3 A Guide To Range The range over which two portable radios can talk will largely depend upon the terrain or possibly obstacles in their path. Range is a very difficult thing to determine. For instance, talking between radios 20 miles apart from hilltop to hilltop is quite possible MILES 20 MILES Terrain is therefore the most important consideration in deciding how far apart radios will actually talk to each other. There are other factors that help to obtain maximum range. It is for instance important to keep the aerial in a vertical position, and the higher the radio is held the better the range. The shielding effect of the body on the radio waves is also pertinent, for example when using the headset or remote speaker/mic option, it is normal to wear the radio on a belt clip or in a pocket, whilst very convenient this arrangement does reduce the range fairly drastically due to the absorption effect of the body. To increase a system s range Maximon Solutions will often utilise Local or Talkthrough base stations, a site survey will enable us to design the correct system for your individual requirements.
