1 A New Carrier Frequency Offset Estimation Algorithm for ASTC MIMO OFDM Based System Geethapriya, Sundara Balaji, Sriram & Dinesh Kumar KLNCIT Abstract - This paper presents a new Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO) estimation for Algebraic Space Time Code (ASTC) Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) System. In this technique ASTC with golden encoder is used, by this we achieve full rate and full diversity. This system also provides notable improvement in performance by using all subcarriers in the frequency domain. This is achieved by Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing. The orthogonal training sequence are simultaneously transmitted and received from multiple antennas. The receiver estimates CFO by using special algorithm for the range from -1 to 1 of values. Keywords - Algebraic Space Time code (ASTC), Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO). I. INTRODUCTION Nowadays, 4G broadband wireless technology usages are growing day by day and providing high data rate services like video conferencing and multimedia in wideband channels has been increased. High data rate schemes can be provided through Algebraic Space Time Coding (ASTC). But, they require a flat-fading channel to correctly function. So it is necessary to harness their power for wideband systems. The space time codes have good performance, but they suffer from the non-uniform distribution of the energy in the code word. To alleviate this problem, a new family of ASTCs has been proposed in [1] and [2], which have a structure of full-rate and full-diversity 2 2, 3 3, 4 4, and 6 6 space time codes. These codes have a constant minimum determinant as spectral efficiency increases. The name perfect space time codes, which is used for these codes, is suggested by the fact that they satisfy a large number of design criteria and only appear in a few special cases of the classical perfect error-correcting codes, achieving the Hamming sphere packing bound. In this paper, we will use 2 2 and 4 4 perfect codes. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted in the wireless local area network standards IEEE a [3] and g [4] due to its high spectral efficiency and ability to deal with frequency-selective fading. The combination of OFDM with spectrally efficient multiple-antenna techniques makes the OFDM a good candidate to overcome the frequency selective problems for the perfect 2 2 and 4 4 ASTC codes. Despite the attractive features of both OFDM and ASTC, they are very sensitive to transmitter receiver synchronization imperfections [5]. Thus, the synchronization is crucial for ASTC-multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-OFDM-based systems. Frequency synchronization errors destroy the orthogonality among the subcarriers, which results in inter carrier interference (ICI) [6]. Therefore, an accurate carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation is essential for OFDM receiver design. Various carrier synchronization schemes have been proposed for singleinput single-output OFDM systems. Some schemes rely on pilot or preamble data [8] [14], and some use the inherent structure of the OFDM symbol in either frequency [15] or time domain [16]. For multipleantenna OFDM, data-aided schemes are proposed for receiver diversity and MIMO in [17] and [18], respectively. A blind method for receiver diversity combined with OFDM is proposed in [19]. II. SYSTEM MODEL Our system model consists of Algebraic Space Time Code encoder and decoder; Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing modulator and demodulator; Multiple Input Multiple Output transmitting and 76

2 receiving antennas. These models are explained in following sections. A. MIMO OFDM MODEL The Input data generated as random and mapped as QPSK. Here 128 data bits are generated. A multicarrier system can be efficiently implemented in discrete time using an inverse DFT (IDFT) to act as a modulator and an DFT to act as a demodulator. The transmitted data are the frequency domain coefficients and the samples at the output of the IFFT stage are time domain samples of the transmitted wave form. Fig. 1 shows a typical MIMO-OFDM implementation. variation, we introduce the best perfect algebraic code known as Golden codes with other tow well famous algebraic space time codes, TAST and DAST. 1) Golden Encoder: The code is a STBC obtained using a division algebra, which is full rate, full diversity, and has a nonzero lower bound on its coding gain, which does not depend on the constellation size. The code word in the form of 2 2 is written as: (1) 2) TAST Encoder: The TAST code is a space time algebraic code obtained using the integer algebra, with rate R = Nt = 2 Symbole/uc(usedcodeword), and diversity D = Nt Nr = 4. Each space time layer is associated with his proper algebraic space ' in order to alleviate the problem of ISI (Inter-Symbol-Interferences). The code word in the form 2 2 is expressed as: Fig. 1 : ASTC-MIMO-OFDM system model B. ASTC ENCODERS Each information in the sequence of data at time n i is encoded by the ASTC encoder into two stream constellations represented by the code word X Nc N t where N t refers to number of transmitted antennas and N c is the number of used subcarriers. By their construction the channel was under the Quasi-Static assumption, and does not take into account neither the time variation nor the selectivity channel case. CARRIER FREQUENCY OFFSET ESTIMATION ALGORITHM In the equation (6)r x is the received signal with offset and the symbol carries values less than 1. The Carrier Frequency Offset can be estimated from the equation (7) and it is the estimated Carrier Frequency Offset. This estimation can be done with any of the Algebraic Space Time Code encoders like Tast, Dast and Golden encoders. IV. SIMULATION RESULTS AND DISCUSSION We consider an OFDM orthogonal pilot symbol with a total of N = 128 subcarriers and no virtual subcarriers. Here we use two antennas at both transmitter and receiver side. So, number of transmitter n t is 2 and number of receiver n r is 2. The data generated are in the form of a row vector and size if the vector is The simulation results are as follows. In Carrier Frequency Offset estimation algorithm the first step is receiving the transmitted signal. The received signal has interference and noise with it. The received signal r x with noise can be represented as given below. r x = N 1 k=1 u k is the OFDM output. w is the AWGN noise. u k + w (5) In this equation w is additive noise with the received signal. From this the Carrier Frequency Offset should be estimated. The following equations explain how the CFO is estimated from the received signal. This equation represent received signal with offset. r x is the received signal. r x = r x e jπ (6) is the offset. The result shows the variation between the data with interference and without interference before transmission. The final figure shows the comparison between the estimated CFO and the Normalized CFO. V. CONCLUSION This paper presented a new algebraic CFO estimation technique for MIMO-OFDM systems over frequency-selective fading channels employing ASTCs. The CFO was estimated by simple algorithm.
