I fulfils he requiremen of minimum exernal conrol circuiry for a flyback applicaion. Curren mode conrol means ha he curren hrough he CoolMOS ransisor is compared wih a reference signal derived from he oupu volage of he flyback applicaion. The resul of ha comparision deermines he onime of he CoolMOS ransisor. The accuracy of he swiching frequency is highly sophisicaed due o emperaure compensaion. Furhermore overload and open loop proecion is implemened by sensing he feedback line. This means in case of overload or open loop he IC is working in proecion mode. 11 4 Operaion Descripion Power Managemen The undervolage lockou moniors he exernal supply volage V CC. When V CC exceeds he onhreshold V CCon =14V, he inernal bias circui and he volage reference are swiched on. Addiionally he errorlach in he proecion uni is rese. The inernal bandgap generaes a reference volage V REF =6.55V o supply he inernal circuis. When V CC falls below he offhreshold V CCoff =9V he circui is swiched off. Then he power down rese discharges he sofsar capacior C SofSar a pin SofS by swiching on T 1. During sar up he curren consumpion is only abou 100uA. Improved Curren Mode PWMOP The inpu of he PWMOP is applied o he exernal sense resisor R Sense conneced o pin ISense. R Sense allows an individual adjusmen of maximum CoolMOS source curren wih very low olerance of maximum curren hreshold. R Sense convers he source curren of he CoolMOS ino a sense volage. The sense volage is amplified wih a gain of Then he amplified signal is superimposed on a virual ramp of 0.8V. Under low load condiions he source curren of he CoolMOS is insufficien o buil a volage ramp for he PWMComparaor. To guaraned a proper operaion a low load he virual ramp is he reference signal for he PWMComparaor. The oupu of he PWMOP is conneced o he posiive inpus of he PWMComparaor and he SofSarComparaor. PWMComparaor The PWMComparaor compares he sensed curren signal of he CoolMOS wih he feedback signal V FB. V FB is creaed by an exernal opocoupler or exernal ransisor in combinaion wih he inernal pullup resisor R FB and provides he informaion of he feedback circuiry. When he amplified curren signal of he CoolMOS exceeds he signal V FB he PWM Comparaor swiches off he CoolMOS. SofSar The SofSar is realized by he inernal SofSar Comparaor and pullup resisor R SofSar. The Sof SarComparaor compares he volage a pin SofS a he negaive inpu wih he rampsignal of he PWMOP a he posiive inpu. When he SofSar volage V Sof Sar is less han he Feedback volage V FB he Sof SarComparaor limis he pulse widh by reseing he driver. The SofSar also conrols he saring phase of he hiccup mode by he Comparaors C2 and C5 in case of overload or open loop. The SofSar volage is generaed by an exernal capacior C SofSar a pin SofS and he inernal pullup resisor R SofSar by charging he exernal capacior C SofSar. Curren Limiing There is a cycle by cycle curren limiing realised wih he CurrenLimiing Comparaor. The CoolMOS source curren is sensed via an exernal sense resisor R Sense. When he volage V Sense a R Sense exceeds he inernal hreshold volage V csh he CurrenLimi Comparaor immediaely urns off he gae drive. Propagaion Delay Compensaion Concerning circui delay here is an overshoo of he peak curren I pk which depends on he raio of di/d of he peak curren. A propagaion delay compensaion is inegraed o bound he olerance of he curren limiing a +/5% plus he olerances of R Sense. This means he propagaion delay ime beween exceeding he curren sense hreshold V csh and CoolMOS swich off is compensaed wihin a range of di 0 d 0.5 A / µ s E.g. I pk =0.5A a f swich =100kHz. Wihou propagaion delay compensaion he curren sense hreshold is se o V csh =1V. A curren ramp of di/d=0.4a/us and a propagaion delay ime of cshdelay =180ns leads o an I pk overshoo of 12%. Wih he propagaion delay compensaion he overshoo is only abou 2%. A curren ramp of di/d=0.1a/us leads o an overshoo of 3% in boh cases, wih and wihou compensaion. For furher informaion see Figure 4 on page 8. Oscillaor The oscillaor generaes a frequency f swich = 100kHz. A resisor, a capacior and a curren source which deermine he frequency are inegraed. The charging and discharging curren of he implemened oscillaor capacior are inernally rimmed, in order o achieve a very high accuracy swiching frequency. The raio of conrolled charge o discharge curren is adjused o reach a maximum PWM duy cycle D max =0.72. PWMLach The oscillaor clock oupu applies a se pulse o he PWMLach when iniiaing he CoolMOS conducion. Afer seing he PWMLach can be rese by he PWMOP, he SofSarComparaor, he CurrenLimiComparaor or he ErrorLach of he Proecion Uni. In case of reseing he driver is shu down direcly. Driver The driversage drives he gae of he CoolMOS and is opimized o minimize EMI and o provide high circui efficiency. This is done by reducing he swich on slope when reaching he CoolMOS hreshold. Thus he leading swich on spike is minimized. When CoolMOS is swiched off, he falling shape of he driver is slowed down when reaching 2V o preven an overshoo below ground. Furhermore he driver circui is designed o eliminae cross conducion of he oupu sage. Version April 2000

12 Proecion Uni (Hiccup Mode) An overload and open loop proecion is inegraed wihin he Proecion Uni. These wo failure modes are lached by an ErrorLach. Addiional hermal shudown and undervolage proecion of V CC is lached by he ErrorLach. In case of hese failure modes he Error Lach is se afer a delay of 5us and CoolMOS is shu down. This delay prevens he ErrorLach from spikes during normal operaion mode. Overload & Open loop wih normal load The deecion of open loop or overload is provided by he Comparaor C3, C5 and he ANDgae G2. The deecion is acivaed by C5 when he volage a pin SofS exceeds 5.3V. Henceforh he comparaor C3 can se he ErrorLach in case of open loop or overload which leads he feedback volage V FB o exceed he hreshold of 4.8V. Afer laching VCC decreases ill 9V. A his ime he exernal SofSar capacior is discharged by he inernal ransisor T1 due o Power Down Rese. When he IC is inacive VCC increases ill 14V. Now he ErrorLach is rese by Power Up Rese and he exernal SofSar capacior C SofSar is charged by he inernal pullup resisor R SofSar. During he SofSar phase which ends when he volage a pin SofS exceeds 6V he deecion of overload and open loop by C3 and G2 is inacive. In his way he sar up phase is no deeced as an overload. Bu afer he SofSar phase he sar up phase mus be finished o force he volage a FB under he failure deecion hreshold of 4.8V. Figure 6 shows he hiccup mode in case of overload or open loop wih normal load. Open loop wih no load An addiional proecion by he comparaors C1, C2 and he ANDgae G1 is implemened. In case of open loop and no load condiion he burs phase during hiccup mode is finished early. In his siuaion he converer oupu volage increases and also V CC. Figure 7 shows he hiccup mode for open loop and no load condiion. Undervolage Proecion There is an undervolage proecion of V CC realised by he Comparaor C4. In case V CC falls below 10V he Comparaor C4 immediaely urns off he gae drive by means of he ErrorLach. This is o provide only defined swiching of he CoolMOS. Thermal shudown Thermal shudown is lached by he ErrorLach when juncion emperaure of he pwm conroller is exceeding an inernal hreshold of 140 C. Version April 2000
