3 PET, glass, foil sensors Overview and advantages Detection of highly transparent containers and foils of all types of materials Various constructions Various connection variants Plastic, metal or stainless steel housing Glass or plastic optics User guidance Adjustment via potentiometer or teach function via a line Contamination compensation Prefailure message (soiling) Optimised light-spot geometry for gap detection - The size of the light spot corresponds to the size of the detectable gaps. The smallest-possible gap can be detected in the focal point of a focussed light beam. Detection of foil thicknesses < 20µm - Paper-thin transparent foils polarise the light beam and can considerably distort the measurement result for sensors with a polarising filter. Sensors without a polarising filter of type RKR are ideally suited for detecting these foils. Temperature-compensated sensor electronics - For the reliable detection of highly transparent containers or foils, a sensor setting with low performance reserve is necessary. Without corresponding temperature compensation, just a slight change in the ambient temperature would result in sensor malfunction. Certified acc. to - The Ecolab test method F&E No describes the resistance against typical cleaning and disinfection agents used in the foods industry 1

6 PET, glass, foil sensors Technology Retro-reflective sensors With retro-reflective sensors, the transmitter and receiver are combined in one housing. The beam of the transmitter meets the reflector and is redirected to the receiver of the sensor. The electrical wiring is therefore only required on one end of the light path. Models of this type are particularly well suited for the detection of extremely thin, highly-transparent foils < 20µm. Retro-reflective sensors with polarisation filter Highly reflective objects, such as mirrorlike metal parts could cause switching errors if using standard sensors. If retro-reflective sensors work with polarised light, those problems are avoided. The polarised light of the transmitter meets the reflector, which "rotates" the plane of polarisation by 90. The receiver recognises only this light from the reflector. The receiver is not tricked by "false" light reflected directly by the object because its plane of polarisation was not changed. Outputs The user can choose between NPN, PNP and push-pull type transistor outputs. It is therefore optimally compatible with the respective control system to be connected. PNP transistor outputs The PNP transistor output is a highimpedance switching output with open collector. It switches positive potential to the connected load. Indicated in connection drawing by: NPN transistor outputs The NPN transistor output is a highimpedance switching output with open collector. It switches GND to the connected load. Indicated in connection drawing by: Push-pull transistor output This type of transistor output has a low impedance and is immune to interference (push-pull technology). The outputs can be used in connection with both, PNP and NPN control systems. Symmetric response behaviour is a further advantage. Push-pull outputs must not be connected in parallel. Indicated in connection drawing by: 4

7 PET, glass, foil sensors Technology Housing Photoelectric sensors are mounted either in plastic, metal or stainless steel housings. Especially under rough operating conditions, the use of metal-type devices which offer special protection against mechanical and chemical influences is recommended. Optics The light outlet surface of a photoelectric sensor is, depending on the model, made of plastic or glass. Covers or optics made of hard glass fulfil the highest requirements. They are resistant against detergents, chemicals and scratching. To increase the effectiveness of the optics and to reduce the effects of possible contamination, glass as well as plastic optics have the largest possible surface area. Light spot Divergent beam geometry The light spot is small at close range and becomes larger with increasing range. These models facilitate the detection of small containers and gaps at close range. Focussed beam geometry The light spot is focused on a single point. The smallest gap detection is possible at a distance of approx. 200mm. At near and distant range, the light spot diameter increases considerably. Collimated beam geometry The light spot diameter remains nearly the same within the working range. The detection characteristics are very precise. Micro-triad-type reflectors are advantageous in the detection of glass containers. Autocollimation principle Reflection principle in which the light beam reflected by a triad-type reflector is incident on the device in the same optical axis. Thus, these devices are equipped with only one set of optics. Only with this optics design is it possible to reliably detect highly transparent objects at close range. Micro-triad-type reflectors have a positive effect on reliable detection. User guidance For detection of highly-transparent objects, special retro-reflective sensors have to be used. Adjustment of these sensors is normally very time-consuming and varies from sensor to sensor. With user guidance, adjustment happens without an object. Through this, a fast and always reproducible adjustment is achieved. For PET, clear and coloured glass, separate operating points are set within the sensor. Tracking: Automatic contamination compensation Sensors for the detection of transparent objects such as foils and glass surfaces are very sensitive to soiling due to their detection characteristics. The tracking function compensates for this gradual soiling. The sensor determines the current reception level and compares this with the initial reference value. In this way, the regulator compensates not only for the soiling, but also for the elevated signal level which occurs after cleaning without the need for new system calibration. It is no longer necessary to stop the machine. In addition, this tracking function makes possible automatic sensor commissioning. Commissioning calibration in the form of a teach-in is no longer necessary. The maintenance intervals are extended considerably. 5

26 PRK 8 1. Operating principle of contamination compensation (tracking function) This transparency sensor (clear-glass sensor) is a device which automatically compensates system contamination at the reflector and sensor by means of continuous measurement of the receiving level. The control rate depends on the number of gaps in the process. This tracking function increases the interval between cleaning sessions considerably. The sensor does not need to be recalibrated after the system has been cleaned. In typical applications, cleaning can be performed during system operation. This means higher system efficiency. The system is calibrated ("teach-in") once only at initial setup. The appropriate object is then selected (PE, clear glass or coloured glass). 32 RKR 18 Ex n Retro-reflective photoelectric sensors with polarisation filter Operating instructions for sensors of type RKR 18/4 DL 8.45 Ex n for application in potentially explosive areas of zone 2 and 22. The sensors produced by Leuze electronic GmbH + Co. KG for use in potentially explosive areas are sensors which function on the optical electronic principle. Without making physical contact, these sensors detect objects which are located in or which pass through the light beam. Attention! Electrical equipment may endanger humans and (where applicable) animal health, and may threaten the safety of goods if used incorrectly and under unfavourable conditions in potentially explosive areas. A safe operation in potentially explosive areas is only possible if the equipment is used properly and for its intended purpose. This requires that the installation and operating instructions are adhered to and that appropriate measures are taken to ensure that this is effectively and permanently ensured. Notes! - In order to achieve a safe operation of sensors of Group II, Category 3 in potentially explosive areas, installation and protective devices appropriate to the application must ensure that operational events do not damage or overload the equipment. Installation, Commissioning In order to comply with the requirements acc. to EN and EN , the following prerequisites must be met: - The equipment must be protected against mechanical damage (resistance to shock) by means of an additional protection device. - The connectors at the equipment must be equipped with an additional safeguard or mechanical lock to avoid unintended separation of the connectors. - The warning sign "Do not disconnect under voltage" that is supplied with the sensors must be attached to the sensor or its mounting bracket so that it is clearly visible. - The connection cable and the connectors must be protected from excessive or unintended pulling or pushing strain. Attention! - Due to the physical circumstances, the photoelectric sensors of type RKR 18/4 DL 8.45 Ex n must not be used for the protection of persons or for purposes of emergency shutdown. - The RKR 18/4 DL 8.45 Ex n sensors must only be installed and maintained by trained electricians. - The applicable regulations for the installation of electrical equipment in potentially explosive areas must be observed. Maintenance No changes may be made to the devices of type RKR 18/4 DL 8.45 Ex n for potentially explosive areas. Repairs to the sensors may only be performed by persons trained for such work or by the manufacturer. Defective devices must be replaced immediately. Cyclical maintenance of the sensors is not necessary. Depending on the environmental conditions, it may occasionally be necessary to clean the light-emission surfaces of the RKR 18/ 4 sensors. This cleaning must only be performed by persons trained for performing this task. Chemical Resistance The sensors of type RKR 18/4 DL 8.45 Ex n demonstrate good resistance against many diluted acids and bases. Exposure to organic solvents is possible only under certain circumstances and only for short periods of time. Resistance to chemicals should be examined on a case by case basis. 42 IPRK Operating principle of contamination compensation (tracking function) This transparency sensor (clear-glass sensor) is a device which automatically compensates system contamination at the reflector and sensor by means of continuous measurement of the receiving level. The control rate depends on the number of gaps in the process. This tracking function increases the interval between cleaning sessions considerably. 2. Controls and indicators 3. Sensor operation The sensor can be operated both via the AS-interface as well as via the step switch. The step switch can, to a certain extent, be switched off via the AS-interface. In all cases, the teach-in function of the step switch is retained. Release of the step switch is indicated by the LED 3 = off behind the AS-i symbol (DO0=0 and DO1=0). In this mode, the ASinterface only affects parameters P 0 and P 1 as these functions directly affect the switching output DI 0. The functions DO 2 and P 2 are inactive (blocked) in this case. When switching from AS-interface to the step switch, the current step-switch setting is activated, i.e. the device switches to the corresponding mode (1,2,3 or teach-in). The tracking function remains in the last setting set by the AS-interface. The switching of the performance reserve is effective only after a started teach process (via AS-interface and/or step switch) has been concluded. If the device is switched during a teach process from the step-switch mode to the AS-i mode, this teach process restarts after 2 seconds. 4.
