1 XP4 Microwave Link Upgrade Program Introduction This white paper outlines Harris Stratex Networks proposal for upgrading links to Eclipse. XP4 legacy microwave Operators are being challenged to introduce new data services rapidly. Typically, existing backhaul networks are not able to support the required throughput, and in many cases will not be Ethernet ready. All microwave transmission providers have a major focus on the need to alleviate transport bottle necks as well as prepare for Ethernet traffic by upgrading the backhaul network. A low-risk and cost-effective solution is needed to provide higher capacity throughput while utilizing previously allocated frequency licenses, existing radio paths, and where possible, making maximum use of existing infrastructure. The Harris Stratex Networks XP4 link upgrade program is the solution for networks with XP4 legacy links. Implementing the upgrade provides significant benefit to operators through improved ROI and reduced incremental CapEx, compared to complete link replacement with a non-harris Stratex Networks solution. Its benefits include: Reduced CapEx via maximum re-use of existing link installation and hardware Improved return on OpEx by providing increased capacity throughput for existing frequency spectrum license fees Low-risk migration path from TDM to all Ethernet providing protection for incremental CapEx investment. Reduced OpEx through continuity of NMS software tools The XP4 product has now entered the End of Life product life cycle. This product is supported via repair and return; however, limited spares are available for purchase. Antenna Adaptors Harris Stratex Networks has introduced a series of antenna adaptors that enable new Eclipse ODU hardware to be interfaced onto existing antennas. This reduces the services and hardware costs involved with upgrading or replacing existing microwave radio links, because users will not need to replace or re-align antennas when upgrading legacy XP4 links to Eclipse. Direct-mount antenna adaptors available for XP4 enable the Eclipse ODU to connect directly to the antenna for non-protected terminal applications. The direct-mount adaptor will also provide the IEC standard interface to flexible waveguide for use in conjunction with a remote interface kit, when remote mounting XP4 as required for MHSB protected terminal installations. All antenna adaptors are provided with a replacement o-ring seal for the waveguide interface at the antenna feed port. Antenna vendors advice indicates that this is the primary maintenance element to ensure reliable antenna life to 20 years. Headquarters Harris Stratex Networks, Inc. 2 XP4 Link Upgrade Proposal The Business Benefits of Upgrading Using the appropriate antenna adaptor, the existing antenna is re-used, along with the IF cable installation and related grounding hardware. Figure 2 below illustrates the equipment re-use for a standard non-protected installation. Reuse Represents >19% savings * Figure 2: Non protected site equipment re-use using antenna adaptor * Note: 17% is a conservative savings estimate based on Eclipse list pricing for antennas and accessory items, and services pricing. Actual savings will typically be greater depending on local factors such as services pricing. Reduced Expenditure The Link Replacement Program enables maximum reuse of your existing link installation and deployed hardware. Reuse of all antennas Reuse of IF cabling from indoor unit to top of tower Reuse of grounding equipment Reuse of existing frequency spectrum licenses The deployed equipment is IP-ready Reduced Services Costs The reuse of components of the existing link results in significant services cost reductions when compared to the costs of a new link installation: No antenna installation costs No cabling installation costs No link alignment costs Seamless EMS/NMS integration with existing systems 10/29/2007 XP4 Link Replacement V5-8.5x11.doc Page 2 of 16

3 In addition, a faster overall swap-out time is achieved, ensuring that the link downtime is minimized compared to introducing a completely new set of equipment. The Technical Benefits of Upgrading XP4 upgrade options are available to fulfill network needs in terms of technology, additional capacity, and additional system gain. Increased Utilizing the capacity upgrade with same or better system gain option provides numerous benefits, including: Reuse of existing frequency channel bandwidth assignment No RF link redesign or costs Improved System Gain Within the frequency channel utilized by existing links, various upgrade options are available, depending on the available link budget. In most cases, a higher throughput upgrade is available for the same or better system gain, in the same bandwidth channel. If improved system gain is a primary goal, this can also be achieved in all cases. The chart below depicts the upgrade options for 13 GHz XP4 where utilizing an existing 7 MHz frequency channel. A number of capacity upgrade options are available with better or similar system gain compared to the existing XP4 or link. For a complete set of upgrade charts (7-38 GHz) refer to Appendix 1. 13GHz XP4 Upgrade Options 7MHz Channel l System Gain, db Typica 120 XP4 Upgrades with same or better gain XP4 Up gra des with same or less gain Hi 4E1 7MHz 5E1 7MHz 8E1 7MHz 10E1 7MHz 16E1 7MHz Figure 3: XP4 to Eclipse upgrade options for 13 GHz 7 MHz channel Move to an Ethernet Backhaul Network with Confidence Eclipse offers unique wireless Carrier grade Ethernet capabilities and is the first and only Carrier Ethernet solution for wireless transmission networks to meet the stringent MEF requirements, MEF 9 and MEF /29/2007 XP4 Link Replacement V5-8.5x11.doc Page 3 of 16

4 Whether opting for terminal or nodal based network architecture, Eclipse provides native Ethernet capabilities in conjunction with native TDM, providing a safe transition from TDM to Ethernet as necessary. The primary options include: Upgrade to Terminal solution, Super-PDH, and native Ethernet capable Upgrade to Nodal solution, Super-PDH, and native Ethernet capable To adequately address the anticipated capacity needs for future HSDPA overlays, both terminal and nodal options include future support for adaptive modulation. Eclipse Solution Options The XP4 link upgrade proposition is not limited to any particular Eclipse hardware configuration. Harris Stratex Networks anticipates the following two options will be appropriate for the majority of applications: Option 1 IDU GE 20x (adds Gigabit Ethernet interfaces to every site) In this option the legacy link IDU is replaced with the Eclipse IDU GE 20x. This IDU has numerous benefits, including capacity saleability from 4 to 360 Mbps, native TDM and Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, MHSB and hitless space diversity support, as well as interoperability with Eclipse nodes over the air. ODU options include or, depending on the extent of the required capacity upgrade. Both the ODU options will support a later upgrade to Adaptive Modulation support. For additional information on this solution please contact your sales representative. Cost Effective Solution for Native Layer 2 Ethernet + TDM Option 2 INU with RAC 30 Figure 4: Eclipse IDU GE 20x non-protected terminal This option positions an Eclipse Intelligent Node Unit (INU) at each site, enabling the full scope of benefits of the Eclipse nodal platform. The Eclipse node solution enables highspeed ring functionality, multiple radio path support, and traffic aggregation and routing in a single compact unit. This option is most appropriate for aggregating sites, and for sites that are anticipated to experience significant future growth. 10/29/2007 XP4 Link Replacement V5-8.5x11.doc Page 4 of 16

5 ODU options include or depending on the extent of the required capacity upgrade. Both the ODU options will support a later upgrade to Adaptive Modulation support. For additional information on this solution please contact your sales representative.
