The information presented in this manual is applicable to EDAS SAT stations using the MASTR II, IIe or MASTR III repeaters. The manual provides instructions for installing the SAT GET hardware, firmware, and software. It also provides instructions for setting up the GETs and for performing a functional checkout of the GET s. INTRDUTIN SAT is a unique application of a GET shelf that is configured as an option to an EDAS Repeater. The SAT option allows a single repeater to alternately perform the ontrol hannel or Working hannel functions. This extends the trunked operation into difficult areas such as ravines, tunnels, etc. and extremely low traffic density areas such as shopping malls. SAT systems are available for all EDAS wideband configurations: VHF, UHF, and 800 MHz. The SAT channel may be configured as stand-alone system or as part of a multisite trunking network. STAND-ALNE SAT The stand-alone SAT consists of a standard EDAS Station with the GET reconfigured for SAT operation (SAT firmware installed in the GET) as shown in Figure. In this configuration, the repeater transmits control channel information until a radio requests a channel. The SAT repeater then assigns itself as the working channel and begins routing audio. When the call is complete, the SAT channel resumes operating as the control channel. NETWRK SAT SAT GET MASTR II/IIe/III Repeater Figure - Stand-alone SAT The second configuration is a Network SAT channel used as part of an EDAS Multisite system. Each Network SAT channel requires a standard EDAS station with the SAT station option (XXP3Y). This option adds a SAT Downlink GET, SAT firmware for both the station GET and the SAT Downlink GET, and a SAT GET interconnect cable to the EDAS station. In this configuration, the SAT station is connected to the onsole Electronics ontroller or Integrated Multisite and onsole ontroller (E/IM) as shown in Figure 2. Each SAT channel has its own Downlink and audio/data interface into the E/IM. 3 The E/IM controls and routes SAT calls, allowing the user to enjoy trunking features and the same trunked user interface. The E/IM must be configured with a site interface (MSZM3R) for the SAT system. NTE In MASTR III systems, a cable (9D903880P0) is added to allow easy access to the MIII Tx and Rx Audio (J0). This cable is routed from from the MIII Interface Board J0 to the Downlink GET TB0 pins, 2, 3, and 4. PERATIN As a result of the SAT station using only one channel, only one conversation can occur at any one time through the SAT site. While the SAT site is busy, every call request (mobile request or console request) is queued. The mobile radio generates the all Hold ff queue tone and automatically places a call request upon completion of the first call. nly console request for the active group will be processed immediately. SAT operation can only be performed by radios equipped to use a SAT channel. SAT only supports late entry for group calls. The following radios are currently SAT compatable: Radio Type Software Version Alpha FMD 344A3892G4 MDR 344A427G MDX 344A4649G MPA 9D49863, 344A(3705, 3703, 445, 442, 449, 464) All Group 2 PS 344A4272G RANGR 9A49268G2 The SAT channel and SAT radios are designed to minimize the overloading of the inbound SAT channel by prioritizing all calls. This allows the system to respond to emergency calls immediately upon availability of the channel. Except for interconnect calls, all group and individual calls appear as transmission trunked calls to the radio and the E/IM. This assures the mobile s quick return to the ontrol hannel. Local interconnect is unavailable on SAT sites. However, use of the entralized Telephone Interconnect System (TIS or Jessica) is available in the multisite configuration. SAT and Downlink SAT provides the control functions to implement EDAS access to the SAT service area. The Downlink is essentially a message conduit providing a data communication path between the SAT and the E/IM. The Downlink s modem data is synchronous at 9600 baud using the full duplex operating mode. Data flows simultaneously in both directions as illustrated in Figure 3. Tx SAT Downlink Rx Data Blocks Data Blocks The SAT to Downlink format is asynchronous at 9.2K baud using the half duplex operating mode. Data flows in one direction at a time as shown in Figure 4. Since these two protocols are different, the Downlink converts from one format to the other. In addition, both the SAT and Downlink perform data error detection and correction, general control of timer and I functions (DIP switch, LED s, UART s, etc.), receive and transmit buffer management, message scheduling, and Turbo interfacing. Rx Tx E/IM Uplink Figure 3 - Downlink to E/IM ommunication BSL SAT Rx BSL SAT Rx Data Blocks R Data Blocks BSL Downlink Tx BSL Downlink Tx Figure 4 - SAT to Downlink ommunication Wide Area Digital ption The Wide Area Digital option (SXSF7A) enables the SAT station to support Digital Voice communications. A hardware option (SXMDD) provides an additional Rockwell Modem for the SAT GET. This enables the SAT GET to send and receive 9600 baud digital voice to the E/IM using the four wire audio line. HARDWARE INSTALLATIN Each SAT channel requires a standard EDAS Station with a SAT station option. The Stand-alone SAT requires a single station GET setup for SAT operation. The Network SAT requires a station GET and downlink GET. Both GETs must be setup for SAT operation. This section includes hardware installation instructions for both the Standalone and Network SAT GETs. Stand-alone SAT GET Typically, a Stand-alone SAT GET is installed in the station cabinet just above the station s radio assembly. The GET is mounted within a slide out shelf measuring.75 inches high (one rack unit) by 9 inches wide. Installation or removal of the shelf sub-assemblies involves sliding the GET shelf out of the cabinet and into the service position. This position allows access to the shelf s sub-assemblies. Install all components with the appropriate screws, nuts, and washer hardware. Refer to the MASTR II, IIe, or MASTR III Application Assembly Diagrams for detailed information on installing the GET Shelf. 2

4 bserve basic safety precautions to prevent injury or equipment damage. Network SAT GET The Network SAT option consists of a SAT GET, a Downlink GET, a GET interconnect cable and SAT firmware for both GETs. The interconnect cable provides the connection from the SAT GET to the Downlink GET using their Backup Serial Ports. Both the SAT and Downlink GETs are configured with a Turbo Board for additional memory and processing capability. Data communication between the SAT Downlink GET and the E/IM Uplink GET is carried on a four-wire, data grade, type 3002 audio circuit. As shown in Figure 2, the SAT Site is configured as a dedicated site connected to the E/IM through the Uplink GET. Therefore, the maximum number of SAT channels on a multisite network is equal to the maximum number of sites allowed on the E/IM. GET Logic Board Installation. Remove GET power. 2. Remove the Turbo Board, refer to LBI Plug the Rockwell Modem into J3 on the GET Logic Board. 4. Install four insulators (A P25) underneath the modem board and four insulators above the modem board at each screw hole. 5. Remove and discard the two nylon washers previously used as spacers. 6. Reinstall the Turbo Board. 7. Install jumpers on P-pins &2 and on P2-pins &2. 8. Apply power to the GET. 9. If for any reason a GET Logic board is suspect, refer to Maintenance manual LBI for detailed instructions on removing, replacing, and testing the GET Logic Board or the Regulator Board. Turbo Board Installation This manual assumes that both GETs have the Turbo Board installed at the factory and they are fully functional. If the Turbo Board is not installed or you encounter problems while installing the Turbo Board software, refer to LBI and SRN-00 for detailed instructions on removing, replacing, and testing the Turbo Board. Rockwell Modem Installation A Rockwell Modem is always required in the Downlink GET. Use the following procedure to install the modem if it is not already installed: NTE If the SAT station is setup to use the Wide Area Digital option, a Rockwell Modem must also be installed in the SAT GET. This allows the station to send and receive digital information to the E/IM through the audio path. a. Monitor U8 pin and adjust the receive level potentiometer R (located on the GET Logic Board) for 400 mvpp as measured with an oscilloscope (85 mvrms if using an RMS Voltmeter). b. Verify the presence of demodulated signal data at TP07. c. Adjust the transmit level potentiometer R2 for the maximum output level allowed by the phone line, microwave link, or equivalent communication line. For telephone lines, adjust R2 for.77 Vrms (0 dbm) across J6-8 and J6-9. For microwave links, adjust R2 for -0 dbm across J6-8 and J6-9. Jumper Installation There are a few jumpers on the GET Logic Board which must be re-configured depending on the GET application. To properly configure the GET jumpers, refer to Table and install or remove jumpers according to the intended GET application. 5 FIRMWARE INSTALLATIN The firmware installation procedure involves installing the latest version of the SAT EPRM (344A3835) into both the SAT GET and the SAT Downlink GET. NTE This software is subject to change resulting from improvements or enhancements. When upgrading the software, the procedures provided in the accompanying software release notes takes precedence over this manual. The P reads data from the files on the 344A444 diskette transfers the data to the Turbo Board microprocessor through connectors J03 and J04 at the rear of the GET Shelf. Running the "loade.exe" executable program serially moves data from the "etop.hex" and "ebot.hex" files to the code segment of the Turbo Board s memory. The "ecrc.hex" file provides yclical Redundancy heck (R) information for use in error checking and verification during the file transfer or "programming" process. Any errors encountered during this procedure generally indicates a defective communication link between the P and Turbo Board. NTE If an error occurs, check connectors and cables. ycle S2 and S3 from the front position, to the rear position, and again to the front position. If the P continues to indicate an error, refer to the Turbo Board Maintenance Manual LBI J3 J49 TP07 J62 J J54 J68 9D U9 S J29 U3 J72 S2 J27 Dip Switches J52 R2 U2 U4 S3 J0 S4 J5 J6 J9 J8 J7 J6 J9 J2 U Reset Switch J67 J44 U35 J55 J8 J7 J4 J20 J26 J63 J65 J64 J66 LED Indicators T R U8 J2 J50 J69 J74 J46 J73 J5 R4 R3 L L2 L3 L4 L5 L6 L7 J60 T2 J6 J25 J24 J7 J53 J28 J47 J48 J3 EPRM Installation Perform the following steps to install the SAT GET firmware. Repeat the process to install the SAT firmware into the SAT Downlink GET:. Remove power from the GETs and place the GET shelves in the service position. This will allow access to the EPRM. 2. Remove the Station GET EPRM U2. 3. Install the SAT GET EPRM into the XU2 socket (ensure the EPRM s pin is properly aligned with pin on the socket). 4. Restore power to the GET. 5. When both GETs have the SAT firmware installed, proceed to the Software Installation procedure. SFTWARE INSTALLATIN This step provides instructions for programming the Turbo Boards installed in the SAT and SAT Downlink GET. The installation process uses the software diskette 344A444, an IBM compatible personal computer (P), and an interconnecting cable (TQ-3360). SAT GET Preparation Prepare the P for programming the SAT GET Turbo Board by performing the following steps:. onnect the TQ-3360 programming cable from the P s serial port connector to the GET Shelf connector J04 (see Figure 7). If either switch is already toward the front, move the switch to the rear and then back to the front position. 5. The Turbo Board LEDs D and D2 should turn FF indicating that the Turbo Board is in the programming mode. Programming Mode This procedure downloads the Turbo Board software to the microprocessors U and U2 on the Turbo board.. Execute the "loade.exe" program on the P and follow the on screen instructions. The "loade.exe" program loads the file "etop.hex" into the Turbo Board s upper half of memory for use by the top processor U. 2. Monitor the P s on screen instructions and prompts. 3. When directed, move the TQ-3360 programming cable from the GET Shelf J04 to J The P will indicate it is loading the "ebot.hex" file into the Turbo Board s lower half of memory for use by the bottom processor U2. Normal Mode NTE Re-programming the GET Turbo Board will not alter previously stored Personality Data. When Personality Data is present, "loade.exe" clears and performs R functions over the code portion of memory only. The "loade.exe" also stores R data in the DS-2250 s memory for future data corruption checks. Upon successful completion of the programming mode, the P displays a "FINISHED" message. It will also provide instructions to switch S2 and S3 to the rear position for normal operation.. Move switches S2 and S3 to the "run" position (toward the back of the GET shelf). 2. Press S4 to reset the GET. 3. The Turbo Board LEDs, D and D2, will light indicating the station code is executing. 4. Disconnect the TQ-3360 programming cable upon successful completion of the programming procedure. For additional information on programming the Turbo Board, refer to the Turbo Board Maintenance Manual LBI and Software Release Note SRN-062. SAT Downlink GET The procedure for programming the Downlink GET Turbo board is exactly the same as the SAT GET.. Repeat the SAT GET Software Installation process for the SAT Downlink GET Turbo board. When both GETs have been programmed, proceed to the Personality Programming procedure. PERSNALITY PRGRAMMING Personality refers to the system configuration data stored in the GET s memory. The GET s Personality includes system configuration information such as channel frequencies, call parameters, operating modes, and identification information. The Personality Programming process stores the Personality data in EEPRM U35 on the GET Logic Board (SAT GET s with EPRM 344A3835G or G2). This process involves using the TQ-3357 (Version 3.00 or later) GET Shelf P programming Guide which includes the programming software. NTE This software is subject to change resulting from improvements or enhancements. The instructions contained in this manual are for guidance only. When programming the personality, the detailed instructions contained in TQ-3357 and the accompanying software takes precedence over this manual. 5

7 Preparation Software Disk 344A3466G4 Prepare the P for Personality Programming by performing the following steps:. onnect the TQ-3360 programming cable from the P s serial port connector (M/M2) to the SAT GET Shelf connector J00 (see Figure 8). After entering the personality parameters, select the "Program ard" function to program the personality into the GET. 6. Verify that the GET has properly stored the personality data by selecting the "Read Unit Into File" function while in the urrent Personalities Screen. 7. After completing the programming, save the revised personality to disk. 8. Reset the DIP switches and press S4 to reset the GET. 9. Disconnect the TQ-3360 cable and verify GET operation. E/IM Personality onfiguration At the System Manager, configure the SAT groups as TRAKED to maximize the availability of the SAT channel. As a TRAKED group, the SAT channel only receives requests from the E/IM for groups that are logged into the SAT system. The E/IM bypasses the SAT system with other multisite calls making the SAT channel available for users within the SAT system coverage area. Refer to LBI for System Manager programming. onfirmed alls NTE The personality data for SAT Downlink GET must be the same as the SAT GET. The E/IM may experience excessive delays waiting for a confirmation response from a SAT system. To prevent unnecessary delays, we recommend SAT systems be excluded from onfirmed alls. At the E/IM Manager, set the onfirmed all Parameter to "Y - Ignore Site for all onfirmation." Refer to the EDAS E/IM Manager (MM P) peration s Manual, LBI-39024, section Wide Area Digital ption The Wide Area Digital option is activated at the factory using a unique code for each repeater. This code is stored with the GET Personality. Thus changes to the personality should be made by reading the existing personality, modifying the data, and writing the modified data back to the GET. Figure is an example of the SAT Wide Area Digital Personality. PERATINAL HEKUT Verify that the GET is operating correctly by performing the following steps: DIP SWITH SETTINGS The GET DIP Switch settings depend on the GET s usage (SAT GET or SAT Downlink GET), channel, and frequency (Mastr II and IIe only).
