2 ARMAS Lite FM2 Product SpaceEnvironmentTechnologiesARMAS7LiteInstrument Proprietary PURPOSE The ARMAS Lite (Automated Radiation Measurements for Aerospace Safety Lightweight) Flight Module 2 (FM2) system is designed to measure the total ionizing dose of radiation within aircraft environments related to human tissue exposure from: i. Long-term exposure to background radiation from galactic cosmic ray (GCR) sources that can lead to increased statistical risk for cancer-related illness, lifestyle degradation, and death; and ii. Short-term exposure from SEPs during extremely large solar flares that can lead to increased deterministic risk for radiation sickness and death. DESCRIPTION The ARMAS Lite Flight Module 2 (FM2) system consists of two components: i. Flight instrument: The FM2 flight instrument provides real-time dosimetric measurements of the radiation environment from aircraft. Radiation dose is created by the penetration of GCRs (p, α, Fe + ) and SEPs (p) into the Earth s atmosphere that subsequently interact with neutral species (N 2, O 2 ) to create secondary and tertiary particles (n, p, e, α, π, µ, γ-rays). Measurements are made using the Teledyne micro dosimeter (µdos) UDOS001 in combination with a GPS chip, an Iridium transceiver, a Bluetooth antenna, and a microprocessor. All these are mated to a printed circuit board and provide, via an active Iridium satellite link, the current radiation environment (Si) within the aircraft. ii. Calibrated data stream: a. The one-minute real-time data are made instantaneously available via Bluetooth connection (if activated) to an ARMAS Tablet app that displays the current tissue-relevant dose and dose rate inside the aircraft. b. The one-minute real-time data packets are downlinked every five minutes via Iridium short data bursts, are processed on ground servers, and are then calibrated with the NASA NAIRAS (Nowcast of Atmospheric Ionizing Radiation System) global radiation climatology system. A specification for the most recent hour is provided for tissue-relevant effective dose and dose rates for global and regional areas, including those outside the local flight region. Data from the global radiation environment is accessible with an approximate 15-minute latency on the ARMAS tablet app, the SpaceWeather iphone app, the SpaceWx Android app, and the ARMAS web site. c. NOTE':'Blue'items'are'in'development. ARMAS Lite FM2 is packaged in a rugged housing, constructed from aircraft grade aluminum (6061), and is designed for use on research aircraft, business jet class. The FM2 unit should be physically attached to an experiment rack on the aircraft. It is used inside the cabin and activated with a VAC, 1.5A Hz AC Adaptor power supply between the ARMAS Lite FM2 unit and the experiment rack power station; serial cables connect to the aircraft GPS and Iridium antennas. ARMAS Lite FM2 is similarly designed to be hard- or soft-mounted on a research aircraft experiment rack but is small in size and mass. The ARMAS Lite FM2 flight unit is enclosed in a CNC-machined unibody aluminum case with a milled aluminum cover.
