3 Introduction To NBEMS Narrow Band Emergency Messaging System (NBEMS), introduced in 2008, is an Open Source software suite that allows amateur radio operators to reliably send and receive data using nearly any computer (Windows, Mac, and Linux) and any analog radio without requiring a dedicated digital infrastructure or specialized modem hardware. NBEMS works on both VHF/UHF FM and on HF.

Narrow Band Emergency Messaging System Consists of three programs: Fldigi Fast Light Digital modem application Flmsg ICS forms, Radiogram, text, CSV Flwrap embed a checksum in a file Can download from Runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac. Released under GNU General Public License, so it s completely FREE.

5 NBEMS Philosophy Keep it cheap. Keep it simple. Use Open Source software. Don't depend upon infrastructure. Make it fun to use between drills and disasters. Any computer, any radio.

6 Interfacing With The Computer Many ways to interface with a computer. Rigblaster SignaLink But, if necessary, hold radio mike up to computer speaker and... Hold radio speaker up to computer mike! In an emergency, you don't really need a hardwired interface.

8 Where Can I Get The Software? Download the three components of NBEMS (fldigi , flmsg and flwrap 1.3.4) here: These programs are free, and there are versions for Windows, Macs and Unix platforms. 9 Setup and Configuration FLDIGI You will see the Configuration Wizard when you do a clean install of FLDIGI

10 Setup and Configuration FLDIGI Fill in the personal information that you want seen

11 Setup and Configuration FLDIGI Select the sound card to be used, usually the Default sound card. If an external sound card is used (i.e. SignaLink or Rigblaster) select that from the drop down menu.
