Recognize basic operation and application of various power semiconductor devices. Acquire basic understanding of various power converter modules used to build power electronics system. Analyze and design of rectifier circuit, inverter circuit, AC voltage controller circuit and cycloconverter. Acquire the ability to select and design suitable power converter modules/system in order to meet requirements of industrial applications. Develop hands-on experience in designing, testing, and debugging power electronics circuits. Power MOSFET: Structure, static V-I characteristics, Ratings, Maximum allowable ratings, safe operating area, applications. GTO: Structure, Equivalent Circuit, V-I characteristics, Ratings, Maximum allowable ratings, applications. IGBT: Structure, static V-I characteristics, ratings, Maximum allowable ratings, Latch up, safe operating area, applications. Thyristor Introduction, Static V-I characteristics, Two Transistor model, Turn-on methods, Snubber circuit design, Thyristor types, Series and parallel operation of thyristors, Thyristor firing circuits(r and R-C triggering circuit), DIAC and Hours Allotted

AC to DC converters Single Phase controlled and uncontrolled Converters with R, RL and RLE load, Line Commutated Inverters, Three Phase uncontrolled and controlled converters, Effect of Source Inductance in Single Phase and Three Phase converters, Semi Converters, Performance Parameters of Single Phase Rectifiers, cosine firing angle control. 10 Total Section II DC to AC converters Voltage source inverters: Single Phase Half Bridge and Full Bridge Inverters, Three Phase Inverter: 180 degree and 120 degree conduction and their comparison. PWM Techniques: Square wave PWM, Sinusoidal PWM, modified PWM, multi PWM, Unipolar and Bipolar Switching Scheme. Current Source Inverters, Applications of voltage source and current source inverters. AC voltage controller Introduction, Principle of ON-OFF and phase control, Single-Phase bidirectional controllers with resistive and inductive loads, Three Phase full wave controllers, Cycloconverter, Single Phase Cycloconverter, Three Phase Cycloconverter. DC to DC converters: Introduction, Step-down Chopper, Step-up Chopper, classification of chopper: Type A, B, C, D and E, DC switched mode regulator: buck regulator, boost regulator and buck-boost regulator. 10 Instructional Method and Pedagogy Total 24 Lectures will be conducted with the aid of multi-media projector, black board, OHP etc. Assignments based on course content will be given to the students at the end of each unit/topic and will be evaluated at regular interval. Surprise tests/quizzes/seminar/tutorials will be conducted. The course includes a laboratory, where students have an opportunity to build an appreciation for the concepts being taught in lectures. Minimum ten experiments shall be there in the laboratory related to course contents.
