1 " " LOCKOUT RELAY A typical Lockout Relay would have two positions "TRIP - RESET". Under normal condition, the handle would be turned to "RESET" position and would remain mechanically latched at this position. The Lockout Relay contact LR which is in series with the Lockout Relay coil would be closed at the 'RESET" position only. The fault contact FC makes only when there is a fault in the circuit. When the Lockout Relay coil LR is energise, it would released the mechanical latch holding the handle at 'RESET" position and the handle would spring return to 'TRIP" position. So long as FC remains at close contact condition ( due tothe presence of a fault in the circuit ) the handle will not latched at "RESET" position but would always spring return to "TRIP " L FC D LR LR D N APPLICATION The Lockout Relay is a high speed Automatic Trip/Manual Reset auxiliary relay permitting simultaneous operations of up to contacts from 0A to 0A for AC and 0A to A for DC. Lockout Relays are normally connected to the fault sensing contacts of the circuit breakers. If a fault should occur, the Lockout Relays ensure that all the critical circuits are isolated and would remain isolated so long as the fault is not cleared. It's positive trip action ensures that all the contacts would perform as to requirements and it multi-contact arrangement eliminates the need for several control relays contacts. 2 " " LOCKOUT RELAY When coil LR is energise, the mechanical latch holding the handle is release, and the handle spring returns to "TRIP" position. Contact LR opens to isolate the coil from the power supply to prevent overheating of the coil. TYPES OF LOCKOUT RELAY b. Lockout Relay without manual release. Testing of the switching system can be carried out by energising the coil. Two types of Lockout Relays are available: a. Lockout Relay with Manual Release to allow testing of the of the switching system. TRIP RESET TRIP RESET 0 0 max. 3 " " LOCKOUT RELAY CONSTRUCTION DETAILS The parts of the Lockout Relays are:. The Electro-magnetic System The coils of the electro-magnetic system is totally encapsulated with a series built in contact LR. This contact will make at "RESET" or "ON" position and opens at 'TRIP" or "" position. The same coil of rated voltage can be used for 0/0hz or DC. Coils are available for voltage of V-00V/0hz, V-0V/0hz and V-0V/DC. The specifications of the coils in ohms are: Voltage -V V 00V 0V/V 0/0V Resistance.... Pull-in voltage Normal coil 0% 0% 0% 0% 0% Special coil 0% 0% 0% 0% 0% In selecting the coil voltage of the Lockout Relay, it is important to verify if additional coils e.g. protective relay coils etc.would be connected in series with the Lockout Relay coil. I n order to ensure that the Lockout Relay can trip should a fault occurs, it is important : To adjust the setting of the protective relay T coil so that the Lockout Relay can trip when the coil is energise- refer Fig. b. If the protective relay T coil is not adjustable, it is important that the coil voltage of the Lockout Relay is properly selected to match with the series coil T so the Lockout Relay coil can trip when energise. In such a case, the rated coil voltage of the Lockout relay should be lower than the DC bus voltage. It is important to ensure that the voltage V across the Lockout Relay coil should not be lower than the Pull-in voltage as specified above. The current flowing in the circuit is sufficient to energise and trip the Lockout Relay coil. WARNING To obtain maximum tripping speed, the Lockout Relay coils are rated for intermittent duty only. Continous energisation of the coil and may result in overheating of the coil.. The Switching Contacts System The contacts used are all double break fast switching silver alloy contacts and are housed in high grade thermoplastic insulating materials. For corrosive environment like petro-chemicals plants, gold contacts are available. Switching speed is 0 milli-seconds. Type A/A have four contact per stage of contact chamber and types C/C/C have contacts per stage of contact chamber. OPTIONAL EXTRAS a. Trip Indicator M0 The Trip Indicator is a mechanical coloured indicator to show the "TRIP /"RESET" that the handle has been turned to. Hence, when the handle is turn and remain latch at "RESET" position, the trip indicator shows Green on the window of the escutcheon plate. If a fault condition arises, the handle will turn to "TRIP" position and the indicator will show Red on the window. 19 DISCREPANCY SWITCH mimic panel and the actual field condition exists. c. To TRIP the circuit breaker ( to close the tripping circuit of the breaker ) at position "A", it is necessary to Push-in and Turn the handle to position "AB". The handle will spring return back to position "A " when release. The double action of Push-in and Turn is a safety precaution to prevent accidental operation of the Discrepancy Switch. Auxiliary contacts which operates when the handle is Push-in can be incorporated for additional safety circuits. d. To "CLOSE" the circuit breaker ( to activate the closing circuit of the breaker) at position "E", it is necessary to Push-in and Turn the handle to position "EB". The handle will spring return back to position "E" when release. The double action of Push-in and Turn is a safety precaution to prevent accidental operation of the Discrepancy Switch. Auxiliary contacts which operates when the handle is Push-in can be incorporated for additional safety circuits ( for Size S0 and S switch only ) A APPLICATION AB The Discrepancy Switch allows operation of the circuit breakers remotely from the control room. An illuminated handle on the discrepancy switch mounted on the mimic panel would shows the discrepancy between what is shown on the mimic diagram and the real condition of the circuit breaker. In the normal condition, none of the panel lights would light up. Circuit breakers are controlled by a negative lighting system. Hence when the lamp is lighted " ON", means there is a discrepancy between what is indicated in the control room and the actual field condition of the circuit breaker. From the above requirement, a large number of push-buttons, selector switches and pilot lamps would normally be required to fulfil the control functions. A discrepancy switch with multi-function can combine all these requirements in a single cam switch. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION - Fig. A typical Discrepancy Switch would have four positions AB, A, E and EB. Position A and B are stay-put positions. To turn from position A to AB, it is necessary to Push-in at position A and then turn to position AB. Handle will spring-return back to position A when release. Similarly for positions E and EB. Mechanical interlocks will prevent turning of the handle from A to B when handle is Push-in. The switch would operated at two levels: a. The handle can be Turn from A to B to give a semaphore indication in the mimic panel. b. The handle will light up whenever any discrepancies between the condition on the E EB Fig. - Principle of operation

20 DISCREPANCY SWITCH Push-in Level EB Normal Level E AB A. TYPES OF DISCREPANCY SWITCH Kraus & Naimer discrepancy switch are available in the following sizes: a. The switches are suitable for both AC and DC switching. Type CA- with gold contacts are specially suitable for : Low voltage switching of electronics and thermocouple circuits due to it's low contact resistance. Corrosive environment where the gold contact prevent oxidation of the contact surface which can increases contact resistance. In selecting the switch model for DC switching, the selection of appropriate switch depends on: The DC supply voltage The DC load current The type of load - resistive/inductive In selecting the switch model for low voltage switching, the Dry Circuit Rating should not be exceeded. The Dry Circuit Rating refers to the relationship between the supply voltage and load current. If the value exceeds, arcing may occur which would remove the layer of gold on the contact. This removes the discrepancy between the mimic diagram and the true position of the breaker. Pushing-in and Turning the discrepancy switch handle at the TRIP position will activates the tripping circuit of the breaker Push-in and Turning the handle at the 'CLOSE" position will activates the closing circuit of the breaker. The switching configuration required is as shown in Fig.. Contact rating required is A. Auxiliary contact required is NO + NC. Voltage of the lighting system is 0V EB E A AB N Closed contact Continous contact Residual contact Fig. - Typical Discrepancy Switch Circuit Fig. - Required contact configuration a. Typical Specifications When the handle of a discrepancy switch is turn 90 degrees, the mimic diagram of the control panel will immediately indicate any circuit interruptions. The handle of the discrepancy switch will be illuminated to indicate a discrepancy between the condition as indicated in the mimic panel and the actual condition of the circuit breaker. For example, if the circuit breaker and the discrepancy switch handle is in the is in the "CLOSED" position, the handle will not be illuminated because there is no discrepancy between what is shown in the mimic panel and the actual condition of the circuit breaker. If the circuit breaker TRIP due to a fault condition, the handle of the discrepancy switch will be illuminated because a discrepancy arise i.e. the handle is still in the 9.
