2 High technology for the global satellite market Over the course of five decades, Tesat-Spacecom has developed in-depth expertise in manufacturing of payload equipment for communication satellites and has established itself as a clear European market leader. On its 60,000m² premises in Backnang, Germany, 1,200 employees develop, assemble, integrate, and test systems and equipment for telecommunication via satellite. To date, more than 700 space projects have been completed. The accumulated in-orbit lifetime heritage exceeds 250 million hours. 1. The Scope page 4 2. The Facts page 6 3. The Products page 8 Our product offerings encompass highly reliable equipment as for example the travelling wave tube amplifiers, multiplexers, waveguide switches, and modulators, which along with complete systems are delivered to all leading satellite manufacturers worldwide. Therefore, we offer the complete communication technology necessary to disseminate television signals via satellite to each household on ground. More than half of all communication satellites The World of Tesat-Spacecom in orbit operate with Tesat equipment on board. The future global communication infrastructure has to support security-related real time applications with ubiquitous coverage. This will only be viable with most advanced communication systems operating in space. Tesat has successfully developed the key element for this space infrastructure, the optical broadband Laser Communication Terminal (LCT). Using lasers, such terminals can transmit data and imagery between satellites and from satellites to ground at unprecedented data rates. We at Tesat have demonstrated for the first time the operational capabilities of such broadband LCTs in space. Given our competitive position in the commercial satellite market and our top quality standards, Tesat products are today the first choice for various satellitebased systems operated by several governments worldwide for security and defense related applications. 4. 3 Why use Tesat s link Products? 1The Scope Why Use Tesat s link Products? Tesat-Spacecom s link Products feature a unique combination of capabilities in the areas of RF technology, communication technology, digital signal processing and high speed digital technology. This strongly linked know-how in the different high speed digital technology areas allows us to design and develop highly advanced communication and data processing equipment for satellites. Our modulators feature highest data rates for the transmission of image and sensor data from satellites to ground covering the established X-Band as well as the upcoming Ka- Band. Our Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C) Transponders for S- and Ku-Band are based on a fully digital design, which provides a high degree of flexibility in terms of transmission schemes and frequency agility. In addition to the standard schemes the transponders can operate in spread spectrum mode as well as in high data rate modes. Our products make full use of the Tesat qualified and proven manufacturing technologies and facilities, which process more than thousand satellite equipment units per year. All our designs are suited for LEO, MEO and GEO applications, paving the way for multiple applications. For the design of the units, Tesat features a broad system knowledge based on simulation models that allows for analysis of the end-to-end transmission chain. Our process engineering and design advances are based on more than three decades of experience, which we pass on to our customers for their benefit. Key Benefits: excellent experience Extensive engineering know-how Outstanding space heritage Highest data rates High flexibility X-Band 8-PSK Modulator S-Band TT&C Transponder 5

4 Applications / Key Capabilities For more than 30 years Tesat has been working on digital communication for satellite applications, including studies and developments in the field of modulation, demodulation and on-board processing. Later the focus of activities was set on high data rate transmissions. The first flight project was the development, manufacturing and test of the modulators for the European Envisat satellite. Since then more than 140 units were contracted to Tesat. The Facts Applications / Key Capabilities With the improved resolution of sensors and earth observation instruments, the amount of data to be transmitted from Earth Observation or Meteorological Satellites is steadily increasing. To cope with this increasing data volume, the required data rates for the transmission to the ground need to be augmented. Tesat offers a family of modulator products to satisfy these requirements. Products in X-Band (8 GHz range) and Ka-Band (26 GHz range) are available, which are all designed for LEO as well as MEO and GEO applications with a 15 years lifetime. A new modulator offering a channel data rate of up to 2 Gbit/sec is currently under qualification until The control of satellites is accomplished via the on-board TT&C transponder. Therefore, these units need to fulfill highest standards with respect to reliability and operational safety. The flexibility in the used transmission schemes and carrier frequencies is becoming important. Tesat has developed a new generation of TT&C Transponders in S-Band and Ku-Band to satisfy these requirements. Ku-Band TT&C Transponder Architecture Tesat Downlink Subsystem integrated on Flight Panel including X-Band Modulators 7

5 Modulators for transmission of highest data rates in space The Tesat modulators are specifically designed to fulfill the increasing demands for high data rates required for earth observation, meteorological and data relay missions. Our modular designs allow simple adaptations to specific customer needs concerning e.g. data rate, transmission frequency, interfaces or implementation of forward error correction. 6 Flexible TT&C Transponders for optimum satellite control The next steps The Tesat TT&C Transponders are specifically designed for high flexibility with respect to operational needs. A fully digital implementation of demodulator and modulator provides various transmission schemes including standard mode, spread spectrum mode or direct modulation for high data rate applications. Due to its modularity, the design can be easily adapted to specific project requirements especially in terms of interfaces. Frequency Band S-Band TT&C Transponder Ku-Band TT&C Transponder (RX and TX) Transmission Schemes Standard PCM / BPSK / PM, DSSS, BPSK / QPSK Design Status Fully qualified, FMs delivered Fully qualified Orbits Design Lifetime Benefits of Tesat s Ku-Band TTC Receiver and Transmitter: Covers whole Ku-Band:» Uplink 12,500-14,500 MHz» Downlink 10,700-12,500 MHz In orbit frequency agility:» 770 MHz in uplink and 500 MHz in downlink» High output power (up to 5 W in S-Band, up to 2 W in Ku-Band) Flexibility in operation modes and data rates» Dual mode operation in uplink: Standard FM and PM demodulators» Dual mode operation in downlink: Standard BSPK/PM and QPSK» High Rate Downlink mode (up to 12 Mbit/sec) Compatible to major satellite platforms Modular design» Cost effective approach, low NRE due to frequency agility» Receiver & Transmitter prepared for use of spread spectrum schemes LEO, MEO, GEO, LX 15 years PCM/BPSK/FM, PCM/BPSK/PM, others on request, High Rate QPSK Downlink S-Band TT&C Transponder In the future required data rates are expected to increase further while the available frequency resources for data transmissions remain limited. This calls for spectrum efficient waveforms, which is perfectly met with Tesat link Products. Gigabit Modulator for High Rate Downlink Systems: To support future systems Tesat-Spacecom has started the development of a modulator with a couple of groundbreaking properties: Modulation up to 64-APSK Powerful SCCC encoding according to CCSDS Designed for Ka- and X-Band for a symbol rate up to 500 MBaud The design has been verified with an EM, an EQM of this new modulator will be available in Gigabit Modulator Ku-Band TT&C Receiver TT&C Transponders: The Tesat approach is to be able to offer a family of TT&C transponders for different application scenarios. Further to the available S-Band transponder, a Ku-Band transponder has been qualified with first FM deliveries planned for end Within the developments further operational modes will be implemented, which are contained within the TT&C standards, allowing systems to expand the functionality of the TT&C links. A Ka-Band Demonstrator incl. Spread Spectrum technology has been validated. Ku-Band TT&C Transmitter 10 11
