7 Thin Film Thin Film Technology Corp Current Sense Resistors TFT s number one product is it s uniquely designed Current Sense Resistor (CSR). Using new and innovative technology for accuracy and precision, it is what every application needs. TFT s research and industry leading experience has led to the development of the most accurate current sense resistor. Using thoughtful engineering and understanding of the relation between materials, temperature, and current flow, TFT has been able to create a product with ability to hold an accurately known R-Value through the PCB reflow process and life of the component. TFT s parts are inherently sulfur resistant, as silver is not used in the construction and all materials are non-reactive with sulfur. The product is cost effective through automated and high-volume production, which provides unmatched cutting-edge trim processes. How do Current Sense Resistors work? Current Sense Resistors work by providing a highly accurate known ultra-low ohm resistance to pass current through while providing isolated terminals to effectively and accurately measure the voltage drop. Ohm s law states that the voltage across a resistor is proportional to the current, holding resistance constant. This allows the voltage to be measured by the current where I=V/R. Resulting errors come from the unknown or inaccurate R-Value or the change in the voltage drop not being accurately measured. TFT solves both of these problems by producing a very accurate current sensing device through use of high quality trim, low TCR material, and independent voltage sensing terminals. TFT offers both 2-terminal current sense resistors and 4-terminal kelvin sense resistors. TFT s 4-terminal is industry leading in accuracy and stability after mounting the PCB compared to the competition. TFT s 2-terminal CSR is an economical choice with a large array of options, offering anything from the small size of 0201, tolerances down to 0.5%, and up to 5 watts of power. TFT s 4-terminal Kelvins sense resistors offer higher precision and board mounted accuracy. TFT uses isolated terminals to give a true 4-terminal part, unlike many competitors. Isolating the terminals on a 4-terminal current sense resistors reduces parasitic resistance between the source and sense terminal that impacts overall resistor performance. TFT s 4-wire connection point occurs within the component and uses the same point the when the product is trimmed to value during the manufacturing process; unlike our competitors whose connection points occur where the trace lines meet the land pattern, eliminating circuit board electrode pads and wraparound electrodes to create parasitic resistance and induce error. In addition, our design also reduced the likelihood that solder fills the area between the source and sense terminals preventing inconsistencies. These issues become more prevalent when using very low resistance CSR, as PCB reflow of the resistive material can cause a shift in material grain structure in the reflow process, which typically reaches 260 C. When the resistance is low (down to.5mω), a slight shift in resistance can cause large R-Value errors. Typical CSR designs supports an 8% board mounted sensing accuracy that allows for parts to be outside of initial specifications. However, with improved design, TFT boasts and accuracy of less than 1% board mounted sensing accuracy. The problem herein lies in the reaction between silver and sulfur. This reaction creates silver sulfide growths, also known as silver flowers, which resemble tin whiskers and are a sign of an underlying sulfurization problem. As the silver terminal base of the chip resistor reacts with the atmospheric sulfur, it begins to etch away at the terminal resulting in the resistor value to shift and eventually failing to open. Silver is used in general purpose resistor because it can form a very effective terminal base while remaining relatively inexpensive. TFT prevents against sulfurization in two ways: In series such as the AS and other Thin Film anti-sulfur series, gold or copper terminals are used instead of silver which effectively negates these effects. In series such as the TFA and TFAS as well as other anti-sulfur Thick Film Resistors, a proprietary double coating of NiCr is deposited over the Silver terminal to protect it from atmospheric sulfur, see figures below. These methods comply with ASTM-809B and have passed the testing to 105 C for 1000 hours with the atmospheric concentration of sulfur at 1000 ppm. This makes these resistors the ideal choice for Automotive, Server, Computing, Industrial, Outdoor, and Volcanic Region electronic devices. Figure 1.
