Technology Primer Introduction to Broadband Technologies March 2017 Page 19 of 37
Page 20 of 37 Technology Primer
Global Internet Growth Page 21 of 37 Canadian growth tracks global demand
Speed Descriptions Download Speed Types of Usage Page 22 of Mbps Single User Basic Service Web Browsing Music Streaming 6-10 Mbps Online Gaming (1-2 users) Mbps Basic Family 2-3 users High Def TV Streaming Mbps Multi-Use & More Typical Urban Speeds 50+ Mbps Urban Objectives 200 Mbps Symmetrical Project Objective File Sharing (small) Internet TV (1 user) Video Streaming (1-2 users 2-3 higher demand users Smart Home Applications (surveillance etc) Higher Upload Speeds (sending from your home) Future Proof ( 15 year window?????)
Technology Primer Service Technology Description Speeds Characteristics Mobile Wireless (Cell) Radio from tower to mobile device such as Cell Phone Generally 5-10/0.5 Mbps on LTE Up to 25 Mbps Very dependent on number of users on the local tower Fixed Wireless Radio from tower to fixed device (antenna/modem) Line of sight 1.5/0.2 to 25/5 Mbps depending on radio technology Dependent on # of users on tower Modem & tower radio locked to same frequency WiFi - Home Wireless router in your home services PCs, tablets & enabled devices Limited by speed of internet service Limited to 50 meter radius generally Unlicensed spectrum of 2.4 or 5 GHz Page 23 of 37 WiFi - Municipal Multiple Radios services PCs, tablets & enabled devices in Public spaces Determined by Municipal Strategy Uses same technology as Home Wifi but equipment engineered for public use
Technology Primer Service Technology Speeds Characteristics DSL - ADSL - VDSL Uses copper telephone wires 1.5/0.2 to 50/10 Mbps Speed varies based on distance to Equipment (either CO or remote) Fibre to the Home (FTTH) End to end fibre to house or business Up to 1 Gbps Fully scalable no loading issues Hybrid Fibre Coax Fibre to neighbourhood pedestal shared coax cable to house or businesses Up to 60/10 Mbps Possibly higher Speed will vary based on load/number of users on shared cable Satellite Radio from satellite to dish on house or business 300/100 kbps to? 25/10 Mbps - Speed varies based on number of users on satellite - Currently over capacity Page 24 of 37

Fibre to the Home GPON Internet CO GPON Dedicated lines Easily scalable to meet load Page 29 of 37 Can offer 1 Gbps speeds
Coax distribution not a symmetric service, but typically 60/10 available Page 30 of 37 Shared amongst the subdivision, can be split into smaller groups
Wi-Fi Internet Service from a Provider Internet Modem Wireless Router or Access Point Page 31 of 37 Modem and router are often combined in residential deployments Ceiling mounted
How Wi-Fi works A good analogy is a cordless phones. Telephone Internet Company Page 32 of 37 A gateway to the Telephone System Internet. Its allows free two-way communication Communication type: One to one device Many devices. Connectivity depends on distance from Phone base. Access Point (Wi-Fi base).
Evolution from Cordless Phones More than one radio/antenna. Allows different types of communication: Voice call. Videoconference. Browsing. 5 Ghz 2.4 Ghz Internet Page 33 of 37 Access Point (AP)
Wi-Fi gear and devices Access Points Indoor or outdoor Wi-Fi Devices Security/Traffic Cameras Outdoor AP 5 Ghz Weather Stations 2.4 Ghz Any Type of Sensors Page 34 of 37 Internet Indoor AP More APs & Devices = Increase Internet connection Residents & Visitors
Wi-Fi Radios Wi-Fi APs can have radios in 2.4 and/or 5 Ghz bands. A radio has an associated name. Pipes are a good analogy for Wi-Fi radios. A 2.4 pipe carries less water flow capacity than a 5 pipe. Wi-Fi APs could work simultaneous in both bands. 2.4 Ghz radios could serve 15-25* concurrent devices. 5 Ghz radios could serve 40-70* concurrent devices. * Reference only, configuration depended. 2/3 of certified devices work in both bands. (Source: Wi-Fi Alliance) 2.4 Ghz band is crowded, so More radio interference with: Microwaves Old Cordless Phones. Less Water Flow Capacity = Lower download speed. 5 Ghz 2.4 Ghz Access Point (AP) Page 35 of 37 Trend is to use 5Ghz band that allows higher speeds.
Wi-Fi What is? is a family standards maintained by IEEE (Institute of Electrical, and Electronics Engineers). In simple terms standard defines: Band(s) of operation. Speed. Range. Page 36 of n & ac are currently used in Public Wi-Fi deployments ac is preferable but more expensive to deploy.
