1 SECTION WIRELESS CLOCK/TONE GENERATOR SYSTEM PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: Satellite based, synchronized wireless clock/tone generator system, including clocks, tone generator, transmitter, receiver, software, and related accessories. B. Related Sections: Intercom and Clock/Bell Raceway System Intercom and Clock/Bell Raceway System for PLCs Intercom and Clock/Bell Systems. 4. Division 7 - Thermal and Moisture Protection. 5. Division 16 - Electrical SYSTEM DESCRIPTION A. Wireless Clocks: 1. Clock system shall continually synchronize clocks to each other throughout the facility and shall be capable of clock readouts in multiple time zones where desired. 2. The system shall utilize GPS technology to provide "atomic" time. 3. The system shall not require hard wiring. 4. Clocks shall automatically adjust for Daylight Saving Time. 5. Clocks shall be synchronized to within 10 milliseconds 6 times per day, and the system shall have an internal oscillator to maintain + 1 second per day between synchronizations. Clock accuracy shall not exceed seconds. 6. The system shall include an internal clock so failure of the GPS signal shall not cause the clocks to fail in indicating time. 7. The system shall incorporate fail-safe design so failure of any component shall not cause failure of the system. a. Upon restoration of power or repair of failed Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES

2 component, the system shall resume normal operation without the need to reset the system or any system component. 8. Clock locations shall be as indicated, and clocks shall be fully portable, capable of being relocated at any time. B. Wireless Tone (WT) Generator: 1. The WT generator system shall provide a tone at predefined times from the clock system to the intercom system. The tone shall actuate all devices programmed to operate on receipt of the tone. 2. Timing and operation of the WT generator system shall be controlled by software provided by system manufacturer, housed in the transmitter and programmed by a Board furnished PC or laptop computer. 3. The system shall not require wiring from the transmitter to WT generator. 4. Initially and at scheduled intervals, the WT generator shall receive time data and command packet from the transmitter to send an audio tone to the intercom system. 5. The transmitter shall continuously broadcast (transmit) a time data packet and command packets to the WT generator. The transmitter shall operate on regulated FCC licensed frequencies to minimize interference on the selected channel. 6. The GPS unit shall receive the precise time via satellite from its vantage point with a "view of the sky" and continuously provide this precise time to the transmitter. 7. The system shall incorporate fail-safe design so failure of any component shall not cause failure of the system. Upon restoration of power or repair of failed component, the system shall resume normal operation without the need to reset the system or system component REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS A. Equipment and components furnished shall be of manufacturers latest model. B. Transmitter and receiver shall comply with Part 15 and Part 90 of FCC rules, as follows: Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES

3 1. The equipment shall not cause harmful interference. 2. Transmitter frequency shall be governed by FCC Part Transmitter output power shall be governed by FCC Part (b). C. System shall be installed in compliance with local and state authorities having jurisdiction SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: 1. Complete catalog data for each component, describing physical characteristics and method of installation. 2. Brochure or color card showing available colors and finishes of clocks. 3. Complete installation, set-up and maintenance instructions. 4. Software programming instructions, coordinated with the Board s requirements for timing and sequencing of the equipment. B. Operating License: 1. Submit evidence of application for operating license before installing equipment. 2. Furnish the license, or if the license has not been received, a copy of the application for the license, to the Board before operating the equipment. 3. When license is received, deliver original license to the Board. C. Samples: 1. One switch for approval. 2. One clock for approval. 3. Approved samples shall be tagged and shall be installed in the work at location directed. D. Manufacturer's and Installer's Qualifications: Evidence of qualifications of manufacturer and installer, as specified QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Systems requiring wiring and/or conduit between master and clocks, or which require connection of clocks to external electrical power supply, are not acceptable. E. Principal components of the system shall be the product of a single manufacturer DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Deliver components to the site in the manufacturer's original packaging. Packaging shall contain manufacturer's name and address, product identification number, and other related information. B. Store equipment in unopened containers until ready for installation. Store in building in finished, airconditioned space PROJECT SITE CONDITIONS A. Coordinate installation of GPS receiver with Division 7 - Thermal and Moisture Protection to provide a watertight bracket and related fastener installation. B. Verify the PC or laptop having the specified minimum system requirements will be available for use in programming the WT generator. C. Clocks shall not be installed until painting and other finish work in each room is complete. Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES

5 1.08 SYSTEM STARTUP A. At completion of installation and before final acceptance, start up the equipment to assure equipment is operating properly, units connected to the system are receiving tones as programmed, and clocks are operating properly. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 MANUFACTURERS A. Wireless Clock/Tone Generator System: 1. Primex Wireless, Lake Geneva, WI. 2. Accepted Equivalent EQUIPMENT: A. Transmitter: 1. Primex Wireless Model FM-72, consisting of wireless transmitter with GPS receiver. a. Unit shall obtain current "atomic" time from satellite. b. The system shall transmit time and control packets continuously to one or more WT generators in the system. 2. Transmission: a. Frequency Range: One watt at frequency of to MHZ. b. Transmitter output power: +30 dbm (one watt). c. Frequency deviation + 4 khz. d. Transmission Range: One mile, open field. e. Radio technology: Narrowband FM. f. Number of channels: 16. g. Channel bandwidth: 20 khz maximum. h. Transition mode: one-way communication. i. Data rate: 2 KBps. j. Operating range: 0 degrees C. to 70 degrees C. k. Transmitter power requirements: 120 VAC 60 Hz. l. Internal power requirements: 5 volts DC. m. Carrier frequency stability + 20 ppm. Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES

6 3. Transmitter shall have 16 selectable channels to assure interference-free reception. 4. Transmitter shall have the following switches: a. Time zone adjust switches for all time zones. b. Daylight Saving Time bypass switch. c. 12-hour or 24-hour display. 5. Transmitter Housing: Metal case, 16-3/4" by 12" by 1-7/8" in size. 6. Transmitter shall include a display for: a. Time readout. b. AM and PM indicator if 12 hour time display is set. c. Day and date readout. d. Indicator for Daylight Saving or Standard Time. e. LED which shall flash red in event of reception problem. f. GPS reception indicator. 7. Transmitter shall contain an internal clock to prevent disabling the operation of the WT generator during loss of reception from the GPS. B. GPS/Transmitter Cable: A specially designed low resistance data cable can be used to extend the distance between the transmitter and the GPS unit. C. Antenna: inches high, commercial type, mounted on top center of transmitter housing. Antenna gain shall be greater than -110 dbm. 2. Antenna polarization shall be data logic, zero to 5 volts. D. Power Supply: 1. Model Number: Q Input: 120 volt AC 50/60 Hz, 0.4 amp. 3. Output: 9 volt DC, 1.5 amp. E. GPS Receiver: 1. Primex: Model Number Q 11695, GPS roof mounted, with 15 feet cable attached. 2. Receiver shall be a complete GPS receiver including an Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES

7 antenna in an enclosed weatherproof case, 3-7/8 inches by 4-3/16 inches by 2 inches, designed for roof or outdoor mounting. Provide mounting bracket for attachment to roof structure. F. Wireless Tone (WT) Generator: 1. Primex Model Number 14002, WT generator, complete with cables and antenna required for complete installation. 2. Size: Approximately 7-1/4 inches wide by 5 inches long by 1-1/2 inches high, not including antenna. 3. WT generator shall be housed in a plastic case volt switching power supply (fed from 120 volt line) 5. Switching contacts "Form D", two sets: one, normally open; one normally closed. 6. Switch ratings: a. Contact ratings: 1) 5 amp, 1/6 hp, 125v, 250v, AC. 2) 5 amp, 20 volts DC. b. DC Break ratings: 1) 30 watt maximum. 2) One amp, 30 volts, DC; 24 amp, 125 volts DC. 7. Audio Output: a. Isolation transformer with center tap, 600/150 ohms output impedance. b. Variable output and line level. 8. Relay output. 9. Test and reset buttons. 10. Signal indicator. 11. One hundred switch identification codes. Any number of switches for each identification code. 12. Selectable channels: programmable events with 7 day selectable operations. Expandable to 48 programmable events. 14. Selectable options for each event, as follows: a. None. b. Turn on and stay on. c. Turn off and stay off. d. Turn on for one second, then off for one second, Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES

8 repeat 5 times. e. Turn on for 3 seconds. f. Turn on for 5 seconds. 15. Selectable Daylight Saving Time bypass. 16. Selectable automatic channel scanning. 17. Computer programmable for automatic backup and schedule changes through transmitter. 18. Switching information stored in non-volatile memory in the transmitter and broadcast at regular intervals. Each switch retains its instructions in non-volatile memory. 19. WT generator shall be factory preset as follows: a. Channel I.D. No. 1. b. Switch 00. c. Volume 50 percent. G. Clocks: Analog and digital. 1. Primex Wireless clocks /2 inch diameter to fit clock/speaker enclosure by others, color and finish as selected from manufacturer's standard colors and finishes. 3. Clocks shall have polycarbonate frame and polycarbonate lens. 4. Clock face shall be white, hour and minute hands shall be black, and be provided with a red sweep second hand. 5. Clocks shall be battery operated and have a 5 year battery life. 6. Clocks shall be capable of automatically adjusting for Daylight Saving Time. Function shall be disabled with an on-off switch located on the transmitter. 7. Time shall be automatically updated from the transmitter 6 times per day. 8. Clocks shall remember the time during changing of batteries. 9. Clock Lock: Tamper-proof/theft resistant hangers and slots in the backs of the clocks. 10. Provide 2 alkaline D cell batteries with each clock. 11. Clock receivers shall be as follows: a. Decode sensitivity: >-110 dbm. b. Receiver power: Two alkaline "D" cells. c. Antenna type: Internal. d. Antenna gain: -7 dbd. Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES

9 12. If transmitter stops transmitting valid time signals due to power failure, the clocks shall continue to function as accurate quartz clocks until a valid time signal is decoded. 13. For clock protection at locations as indicated, provide one wire guard for each clock: a. Model No , 14 by 14 inch size, for nominal 12.5 inch diameter clocks. b. Model No , 18 by 18 inch size, for 16 inch diameter clocks. H. Cable Connection Sealant: Radio Shack Coaxial Cable Connector Sealant , or accepted equivalent electrical grade silicone sealant. I. Software: 1. Provide Primex Wireless Scheduler Model software for installation and programming by the Board, compatible with the following PC operating systems: a. Windows 95 with Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 2. b. Windows 98. c. Windows ME. d. Windows NT with Service Pack 6a, Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 2, and valid administrator rights. e. Windows 2000 with valid administrator rights. f. Windows XP with valid administrator rights. 2. Software shall be in form of a CD, suitable for operation in standard CD-ROM drives. 3. Provide one cable, RS232 (9 wires straight through DB9- F/DB9-M) with USB-to-serial adapter if required for use in downloading programmed software to the WT generator. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION A. Do not proceed with the work of this section until conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the work have been corrected in an acceptable manner. 10 B. Verify that construction is complete in spaces to receive equipment and that rooms are clean, dry, and permanent air conditioning systems are operating. C. Verify 120 volt electrical outlets are located within 6 feet of location of transmitter and wireless tone generator, and outlets are operational and properly grounded. D. Verify a compatible PC, meeting requirements specified above, is available for dedicated use during software installation and system testing EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION NOTE TO SPECIFIER: The following GPS unit can be mounted on the roof, on a pole, or at a window for a clear view of the sky. If the GPS unit is mounted on the roof, it must be located on a suitable bracket, well above the level of standing or incidental water. If the GPS unit is mounted at a window, it must be located away from low-e glass. A. GPS Unit: Install on roof in location indicated, in clear view of the sky. Install unit in location free from standing water, and above accumulations of leaves or debris. Seal cable connection to GPS with cable connection sealant. NOTE TO SPECIFIER: Provide a platform or Primex Wireless Wall Mount Rack Model No for installation of the following transmitter, 2 to 3 feet above the floor. The preferred transmitter location for best transmission coverage is on the top floor of the building. The transmitter is designed for interior use only. It is not weatherproof. B. Transmitter: 1. Locate transmitter where indicated, a minimum of 2 to 3 feet above the floor, away from large metal objects such as filing cabinets, lockers or metal framed walls. 2. Attach receiver to transmitter using coaxial cable. 3. Connect antenna to transmitter, using care not to strip threads. 4. Connect power supply to the transmitter. 5. Set the channel number on the display to correspond to the FCC license. Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES

11 6. Plug power supply into electrical outlet. 7. Transmitter Programming: a. After the transmitter has been set up and is operating correctly, it shall be programmed to transmit a signal to the WT generator at predetermined intervals. b. Programming shall be according to a schedule and computer supplied by the Board. NOTE TO SPECIFIER: The following WT generator can be located anywhere within transmission range of the transmitter that is convenient for hook up to the intercom system as appropriate. Locate the WT generator within 8 feet of the intercom system. C. WT Generator: 1. Install the WT generator in location indicated, and secure to base using fasteners of type recommended by WT generator manufacturer, and suitable for the surface to which it is attached. 2. Align antenna vertically. 3. Verify factory switch settings as specified above are correct. 4. Relay output: If required, connect the relay output to the devices to be controlled. Confirm compatibility between relay output and devices. 5. Connect the WT generator to a standard 120 volt outlet. 6. Confirm that the green LED is flashing, to indicate that the WT generator is receiving a signal from the transmitter. D. Clocks: 1. Perform the following operations with each clock: a. Install D cell batteries. b. Set clock to correct time in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. c. Observe clock until valid signals are received and clock adjusts itself to correct time. d. Install the clock on the wall in the indicated location, plumb, level and tight against wall. Attach using Clock-Lock hanging method and tamperresistant fasteners as approved by clock manufacturer. 12 NOTE TO SPECIFIER: Delete the following if wire guards are not required. 2. Wire Guards: Secure to wall, using approved tamperresistant fasteners ADJUSTING A. Before final acceptance, inspect each item, adjust as required, modify the software as directed, and replace parts found defective CLEANING A. Before final acceptance, clean exposed surfaces of clocks, using cleaning methods recommended by clock manufacturer. Remove temporary labels from clock faces. Do not remove labels from backs of clocks DEMONSTRATION A. Provide training to the Board s representative on installing the software, adjusting and programming the transmitter, setting and adjusting WT generators, setting and adjusting clocks, replacing batteries, and routine maintenance PROTECTION A.
