5 Small satellite deployment mission (J-SSOD) In recent years, a growing number of universities and companies around the world have been developing the Micro/Nano-satellite (under 100kg, mainly CubeSat). Historical Micro/Nano-satellite Launched Main Satellite Piggy-back Payload JAXA At the beginning of the Micro/Nano-satellite history, The method for transporting these satellite into orbit was a piggy-back payload by launch vehicles. the opportunity was limited because of the main satellite launch schedule. In 2012, October 4 JAXA successfully deployed the first satellites from Kibo: It has opened up new capabilities for ISS/Kibo utilization and new possibilities of the Micro/Nano-satellite. 5

9 Small Satellite Deployment Mission from Kibo/ISS Launch Opportunities for Micro/Nano-satellite As of July 2017, 198 satellites have been successfully deployed from Kibo. JAXA operates the innovative launch opportunity by using one and only function on Kibo/ISS From JAXA Tsukuba Space Center (TKSC) in JAPAN J-SSOD#2 NRCSD#1 Cyclops#1 J-SSOD Microsat#1 J-SSOD#1 Flight Control Team and Engineering Team J-SSOD Upgrade#1 9

10 Small Satellite Deployment platform using J-SSOD Lower vibration environment are provided since Small Satellites are stowed in a soft bag and carried to the ISS together with other cargo. Use the Airlock and Robotic Arm of Kibo without Extra-Vehicular Activity of astronauts. As of July 2017, 198 satellites have been deployed from Kibo by the Deployers developed by Japan or the US. Kibo is the sole facility of ISS for conducting this mission. 13 Small Satellite Deployment platform using J-SSOD KiboCUBE Collaboration between UNOOSA and JAXA to offer small satellite deployment opportunities from Kibo in order to facilitate improved space technologies in developing countries. (CubeSat (1U)/ once a year from ) Credit : JAXA UNOOSA and JAXA have completed public announcement of this opportunity and accepted 13 proposals in March, UNOOSA and JAXA have selected a team from the University of Nairobi to be the first to benefit from the KiboCUBE programme. We are going to launch a 1st Kenyan University NanoSatellite called 1KUNS-PF(1st Kenyan University NanoSatellite-Precursor Flight) in FY2017. Its mission is Technology Demonstration. As for 2 nd round opportunity, UNOOSA/JAXA have accepted some proposals. One entity will be selected and notified by the end of August The 3 rd round is coming soon! Announcing the first round of the KiboCUBE program at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in September Coordination with students of Nairobi university 13

( Investigator: Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) Japan, Ghana, Mongolia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Size: 1U, 5 satellites Birds 2: to be launched in 2018 (Malaysia, Philippines, Bhutan) Credit : JAXA Joint Global Multi Nation Birds (Birds Satellite Project) Program Objectives I. Teach engineering graduate students (from overseas and Japan) the entire process for putting a satellite into space such as design, testing and operation. II. Lay down the foundation for a sustainable space program in non-space-faring countries by building-up human capital in universities III. Most importantly, using the same students, create an international human network that can assist members to develop their infant space programs through cooperation and by sharing information and experiences. 14
