5 1. General Description 1.1 Overview The SkyNav GM10 is a 12 channel continuous tracking GPS receiver optimized for high sensitivity and low cost applications. The GPS signal is applied to the antenna input of the module, and a complete serial data message with position, velocity and time information is presented at the serial interface. The module contains a low noise amplifier for passive antenna operation, RF downconverter, baseband processor, Flash memory and navigation software; it provides one 3V (5V TTL input compatible) UART serial ports for external communication. The GM10 provides excellent navigation performance under static or dynamic conditions in areas with limited sky view like urban canyons, high sensitivity for weak signal operation. Power saving mode make this product suitable for handheld and battery-operated devices. The GM10 has an exceptionally small surface mount package (25.4mm x 25.4mm x 3mm) with a highly integrated architecture that requires minimal external components, allowing easy integration into host systems. 1.2 Block Diagram Jul.2006 GM10-DS-1.0 GPS Receiver Module 1

7 1.6 Power supply Regulated power for the GM10 is required. The input voltage should be 3.0V ±10%, Maximum, current is no less than 100mA. The main 3 volts supply is fed to the voltage pin of the GM10 GPS Receiver Module. Suitable decoupling of the individual power supply pins must be provided by external decoupling circuitry. 1.7 Antenna The GM10 GPS receiver is designed for supporting the active antenna or passive antenna. The gain of active antenna should be no less than 15dB. The maximum noise figure should be no more than 2.5dB. 1.8 UART Ports Two asynchronous UART ports are available for serial interfacing. The baud rates are fully programmable. The data format is however fixed: x, N, 8,1, i.e. x baud, No parity, eight data bits and 1 stop bit. No other data formats are supported. LSB is sent first. CMOS signal levels are used. The GM10 default bit rate is set up 4800 bps. However, the user can change the default bit rate to any value from 4800 bps to 115kbps. The UART ports are named UART0 and UART1. UART0 is used e.g. for booting and NMEA interface. UART1 can be utilized for manufacturer debug. 1.9 Protocols The GM10 supports serial NMEA0183 protocol and UBP Binary Protocol. 2. If BOOT_INT is logic 1, then thegm10 will start executing code from on board flash upon system reset. If BOOT_INT is logic 0, then the GM10 will enter boot mode upon system reset to receive programming information in COF format. This feature can be used to download a flash re-programmer into on board ROM to update or change flash code. The sense of the BOOT_INT line is only read upon power up or system reset. Notice: User Must Connect This Pin to Logic Level High for normal Run Note 2: If users provide the active antenna s power supply, then this power supply should be connected to V_ANT pin, moreover, VCC_RF pin should be NC. Software Protocol 5.1 NMEA 0183 Protocol The NMEA protocol is an ASCII-based protocol, Records start with a $ and with carriage return/line feed. GPS specific messages all start with $GPxxx where xxx is a three-letter identifier of the message data that follows. NMEA messages have a checksum, which allows detection of corrupted data transfers.
