Introduction The DN9824 is speaker processor that provides 2 inputs and 4 outputs, plus internal summing of the inputsaand B. Via a matrix, it is possible to assign any output to any input or to the sum of the inputs. It is further possible to establish the following configurations: Stereo or Dual 2-way systems, 3-way + Direct and 4-way systems, each with Mono Sub-channel, and also full range systems. Providing 48-bit filter algorithms, 24-bit AD/DA conversion and a dynamic range of 115dB, the DN9824 sets new standards for digital loudspeaker controllers and processors. The AD section uses 64 times oversampling, gain-ranging Sigma-Delta converters. The DA section uses 128 times oversampling Sigma-Delta converters. The overall signal processing is performed by two 24-bit Motorola DSP56007 signal processors. Each input incorporates a 7-band equalizer, allowing the user to assign high and low-cut, high and lowshelving or parametric peak-dip filters to each of the individual filter sections. Master delays are located in each of the input channels, which can be adjusted to affect INA, INB and INA+B. High-pass and low-pass filters are provided for the frequency crossover functions in all operation modes. The selection includes Linkwitz-Riley, Butterworth and Bessel type filters with switchable slopes (slopes are dependant on filter type) between 12, 18 and 24dB/oct. Also available are 6dB/ octave and 12dB/octave peaking filters. Six additional EQ filters are included in each output channel. Each can be set by the user to function as high-pass or low-pass, high or low-shelving, parametric peak-dip or all-pass filters. Each channel additionally provides a delay, a polarity switch, a programmable level control and a digital compressor/limiter with adjustable threshold, attack and release. A total number of 70 memory addresses, (50 preset and 20 freely assignable user programs), are available. Additional features are: - FLASH memory for software and preset updates via serial interfaces. - PC-based operation and configuration software running under Windows '95 / Windows '98 - Standard MIDI-interface - RS-232 interface - Back-lit graphic-display with 122 x 32 pixels - Inputs and outputs are electronically balanced, XLR-type connectors - Transformer-balancing for the inputs is optionally available - Input/Output level controls, Output Mute switch, and channel function indicators SUB, LO, MID and HI - Input/Output level meters, limiter and clipping LEDs Within this owner's manual, many of the DN9824's extensive features are explained in detail. For a complete understanding of its operation, please take the time to carefully read the manual. Keep the manual stored at a safe place to have it at hand for any further reference. 3

Important Notes Installation Refer to the Technical Spec for supply voltage range and fuse rating. To prevent any trouble or problems occurring from high temperatures inside the appliance, it is advisable not to use the DN9824 in environments where the ambient temperature exceeds 40 C. It is also important to provide sufficient air-flow around the unit. It is not recommended to install or operate the DN9824 directly above or below any device that generates a large magnetic field; e. g. power amplifiers. Cables For best results, the unit should be operated using balanced inputs and outputs. In this configuration, the non-inverting conductor (+) of the cable needs to be assigned to pin 2 of the XLR type connector, while the inverting conductor (-) is assigned to the connector's pin 3. The shielding has to be connected to pin 1. If the input channels have transformers for galvanic isolation, the cable screen should not be connected to the ground plain of the transmitting device. It is also possible to operate the appliance in unbalanced input/output configuration. In this configuration, the cable's "HOT" conductor must be connected to pin 2 and the screen to pin 1 of the XLR connector. To prevent a 6dB level attenuation, the user must short-circuit pins 1 and 3 of the XLR connector. On the other hand, if this measure leads to interference noise, removal this connection is recommended. Note - To prevent loss of higher frequencies, it is recommended that audio cables should not exceed 10m. Protection CAUTION: TO REDUCE RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK OR FIRE, DO NOT REMOVE COVER. NO USER SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE. DO NOT EXPOSE THIS EQUIPMENT TO RAIN OR MOISTURE. REFER SERVICING TO QUALIFIED SERVICE PERSONNEL. WARNING: THIS EQUIPMENT MUST BE EARTHED. If the unit is subjected to extreme fluctuations of temperature, e.g. from being transported from outside into a heated room, condensation may form. The unit should not be switched on until it has reached room temperature. 4

Front panel and controls Input level trim INA/ IN B Rotary controls set the input levels of the inputs A and B. The input signal can be amplified by up to 6dB (input level control set fully clockwise) or attenuated to - (input level control set fully anti-clockwise). Set the level as high as possible, without clipping, to achieve the highest possible Signal to Noise ratio. Input Level meters The level meters are for the user to monitor the input signal levels. They individually indicate the corresponding peak value of each input signal. The input level control should be set to a position such that the meters indicate a level between -6dB and -12dB. To prevent internal clipping, ensure that the clip LED's are not lit. Three different meter indication modes can be selected in the OPTIONS menu, "Normal fast", "Peak Hold" or "Slow Decay". Graphic display In the PLAY mode (normal operation), the 32 x 122 pixel LCD shows the number and name of the program and the current active configuration. In EDIT mode, the display shows individual function blocks including their corresponding parameters and parameter values. Additionally, and depending on the chosen mode, the display also indicates option menus, status messages, etc.. EDIT key This key allows the user to enter the EDIT mode. While in PLAY mode, press the EDIT key, the last modified parameter of the active program is displayed. Using the SELECT ( or ) keys gives the user the facility to select (highlight) the next or previous parameter in the displayed function block. The value of the highlighted parameter can be altered by using the rotary PARAMETER encoder. SELECT key While in PLAY mode, press ENTER, then pressing the SELECT key will select the next program in the program list. While in EDIT mode, pressing the SELECT key selects the next parameter within the displayed function block. While in OPTIONS mode, pressing the SELECT key will allow the user to scroll forward through the user options. SELECT key While in PLAY mode, press ENTER, then pressing the SELECT key will select the previous program in the program list. 12 ENTER key The ENTER key allows the user to recall a program. For further details, please refer to the chapter called "Operation". Rotary PARAMETER encoder Press the ENTER key, and rotating the PARAMETER encoder selects a program. Press ENTER again to activate the desired program. In EDIT mode, the encoder is used to alter parameter values or scroll through function blocks. For further details, please refer to the chapter called "Operation". OUTPUT level control potentiometers These rotary controls are used to set the levels of output channels, allowing the user to match the DN9824 to the input levels of the following chained devices. Correctly setting these controls results in an improved Signal to Noise ratio. In most cases, good results are achieved when setting the controls to their center detented position (-6dB). The digital output gain control (accessed in each output menu) should be used only when higher output levels are needed. It is not recommended to use the digital output gain control for large attenuation, since this would reduce the dynamic range of the D/A converters. These rotary controls also provide push key functionality, which, in the EDIT mode, allow the user to switch between the same function block in different output channels. Output MUTE keys These keys allow the user to mute the output signal of the corresponding output. Pressing a key once switches the mute function ON, and the key's red LED lights. Pressing the key again switches the mute function OFF and the key's LED is switched off. Channel function indicators SUB, LO, MID, HI These LED's indicate which frequency band each channel is set to. If a channel is configured for full range operation, all of its' function LED's are lit simultaneously. OUTPUT Level meter indicators These meters indicate the peak level of the corresponding output. The DN9824 should be operated at a level such that the clip LED's are not lit, as this could indicate internal clipping. The meter response can be set to "Peak-Hold", "Normal fast" or "Slow Decay" using the OPTIONS menu. OUTPUT Limiter indicators The LIMIT LED's light when the compressor/limiter of the corresponding channel is activated; e.g. when the audio signal level exceeded the previously set threshold and, therefore, the output level is compressed or limited. OUTPUT CLIPindication The CLIP indicator lights when the signal exceeds the output signal range. POWER-ON switch This switch turns the DN9824's mains power ON and OFF. The KT logo above the switch will illuminate when power is switched on. 6

Rear Panel Connections IN connectors These are the 2 electronically balanced inputs of the DN9824. Each of the inputs also has a Direct Out connector which allows the user to feed the input signal to any other device that needs to be operated with the unaltered source signal. Atransformer option is available. OUT connectors These are the electronically balanced outputs of the DN9824. NOTE:- Before powering the unit, please ensure that power amplifiers and/or loudspeaker systems are always connected to the correct output channel. The individual configuration of the output channels is displayed through the "channel function indicators" on the front panel. MIDI IN / THRU / OUT connectors These sockets allow the user to control several DN9824 units via a single master unit. Exchanging memory contents in both directions is possible as well. Controlling the DN9824 is also possible from a computer's desktop, providing that a standard MIDI interface has been installed in the user PC / Notebook. RS-232 interface This interface allows connection to a PC to upload new host code and to provide a means of editing the DN9824 functions and parameters remotely. Mains connector Standard IEC mains inlet connector. See Technical Specification for fuse rating. 7

Operation PLAY mode (normal operation) At power on, the unit enters PLAY mode. NOTE: If the new program is a different configuration to the last, the user will be asked to confirm change of configuration. Press the ENTER key to confirm and recall the new program. Recalling a factory preset (program memories F01 to F50) provides the easiest method of achieving good results with the DN9824. Factory preset programs are carefully designed, and are stored, internally, in non-volatile FLASH memory. The required loudspeaker combination can be selected from the list of factory presets and the DN9824 will automatically set the optimum parameters for the chosen components. To apply changes to a factory preset, it first has to be copied to a user-definable preset location (U01 to U 20) and the name changed to make it unique (For further information refer to chapter called STORE mode). Possible configurations for the DN9824 are:- - Stereo 2-way. The parameters of the inputs A and B and the Low and High outputs are simultaneously set to identical values. - Dual 2-way. Input and output parameters can be set separately from each other. - Mono 3-way with Direct Out (3-Way Sub + 1). The sub channel, as well as the Direct Out, can be assigned to IN A, IN B or to the summed, monaural signal of the two input channels. - Mono 4-way. The sub channel can be assigned to IN A, IN B or to the summed, monaural signal of the two input channels. - Full range. All outputs can be freely assigned to IN A, IN B or to a summed, monaural signal of the two input channels. EDIT mode Enter EDIT mode by pressing the EDIT key. To exit the EDIT mode, press EDIT again. When in EDIT mode, use the SELECT ( or ) keys to highlight (light text on black background) the function block title at the top of the display. Use the rotary PARAMETER encoder to scroll through function blocks until the desired function block is selected for editing. Use the SELECT ( or ) keys to highlight the parameter for editing and then use the rotary PARAMETER encoder to change the value/text of that parameter. When a parameter has been changed, a flashing "E" appears in the top right corner of the LCD, informing the user that the selected program is being edited but has not been saved.! CAUTION! These alterations have not yet been stored and will be lost with the next program change command. The user now has different options to continue:- - To store the edited program, see STORE mode. When stored, the flashing "E" will disappear. - To continue altering the parameter values, continue as above. - To return to the original (unedited) program, press ENTER and enter the program recall process. This cancels the EDIT function and discards the parameter value changes of the selected program. 8

When in EDIT mode, pressing an output level control pot will enable the user to quickly get to an output function block for that particular output, which can then be edited. Pressing another output pot will take the user to the same function block but in the new output channel. The user is able to access and edit all parameters in the user memories U01 to U20. The user can copy factory presets (F01 to F 50) to user-definable presets (U01 to U20) and then edit them. All parameters and their individual setting ranges and effects are described in the section headed "Description of Function Blocks and Parameters". 17 Midi channel settings Rx and Tx The DN9824 will transmit and receive MIDI program change messages on a specified channel. Here, the user is able to set the MIDI channel for the unit to send and receive MIDI data. The selected channel also transmits the MIDI System Exclusive messages (SysEx). The following settings can be selected. OFF - The DN9824 does not react to MIDI data. No MIDI data is sent and SysEx is off. OMNI - The DN9824 receives MIDI data from all 16 MIDI channels (OMNI MODE). MIDI data is sent via channel 1. 1to16-The DN9824 sends and receives MIDI and SysEx data only via the selected MIDI channel (1 to 16). Klark Teknik ID (hex): E DN9824 device ID (hex):48 Send edited parameters Options are off, To MIDI and To RS-232 During editing and program changes, the DN9824 is capable of transmitting parameters, in 'real time', via the serial port(s). At program change, a complete parameter dump can be sent out. The option menu allows the user to program whether data is being transmitted, and, if so, which interface is to be used. RS-232 to MIDI Options On or Off This function provides the facility to pass data that is received at the RS-232 port directly onto the MIDI OUT port. This effectively creates a "RS-232 to MIDI bridge". In this way, the user can control more DN9824 units from a PC. It allows transfer of all user programs and system data of the unit via MIDI. Therefore, the MIDI OUT of the unit has to be connected to the MIDI IN of a unit that is capable of receiving MIDI data (e.g. another DN9824, a computer, etc..). NOTE, please make sure that both units are on the same MIDI channel. Software revision This option shows the revision of the DN9824 host software. E.g. SOFTWARE REV:

The following provides the user with a description of all function blocks that can appear in the EDIT mode. The list includes all available parameters, value ranges, and settings. Master EQ1-7 Each input channel of the DN 9824 has 7 bands of parametric EQ. Each band can be set up to be one of the following EQ function blocks. Function Block Settings/Value Range Default Type & Parameter BYPASS, PEQ, LOSLV, HISLV, BYPASS HIPASS, LOPAS PEQ Freq 20Hz to 20kHz 1.00kHz Q 0.4 to Gain -12dB to +12dB 0.0dB LOSLV Freq 20Hz to 20kHz 1.00kHz Slope 6dB, 12dB 6dB Gain -12dB to +12dB 0.0dB HISLV Freq 20Hz to 20kHz 1.00kHz Slope 6dB, 12dB 6dB Gain -12dB to +12dB (+6dB max with slope 12dB) 0.0dB HIPASS Freq 20Hz to 20kHz 1.00kHz Slope 6dB, 12dB 6dB Q 0.4 to 2.0 (Q only with slope 12dB) 0.7 LOPASS Freq 20Hz to 20kHz 1.00kHz Slope 6dB, 12dB 6dB Q 0.4 to 2.0 (Q only with slope 12dB) 0.7 Type describes the selected filter type. When selecting BYPASS, no equalisation effect is applied to the signal. PEQ provides a parametric Peak/Dip Filter with programmable frequency, Q and gain. LOSLV/HISLV are Low Shelving or High Shelving equalizers respectively. Their parameters are frequency, slope, and gain. The parameters of the LOPASS/HIPASS filters are frequency and slope (Q is only available with 12dB slope). Freq sets the center frequency of parametric EQ's and the cutoff frequency of LOSLV/HISLV and LOPASS/HIPASS filters. The value of the parameter Q determines the quality or bandwidth of parametric EQs. Higher Q values result in a narrow banded filter while smaller Q values result in an increased bandwidth. The Q parameter also describes the quality and, therefore, the graph of LOPASS/HIPASS filters. Gain sets the degree of amplification or attenuation of the parametric EQ or the low shelving and high shelving equalizers. The stepwidth is 1 db. The Slope parameter describes the steepness, or order, of the filter for the LOSLV/HISLV and LOPASS/HIPASS equalizers. 14

Master Delay The master delays are located in the inputs INA, IN B and in the summed input signal INA+B. The delay times are displayed in milliseconds and microseconds while the equivalent distances are displayed in feet, inches, meters or centimeters. The environmental temperature appears as an additional parameter whenever distances are displayed. Thus, up to three parameters are available. Parameter Settings / Value range Default Delay 1.9 ms ms 1917 µs - 900,000 µs 2 feet feet (@ 20 C) 26 inch inch (@ 20 C) 0.7 m m (@ 20 C) 66 cm cm (@ 20 C) 1.9 ms Unit ms, µs, feet, inch, m, cm ms Temp -20 C to + 60 C +20 C (only effective when distance is selected) The Delay parameter determines the delay time of the corresponding input channel. Unit allows the user to select between time or distance display. Distances are automatically converted into delay times plus the calculation additionally includes the influence of the environmental temperature. Temp allows the user to enter a value for the environmental temperature. This parameter appears only when the selected display unit is distance. The effect of the environmental temperature on the resulting delay time is automatically included in the calculation. Routing and Output Label Any combination of input signals (IN A, IN B or IN A+B) can be routed to each of the outputs of the DN9824. Parameter Settings / Value range Default Source Label INA, IN B, INA+B OFF, SUB, LO, MID, HI, SUB-LO, LO-MID, MID-HI,LO-MID-HI, SUB-LO-MID-HI INAorINB Depends on preset configuration Label sets the channel function indicators on the front panel of the unit. 15

Output Channel EQ1-6 Each of the four output channels of the DN 9824 has 6 bands of parametric EQ, each of which allows the user to program additional equalization for the individual channels. Function Block Settings / Value Range Default Type & Parameter BYPASS, PEQ, LOSLV, HISLV, BYPASS HIPASS, LOPASS, ALLPASS PEQ Freq 20Hz to 20kHz 1.00 khz Q 0.4 to Gain -12dB to +12dB 0.0 db LOSLV Freq 20Hz to 20kHz 1.00 khz Slope 6dB, 12dB 6dB Gain -12dB to +12dB 0.0 db HISLV Freq 20Hz to 20kHz 1.00 khz Slope 6dB, 12dB 6dB Gain -12dB to + 12dB (+6 db max, with slope 12dB) 0.0 db HIPASS Freq 20Hz to 20kHz 1.00 khz Slope 6dB, 12dB 6dB Q 0.4 to 2.0 (Q only with slope 12dB) 0.7 LOPASS Freq 20Hz to 20kHz 1.00 khz Slope 6dB, 12dB 6dB Q 0.4 to 2.0 (Q only with slope 12dB) 0.7 ALLPASS Freq 20Hz to 20kHz 1.00 khz Order 1st, 2nd 1st Q 0.4 to 2.0 (Q only with 2nd Order) 0.7 Type describes the selected filter type. When selecting BYPASS, no equalisation effect is applied to the signal. PEQ provides a parametric peak/dip filter with programmable frequency, Q, and gain. LOSLV/HISLV are Low Shelving and High Shelving Equalizer respectively. Their parameters are: frequency, slope, and gain. The parameters of the LOPASS/HIPASS filters are frequency, slope and Q (Q only available with 12 db slope). The ALLPASS filter can be used to compensate phase differences at the x-over frequency. Freq sets the center frequency of parametric EQ's and the cutoff frequency of LOSLV/HISLV and LOPASS/HIPASS filters. With the ALLPASS filter this is the frequency at which the phase is shifted by st nd 90 (1 orderallpass) or by 180 (2 orderallpass). The value of the parameter Q determines the quality or bandwidth of parametric EQ's. Higher Q values result in a narrow banded filter while smaller Q values result in an increased bandwidth. The Q- parameter also describes the quality and, therefore, the shape of the graph of the LOPASS/HIPASS nd filters. The Q parameter is also found in the 2 order ALLPASS filter. It is used to set the phase response in the transition band (lower Q settings result in flat phase response while higher Q settings produce a steeper phase response). Gain sets the degree of amplification or attenuation of the parametric EQ or the LOSLV/HISLV equalizers. The stepwidth is 1 db. The Slope parameter describes the steepness, or order, of the filter for LOSLV/HISLV and LOPASS/HIPASS equalizers. 16

The Order parameter determines whether a first order or second order ALLPASS filter is selected. A first orderallpass filter shifts the phase by 180 and, at the cutoff frequency, by 90. Asecond order ALLPASS filter shifts phase by 360 and, at the cutoff frequency, by 180. Additionally, a second order ALLPASS filter includes Q which determines the slope of the phase change at the cutoff frequency. High Q gives a steeper slope than low Q. 17

HiPass X-Over The frequency crossover filter consists of a High pass filter in one channel and a Low pass filter in the adjacent channel. In this filter block, the frequency x-over filter's Hi-Pass parameters are set. Parameter Settings / Value range Default Type Thru, 6dB 12dB (with Q = 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0) Bessel 12dB, Butterworth 12dB, Linkwitz 12dB, Bessel 18dB, Butterworth 18dB, Bessel 24dB, Butterworth 24dB, Linkwitz 24dB thru Freq 2Hz to 20kHz 1.00kHz Pol Norm, inv Norm The Type parameter defines the filter characteristics of the Hi-Pass x-over filter. Different slopes and filter responses (Bessel, Butterworth, Linkwitz-Riley) are available and the filter can be bypassed (thru). The corresponding Lo-Pass x-over filter should be set to the same characteristics. Freq sets the Hi-Pass x-over filter's cutoff frequency. The corresponding Lo-Pass x-over filter should be set to the same cutoff frequency. Pol sets the polarity of the filter. 18

LoPass X-Over The frequency crossover filter consists of a low pass filter in one channel and a high pass filter in the adjacent channel. In this filter block, the frequency x-over filter's Lo-Pass parameters are set. Parameter Settings / Value range Default Type Thru, 6dB 12dB (with Q = 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 2.0) Bessel 12dB, Butterworth 12dB, Linkwitz 12dB, Bessel 18dB, Butterworth 18dB, Bessel 24dB, Butterworth 24dB, Linkwitz 24dB thru Freq 20 Hz to 20 khz 1.00kHz Pol Norm, inv Norm The Type parameter defines the filter characteristics of the Lo-Pass x-over filter. Different slopes and filter responses (Bessel, Butterworth, Linkwitz-Riley) are available and the filter can be bypassed (thru). The corresponding Hi-Pass x-over filter should be set to the same characteristics. Freq sets the Lo-Pass x-over filter's cutoff frequency. The corresponding Hi-Pass filter should be set to the same cutoff frequency. Pol sets the polarity of the filter 19

Channel Delay Achannel delay is provided in each of the output channels. The delay time or acoustical distance is displayed in milliseconds, microseconds, feet, inches, meters, or centimeters. The environmental temperature appears as additional parameter whenever distances are displayed. Thus, up to three parameters are available. Parameter Settings / Value range Default Delay 0 ms ms 0 µs - 900,000 µs 0 feet feet (@ 20 C) 0 inch inch (@ 20 C) 0 m m (@ 20 C) 0 cm cm (@ 20 C) 0.0 ms Unit ms, µs, feet, inch, m, cm ms Temp -20 C to + 60 C +20 C (only effective when distance is selected) The Delay parameter determines the delay time of the corresponding channel or the distance between different loudspeaker clusters. 20

Compressor The compressor automatically reduces level peaks above a certain threshold and, therefore, provides reliable protection against excessive signals causing problems in subsequent units in the signal path. Parameter Settings / Value range Default Thrsh -9dBu to +21dBu 8.7V +21dBu 0.27V to 8.7V (Bypassed) -30dB to 0dB Rat 1/1.0, 1/1.4, 1/ 2.0, 1/4.0, 1/8.0 1/ 2.0 Attack 0 to 99 ms 5 ms Rls 50 ms to 999 ms ms ms Limiter The limiter provides additional protection against the occurrence of clipping and overload conditions. The maximum level of the audio signal is limited to the set threshold value. Parameter Settings / Value range Default Thrsh -9dBu to +21dBu +21dBu 0.27V to 8.7V (Bypassed) -30dB to 0dB Rls 50 ms to 999 ms 100 ms 21

LEVEL Each output channel has a digital level control and a polarity switch. Parameter Settings / Value range Default Level Off, -30dB to +6dB 0.0dB Polarity Normal, Inverted Normal The Level parameter sets the output level of the corresponding output channel and can be adjusted in steps of 0.5dB. Polarity defines the individual polarity of the audio signals of each output. Depending on the characteristic of the frequency crossover filter, inverting the polarity of a channel's signal may become necessary. The following table provides the user with a list of filter types for which a channel's signal should be inverted for the corresponding filter pair. Bessel 12dB Butterworth 12dB Bessel 18dB Bessel 24dB 22
