-concurrent mesurements The SDI stndrd llows for severl other mesurement commnd vritions, such s M1, M2, nd the like. The sensor supports the following ones M1! M2! M3! M4! M5! M6! M7! Mesure psi using fctory clibrtion. Does not pply user scling, field clibrtion, or offsets. Returns 1 vlue nd the units re fixed to psi. Mesure temperture (Celsius or Fhrenheit). This returns two vlues the temperture nd the units. The units will be 0 for Celsius nd 1 for Fhrenheit. Mesure scle fctors user slope, user offset, nd field clibrtion offset. Use this if you wnt to view user-entered vlues tht cn ffect the vlue returned. Mesure clibrtion lb slope nd offset. Use this if you wnt to view the clibrtion lb vlues tht cn ffect the vlue returned. This commnd requests high ccurcy PCB (printed circuit bord) temperture. For the KPSI 380 Series, this commnd requests the high ccurcy nickel RTD temperture. This commnd requests bttery voltge. This commnd combines M0 nd M2 for both pressure nd temperture. Remember to issue the D0 commnd fter the mesurement is complete (s signled by extr Service Request response), in order to retrieve the dt Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 14 of

other concurrent mesurements The SDI stndrd llows for other concurrent mesurement commnds, such s C1, C2, etc. The sensor supports the following optionl concurrent mesurements commnds C1! C2! C3! C4! C5! C6! C7! Mesure user scle fctors user slope, user offset, field clibrtion offset. Use this if you wnt to view user-entered vlues tht cn ffect the vlue returned. Mesure clibrtion lb slope nd offset. Use this if you wnt to view the clibrtion lb vlues tht cn ffect the vlue returned. This commnd requests concurrent high ccurcy printed circuit bord (PCB) temperture. For the KPSI 380 Series, this commnd requests the high ccurcy nickel RTD temperture. This commnd requests concurrent bttery voltge. This commnd combines C0 nd C2 for both pressure nd temperture. Remember to issue the D0 commnd fter the mesurement is complete (fter estimted time for completion expires), in order to retrieve the dt Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 15 of

Chnging the Units As noted bove, ll Strt Mesurement commnds cn return the pressure in severl different units. The selection of the units is mde using the XUP commnd XUPnd! Where n is one of the selections from the following tble nd d is the signed (+) dt disply scling (number of digits to the right of the deciml point) pproprite to the new units. n Type Units Comments +0 ft of wter The conversion of feet of wter uses the fctor ft per psi. +1 psi Pounds per squre inch (defult conversion fctor = 1) +2 kp Kilopscl +3 cm of wter The conversion fctor is cm per psi. +4 m of wter The conversion fctor is m per psi. +5 mm of wter The conversion fctor is mm per psi +9 user units The vlue hs units tht depend on the fctor entered using the XUU commnd. For exmple, the following commnd to sensor 0 0XUP+0+2! will specify the output to be in the defult units (feet of wter) with resolution of 2 deciml plces. The second prmeter (2 in the exmple) is optionl. If omitted, the scling is not chnged Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 16 of

setting user units If you wnt the sensor to red out in units other thn feet of wter, psi, kp, centimeters of wter, meters of wter, or millimeters of wter you will need to use the XUP commnd to set the units to 9, user units. When user units re selected, the softwre will use the eqution Output = psi * slope + offset Where slope nd offset re vlues you cn enter into the system. The XUU commnd is used to enter the user-defined scle fctors. The formt is XUUso! Where s is the signed slope nd o is the signed offset. For exmple, the following commnd will set the slope to nd the offset to 0.0 for sensor 0, which re the proper vlues to convert the psi to cm of wter 0XUU ! Similrly, the slope nd offset cn be set to ny vlues tht will produce the desired units. NOTE Remember tht both n XUU nd n XUP commnd re required for the sensor to report in user-defined units. field clibrtion The sensor my hve chnge in the clibrtion over time. The most common chnge is chnge in sensor zero (vlue red when the pressure is 0). The sensor hs two commnds tht cn be used to djust for this chnge in zero. The XE commnd llows direct setting of n offset which will be dded to the mesurement to compenste for this drift XEou! where o is the signed field clibrtion offset vlue with units u +0=feet, +1=psi, +2=kP, +3=cm, +4=m, +5=mm, nd +9=user units. For exmple, the commnd 0XE ! would set the offset pressure of sensor t ddress 0 to 0.02 feet (u=+0). The other commnd used to set the offset is the XS commnd, nd it hs two forms. The first form cuses the sensor to mke pressure redings nd utomticlly compute new offset XS! use this form of commnd only if you vent the sensor to the tmosphere Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 17 of

Use the second form when the sensor is t stble known pressure. XSpu! where p represents the signed known pressure vlue nd u = signed units. For exmple, fter venting the sensor t ddress 0 to the tmosphere, the following commnd would cuse new offset to be computed 0XS! If the sme sensor ws under pressure nd stble t 4.65 feet of H 2 0, the following commnd would djust the offset to ensure the 4.65-foot offset 0XS ! If the sme sensor ws under pressure nd stble t 5.00 psi, the following commnd would djust the offset to ensure the 5.00-psi offset 0XS ! When the sensor hs completed self-clibrtion, the new offset is stored into memory. A response ttt1 is returned by ny of the bove commnd forms. It indictes tht commnd lst send to sensor t ddress will be complete in ttt seconds, nd one (1) vlue (offset in units of psi) will be returned in the response to subsequent D0 commnd. The offset cn lso be displyed t ny time using the M3 commnd. Remember The units for the displyed field clibrtion offset will be psi, regrdless of the units you used in the XSdu! commnd. Configuring the Averging Time setting the verging time The sensor supports user selectble verging time for SDI-12 redings. The time period in seconds is specified with the following commnd XTt! where t is the signed time in seconds The exmple commnd 0XT+10! will set the verging time to 10 seconds for sensor t ddress Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 18 of

Clibrtion The sensors undergo rigorous screening nd testing t the fctory before they re shipped, to ensure tht they meet their ccurcy specifictions over temperture. Any drift in the zero of the unit cn be esily checked by exposing the unit to tmosphere nd performing mesurement. Any drift cn be nulled out vi the XS commnd. For optimum ccurcy the offset drift should be nulled out t lest every 6 months. The therml clibrtion will remin ccurte for the life of the trnsducer. The KPSI 380 Series uses the stndrds lb clibrtion slope nd clibrtion offset coefficients during the engineering unit conversion. These coefficients cn be viewed using the M4! or C4! commnds, nd cn be djusted during trnsducer reclibrtion if desired. Contct the fctory for detils Lucs Wy, Hmpton, VA USA 27 of

Mintennce Typicl mintennce for the sensor consists of checking the wiring to mke sure it is not corroded or fryed, checking the tmospheric vent tube to mke sure it is intct nd lek-free, nd checking or setting the field clibrtion offset. Mintennce should be performed t lest every 6 months, in order to insure tht the sensor meets the ccurcy specifictions. The offset cn be checked by venting the sensor to the tmosphere nd tking reding from the sensor. If the sensor hs been subjected to more thn its mximum pressure, the offset of the unit should be checked s described bove.
