GENERAL INFORMATION The GPI Wireless Receiver is part of the Wireless system that includes both the Transmitter and Receiver. The GPI Wireless system works with the GPI G2 Series Turbine Meters with Display. This receiver comes with 25 ft. of cable. See Illustrated Parts list for additional lengths of cable available from GPI. Operation is subject to the following conditions: (1) this device may not cause interference; and (2) this device must accept any interference, including interference that may cause undesired operation of the device. CAUTION: This Module is not FM Approved. Therefore, use of this module with an approved metering system, voids FM Approval. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS When measuring flammable liquids, observe precautions against fire or explosion. When working in hazardous environments, always exercise appropriate safety precautions. When applying external power to the receiver, use DC power only. Disconnect external power to the receiver before detaching or attaching input or output wires. Be sure O-rings and seals are kept in good repair. INSTALLATION C A U T I O N Installation should be performed only by qualified personnel, and in accordance with local governing regulations. 2

DC motors, internal combustion engines, frequency inverters or RF emitting devices This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a class B digital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver. Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/tv technician for help. In order to maintain compliance with FCC regulations, shielded cables must be used with this equipment. Operation with non-approved equipment or unshielded cables is likely to result in interference to radio and TV reception. The user is cautioned that changes and modifications made to the equipment without the approval of manufacturer could void the user s authority to operate this equipment. Receiver Orientation Successful operation is dependent on careful placement of the transmitter and receiver. Plan ahead by temporarily placing the receiver and transmitter in the location desired. Complete the final installation after verifying the signal transmits and is received from this location. Receiver Orientation Figure 1 Red and green dots on the equipment provide a visual guide to help position the transmitter and receiver. The installer should be able to see as many green dots as possible once the equipment is in place. Green dots indicate the best path for reception from the transmitter to the receiver. Refer to Figure 2 for the radiation pattern and the Dead Spots in the Receiver. 3

Select a channel not currently in use. The Receiver s channel will need to match the channel for the transmitter. Up to eight channels are available. Set the channel according to the table below. See Figure 3 Setting DIP Switches Use the DIP switches to select the channel desired. Three DIP switches are provided. Use switches 1, 2 and 3 to select the channel. Installing the Receiver The receiver can be mounted on a wall or pipe and comes with 25 feet of cable. See Illustrated Parts list for additional lengths of cable available from GPI. Do not ignore a vertical overhead installation. Installing the receiver overhead can prove beneficial in many applications and provides excellent results. Distance between the receiver and display can even extend up to several hundred feet. The receiver must be externally powered not battery powered. The receiver is designed to operate continuously. 5 source is a DC voltage that can be anywhere in the 5-30 volt range. Only about ma of current is required. The supply voltage does not need to be regulated but should be at least minimally filtered. Note that during testing or in an emergency, a standard 9V transistor battery can power the receiver. No harm will be done to the equipment. This is not recommended for normal operation because battery life will be reduced. A fresh alkaline 9V battery will operate the receiver for about 24 hours. The receiver may be switched off at any time, and will correctly re-synchronize itself to the transmitted signal when power is restored. Signal-Output Type The receiver s signal output is driven by an open-collector device (this is sometimes called a current-sinking output). A pull-up resistor must be provided (1,000 Ohm suggested), and is usually connected to the positive DC bus of the driven device. The output driver can switch up to 60 volts, at up to 200 ma continuous current. Receiver Connections All connections to the receiver are made via its three-circuit terminal block. Printing on the PC board identifies the terminals as COM (nearest the radio-receiver module), SIG- NAL (center), and V+ (nearest the edge of the board). The COM terminal will need two wires both the negative ( ) side of the power supply, and the COM side of the open-collector output circuit must be connected here. The other two terminals each take only a single wire: the SIGNAL terminal is the high (+) side of the open-collector signal output, and the V+ terminal is the high (+) side of the DC power supply. NOTE: If a pull-up resistor cannot be supplied by the driven electronics, it is sometimes permissible to connect a resistor (we suggest 1,000 Ohms) between the SIG- NAL and V+ terminals. Use a resistor with caution; this will cause the outgoing signal amplitude to be equal to the receiver supply voltage. This might overload, and possibly damage, the external electronic input. Loss of Signal If the signal from the transmitter is lost for any reason, the receiver will force its output signal frequency to zero after about 1 minute. When the transmitter signal is again recognized, the receiver will correctly resynchronize itself to the incoming signal. Received-Signal Indicator In the event that a frequency-display device is not connected to the receiver output (or is not visible), it is possible to determine whether or not the receiver is recognizing the GPI transmitted signal. There is a small red indicator light (L.E.D.) on the receiver PC board, that will blink briefly each time a GPI transmission is received. Remove the coverplate of the receiver enclosure to see this. No further disassembly is needed. Operating Range The system has a maximum working range of about 300 feet under ideal conditions. Ideal conditions include: Line of sight No obstructions Fresh transmitter batteries No other wireless devices in the area Working range for more typical conditions is about 150 to 200 feet. Typical conditions include: Installed across open factory floor Partial obstruction from shelves or equipment The working range will be further reduced by steel walls, metallic siding and heavy steel beams. Expect a working range of 75 to 150 feet in these conditions. Other wireless transmitters operating in the same frequency range in the immediate vicinity can reduce the working range even more. See radiation pattern diagram for placement to achieve the best maximum range. 5

6 Due to the delayed-burst transmission method, we recommend that you use the receiver output signal for RATE indication only, and that you do not try to TOTALIZE the number of received pulses. The exception is if the monitored flowrate is constant, and remains constant for a long period of time. TOTALIZING the receiver output under these conditions may produce satisfactory results. Conversion Accuracy Like most digital systems, the GPI wireless system will produce an all-or-nothing output. That is, the output signal will either match the input nearly perfectly (within resolution limits), or it will be entirely absent. It is possible, under marginal reception conditions, for some transmitter updates to be missed, in which case the receiver will simply maintain the output frequency that was last received. NOTE: In the event that the signal is lost for more than about 1 minute, the receiver frequency output will be forced to zero. Waveform While frequency accuracy is nearly perfect, the GPI wireless receiver will always produce an exact square wave (i.e., true 50% duty cycle) at its frequency output. This will be true even at extremely low frequencies, where the actual turbine pulse output may be more of a pulse waveform instead of a square wave. We do not guarantee that the exact waveshape of the signal applied to the transmitter will be reproduced. This is not a problem for any GPI equipment. System Standards The GPI wireless system does not adhere to any wireless network standards such as Bluetooth or Zigbee. Such standards are suitable to use in networks, where individual network members (perhaps dozens or maybe even hundreds) may come and go, and any or all may need to transmit data at the same time. Proprietary protocol systems such as ours, on the other hand, are far more suitable to relatively fixed applications where only one transmitter is active at any given time, and its signal is always received by a specific receiver. WIRING The wiring diagram above shows the internal wiring of the receiver. Wires are defined as follows: Black is the ground wire ( COM ) Red is the power( V+ ) White is the signal( SIGNAL ) Wiring to an output device from the receiver is dependent on the type of device used in your application. Refer to documentation for your output device for wiring from the receiver. Contact GPI Customer Service for assistance in choosing a GPI device from the receiver. MAINTENANCE This receiver is virtually maintenance free. Visual inspection of connections annually is advisable. Make sure the Coverplate O-Ring is not pinched or cracked anytime the coverplate is removed. 6

7 TROUBLESHOOTING A. NO SIGNAL. 1. L.E.D. is not blinking. (L.E.D. is located on circuit board inside the battery compartment.) Check that the receiver and transmitter are on the same channel. Check power and that all connections are secure. Verify the orientation of the transmitter and receiver. Inspect the line of site of the transmitter and receiver. Remove any obstructions or reposition the unit. B. SIGNAL IS RECEIVED, BUT NO OUTPUT SIGNAL. 1. No pull-up resistor. Install pull-up resistor. Check for broken or cracked wiring. Check all connections are secure. 7

12 Limited Warranty Policy Great Plains Industries, Inc E. 36 th Street North, Wichita, KS USA , hereby provides a limited warranty against defects in material and workmanship on all products manufactured by Great Plains Industries, Inc. This product includes a 1 year warranty. Manufacturer s sole obligation under the foregoing warranties will be limited to either, at Manufacturer s option, replacing or repairing defective Goods (subject to limitations hereinafter provided) or refunding the purchase price for such Goods theretofore paid by the Buyer, and Buyer s exclusive remedy for breach of any such warranties will be enforcement of such obligations of Manufacturer. The warranty shall extend to the purchaser of this product and to any person to whom such product is transferred during the warranty period. The warranty period shall begin on the date of manufacture or on the date of purchase with an original sales receipt. This warranty shall not apply if: A. the product has been altered or modified outside the warrantor s duly appointed representative; B. the product has been subjected to neglect, misuse, abuse or damage or has been installed or operated other than in accordance with the manufacturer s operating instructions.
