Integrated Multi-Sensor Testing of EW/Radar Platforms Dr. Bob Andrews
Summary and Overview o Legacy defensive aids and their testability o Modern DASS sensor fusion o Requirement for multi-sensor, multispectral testing o How testing is achieved o What is the future? o Summary and Conclusions
Multi - Spectral Coverage Radar and Radar CM Comms and Comms CM UV and UV CM IR and IR CM
Legacy Defensive Aids Systems X RWR X MAW Radar ECM Chaff Flares Stand alone systems Separate displays and processing Only processed data available to other systems
Legacy System Testing RF Stim RWR UV/IR Stim Target Gen ECM Chaff MAW Radar Flares/ DIRCM Individual test sets Uncorrelated sensor stimuli Separate data analysis Considerable amount of testing carried out Laborious
DASS Sensor Fusion Modern Platforms Have Integrated DASS/Sensors = Sensor Fusion Typical Sensors/System Include Radar ESM/RWR LWR MAW Active ECM Chaff Flares
Modern Platform Sensors & Countermeasures Components Radar
Sensors & Countermeasures Components Up to 40 GHz 3-5 and 8-11 micron I/J-Band Sensors RWR MAW LWR Radar DASS COMPUTER A/C Systems Data Bus ECM Chaff Flares DIRCM Countermeasures DASS computer processes raw data from the sensors to make its decisions
Integrated Systems Primary Processing Functions Fuse sensor data to enhance target recognition effectiveness Correlate sensor data to enable high accuracy targeting Provide coordinated countermeasures to maximise platform survivability Sensor integrated testing is essential in order to verify these functions
Requirements for Multi-Sensor Testing Provide coherent stimuli to all sensors Provide stimuli at the same time Generate stimuli from a common scenario = tactical engagement modelling Repeatable test scenarios Multi-spectral ( DC to Light )
Integrated System Testing Requirements To/from data analysis systems RF Stim RWR IR Stim MAW Central Control Computer Common Scenario Generation Control of Stimulators Linked to Data Analysis Systems Laser Stim Target Gen LWR Radar
Common Scenario Generation Requirements Real-time execution 6 DOF modelling for platforms Accurate propagation models Terrain models and terrain obscuration Easy-to-programme Easy-to-edit Repeatable
Common Scenario Generator Radar threat simulator already provides the complex scenario modelling and is a good starting point Enhance the platform models and data bases to include radar, MAW, LWR, etc Expand interfaces to include control of additional sensors/sub-systems
Platform Dynamics Modelling Requirements X, Y, Z, roll, pitch, yaw movements 3-D platforms Platform targeting Inter-related platform movements Platforms with weapon systems (missile launch, etc) Platforms with chaff, flares, etc
Increase Platform Asset Capabilities Definition
Add Various Stimulator Control into Scenario Control UV and IR stimulators by adding threats into scenario data bases and interface controls Control radar target generator (RTG) using platforms as target returns
Integrated T & E Process Radar Threat Simulator provides the necessary scenario models, propagation models, dynamics, etc Within scenario, UV/IR and laser threats (stimulators) are added and controlled by the Radar Threat Simulator Platforms in the RTG become the targets to radars using radar target generator
RWR Testing Requirements Generate user required threats to very high fidelity 6 DOF platform movements Model DF interface (4 ports, 8 ports, etc AOA, Phase, DTOA, etc) 500 MHz to 40 GHz frequency coverage 100 s of emitters/platforms Trigger chaff deployment if required
Radar Testing Requirements Generate targets that match the RWR platforms 3D target returns JEM lines Rotor blade modulation Target RCS fluctuations Connect to radar at RF and generate targets in correct range, Az, El, bins
MAW Testing Requirements Generate realistic missile UV/IR signatures and profiles Multi-spectral stimulation (3-5 and 8-11 microns) Missile dynamics in simulation to correlate with radar tracks Trigger flare deployment if required
LWR Testing Requirements Generate laser-guided threats (beam riders, range finders, target generators) Multi-spectral in 1 micron spectrum area
Realisation of Integrated Test System Scenario generation Emitters Platforms IR Profiles IR signatures Laser Designator profiles Target RCS JEM Lines Chaff models THREAT STIMULATOR IR/UV STIMULATOR LASER STIMULATOR DRFM RADAR TARGET GENERATOR Control Control Control RWR MAW LWR RADAR
Connections to the Systems Under Test Direct inject/direct coupled Provides full 360 o Az and +/- 90 o El Fully stimulates sensors through their performance range Most expensive solution Radiated through the air One angle only- no DF information Less hardware than direct inject Flexible: multi-site usage Limited range
Anechoic Chamber Radiation Methodology
Some Australian Projects with Direct Inject Integrated Testing Air87 has integrated test system RF Stimulator IR Stimulator Laser Simulator Echidna has integrated test system RF Stimulator IR Stimulator
The Future for Integrated Testing Integrated test and evaluation systems will become essential in their usage as integrated DASS systems are deployed IFF, Comms, Navigation elements can be added and will be necessary These systems will be fully automated and will reduce test times considerably
The Future for Integrated Testing Many countries will encompass an indigenous & independent testing capability for preservation of critical data and knowledge Systems like JSF are around the corner and Integrated DASS testing is needed
Summary and Conclusions Integrated testing is essential in modern DASS systems By using a radar threat stimulator as the basic controller and scenario generator, integrated testing is already here now and in service Considerable time and $$ will be saved through the use of this type of multi-sensor, multi-spectral testing Deployed systems will be tested to a much more rigorous level through integrated testing and Customer 1 ( the user ) will have a higher performance and reliable DASS
