2 INTRODUCTION Sonodyne Reference is a series of high quality active speakers meant for professional, residential, and commercial applications The range: SRP Series active 2 way monitors SM Series active 3 way monitors SLF Series active subwoofers

4 WHY ALUMINUM ENCLOSURE We have high quality transducers, painstakingly matched, via DSP, to biamplifiers We want to hear the drivers, not the enclosure We could have chosen thick wood, but, we wanted a compact size too. With thick wood, there would be too little internal volume; low frequency response would be compromised So we chose aluminum which, when pressure dies cast, provides the required internal volume and rigidity It also allows for an unique shape and mounting options It also allows for a durable powder coat finish: The SRP Pro series in available in Charcoal (grey) and ivory (white) with matched wall brackets and stands
5 WHY KEVLAR WOOFERS? Woofers, besides contributing to an overall linear response, have two important roles to play! To integrate smoothly with the midrange / HF driver! To not bottom out (read: chuff) at low-low frequencies To achieve this one has to minimize cone breakup Kevlar is among the stiffest carbon based fibres and minimizes cone breakup A Kevlar woofer thus not only ensures linearity and dynamics but also the high quality component pedigree that is becoming of a true reference monitor
6 WHY HF WAVEGUIDE When we listen we do not place the loudspeaker exactly in front of us (or on axis); we always sit between loudspeakers (meaning we are off axis) You will find many speakers showing linearity on axis, but what happens off axis? Achieving off axis linearity is the true mark of a reference monitor The acoustic waveguide in conjunction with the fine-tuned DSP allows for linearity off axis This is evidenced in the polar response It also sets apart the SRP range in terms of technology; a proper acoustic waveguide is not an easy design task, and takes months to perfect
7 WHY ACTIVE? In the SRP, and SM,each transducer (driver) has its own amplifier built inside the enclosure This allows for exceptional control of the amplifiers over the transducers resulting in: Extended headroom and dynamics Overall balance and linearity Clean power; Minimized distortion Maximized extraneous noise with the with or without signal presence High CMRR due to balanced connection Exceptional channel separation
8 WHY DSP? It allows the all important crossover to be tuned perfectly so that there is a smooth transition between the drivers both in amplitude and directivity The same DSP circuit block can be used for different models having different crossover requirements. It ensures 100% accuracy and consistency for all production units; There is no dependence on a multitude of resistors and capacitors for accuracy and performance
9 WHY DSP? While CD is 16 bit, we use 24 bit resolution all through the digital processing stage. The DSP chip used in the SRP handles all processing in 56-bit double-precision mode. The D A converters used in the SRP series are 192 khz multi-level Delta-Sigma types with dynamic range of 112 db employing advanced noise-shaping techniques, and with balanced input/output stages that can handle 8 volts pk-pk The current SRP range utilizes DSP for internal processing. Future models will see:! Digital (AES) inputs! Ethernet based control and streaming! Advanced user interfaces via UI
10 MEASURED DATA ON-AXIS ON-AXIS RESPONSE is the frequency response of the loudspeaker with the measuring microphone pointed to the center of tweeter, and 90 to the speaker baffle Requires special measuring techniques and software to eliminate room reflections Should be as flat and as extended as possible Limit of deviation must be specified sometimes omitted by manufacturers to hide reality SONODYNE FREQUENCY SPECS ARE ALSO WITHIN A TIGHT +2 db (only the best products specify such tight tolerances)

12 MEASURED DATA OFF-AXIS POLAR PLOTS give information on the frequency response when the measuring mic is at an angle to the tweeter. Useful to know when the listener is seated off-axis to the loudspeaker, as in an actual setup Polar plots are generally of 2 types - vertical, and horizontal. They can be also 3-D. Polar plots are either circular, or contour type. Circular plots are for a particular frequency only. Contour plots give information at all frequencies.

15 MEASURED DATA IMPULSE RESPONSE WATERFALL PLOT shows how quickly the sound from the loudspeaker decays, at different frequencies Shows the SPL, time of decay and the frequency in one plot, hence is a 3-D plot Useful in determining whether there is any extraneous noise such as ringing etc Is a measure of how clean the loudspeaker sounds Example of SRP600 waterfall plot shown. Shows that the sound falls to -25 db within about 1.4 ms, with a few frequencies extending to 2.5 ms

17 IMPULSE RESPONSE A MODERN APPROACH WAVELET ANALYSIS Modern measurement tool to study loudspeaker transient characteristics Shows decay time of an impulse at any frequency, like waterfall Additionally, shows the time-alignment of the loudspeaker Wavelet scalogram plot of SRP 600 shown. Shows that there is no unwanted component within -25 db for all frequencies from 3 khz ~ 20 khz. Also shows very well-behaved time alignment for a 6 2-way system
