2 Bengaluru International Airport (BLR) Ownership Private promoters hold a 74% stake in BIAL while the Government holds the remaining 26%. The Shareholding structure of BIAL is as follows: Siemens Project Ventures, Germany: 40% Unique (Flughafen Zürich AG) Zurich Airport, Switzerland: 17% Larsen & Toubro, India: 17% Airports Authority of India: 13% KSIIDC, Government of Karnataka: 13% Bangalore currently has the fourth largest airport in India and is among the fastest growing. 3 Airport facts Began operations on 24-May The airport has: 20 gates, 8 aero-bridges, including one double arm 9 remote bus bays. Common airport infrastructure created Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE) enabled check-in counters: 53 2D bar code enabled Gate counters 20 Common infrastructure created with 18 self check in Kiosks ( CUSS enabled as well) Common Airport Infrastructure for Automated Baggage reconciliation system. 5 Why TETRA for BLR Typical airport environment for radio: Dedicated area ( within the campus and mainly airport operational areas) Activities mainly concentrated around the airport terminal building Apron/runway Many users Airlines Ground handlers and Cargo handlers Refueling companies Flight caterers Security Immigration, Customs Many more Many conversations per user Creates a situation where the call traffic loading is very high in a very small geographical area. 6 Why TETRA for BLR Spectrum and number of frequencies - limitations are there and WPC (Wireless Planning & Coordination) wing of the Ministry of Communications allocates the same on case to base based on need. Requirement for spectrum efficient radio technology with provision for data capability for future airport applications. Total of 18 Voice Channels and 2 Signaling channels 82 Talk Groups and approx 1000 Radio users TETRA is the most suitable Slide 6

17 Challenges & lessons learnt User requirements Very important for the system provider to understand the customer requirements Redundancy and resilience Critical for airport operations Motorola s Dimetra IP system implemented with redundancy at MSO and base station Manufacturer s local support is an advantage Important to have TETRA manufacturer local/regional support crucial for sustained airport operations. Project team that understood the local conditions Project implemented in fast and professional manner Opening day jitters Motorola was on hand to help BIAL deal with any issues from Day 1 with on-site resource Post-implementation support Training Detailed O&M and user training to increase user confidence Slide 17

18 Next steps Grouping by flight. Radio user has to send SDS (Short Data-Text Messaging) to join a Flight talk-group Greater efficiency in using Frequency spectrum Grouping is dynamic All Airlines departments needing to join a talk group can join Others who can join Caterers catering to that flight. Ground Handlers Aircraft Fuelers / Oil Companies Airport Departments, etc Exploring possible data applications on TETRA to improve airport operations. greater efficiency Sharp increase in the number of airline and airport service providers wanting to use the radio service need to expand the TETRA system further Slide 18
