1. Safety instructions Counters of the series signo 721 are built and tested in accordance with VDE 0411, part 1 - Protection measures for electronic measuring instruments - and have left the manufacturer in a safe and proper condition. In order to maintain this condition and to ensure safe operation, the user must observe the instructions and warnings provided in these operating instructions. Counters may only be operated when built in! The counters should be supplied with the operating voltages 12-24V and 24V from an SELV - source (see EN point 2.3) because there is no electrical insulation between the power supply and the electronic inputs/outputs! The counters may only be opened by trained personnel for settings. The counter must be isolated from the supply before opening the program switch cover. The plug-in terminals may only be operated it isolated from the supply. The identification numbers of the plug-in terminals and of the corresponding socket strip must be observed. Unassigned terminals () must not be connected! Connection terminals are to be protected by installation! In order to ensure hand contact safety of the connection terminals, live wires must be connected properly. If safe operation can no longer be ensured, the counter must be disabled and secured against accidental operation. The counter power supply is protected by a PTC resistor. In case of power supply overload the supply is switched off and automatically switched on again after cooling. 2. Block Diagram The heart of the signo 721 is a specially developed IC incorporating ultra-modern technology.the illustration below shows the functional structure. Figure 2 Indicators and display Counting inputs Control inputs Mains connection mp Control outputs Sensor/ Transmitter supply In-line switches and potentiometer Keypad 2.1 Display The large LED display is subdivided into 2 lines. Figure 3. 1-preset version HENGSTLER signo preset version HENGSTLER signo 721 Line 1 P COR PSC Line 2 P1 P2 COR PSC Line 1 provides a 5-digit, 7 mm high, high-intensity digital display, displaying the current count value. The preset values, the prescaler value and the correction value are displayed when programming. 2

Line 2 displays the programme step selected, by means of LED indicators, when programming. This applies both to scanning whatever value is programmed In the counter and to programming new values. 3. Keypad 4 large keys are provided for entering of parameters and resetting of the counter. Figure 4. E R E This key provides access to all numerical values. Programmed values can be scanned and also changed. This key functions only in programming mode, provided one of the selected indicators in line 2 is lit. It is used to select the position to be changed. This key has two functions 1. In programming mode, it is used to set the value for the relevant, selected position when entering numerical values. 2. This key must be pressed together with the R key in order to reset the counter via the keypad. R This key must be pressed together with the value (see 6.2 reset). key in order to manually reset the counter to its initial 4. Data storage If the power supply is interrupted, all count values and preset parameters are stored in NV RAM (without requiring battery support) for at least 10 years. The stored data is displayed again when the power is restored. 5. Programming The various programming options are subdivided into 2 control levels, in line with practical requirements. Control level 1 provides the user with access to the numerical values which may have to be changed frequently. The preset values and the prescaler can be protected against unauthorised reprogramming via keylock control input terminal 14 and correct positioning of control level 2 switches (see point 6.4). The system or machine-specific parameters are programmed in control level 2. This is generally required only when installing the system or when changing systems or machines. 5.1 Control level 1 The illustration below shows the sequence of the programming options. If you briefly press the E key, you are guided step by step through this menu. Each programme step is indicated by means of a corresponding LED indicator in line 2. You always enter the menu at P or P1. The numbers are changed digit by digit with the 2 cursor keys and If neither of the 2 keys or are pressed within 5 seconds after pressing the E key, you automatically quit control level 1 and the current count is displayed. Newly entered values are activated by acknowledging with the E key or automatically, 5 seconds after a cursor key has been last pressed. 3

Note: Correction function COR may be disabled (see 5.2.4). If this bypass procedure is set, control level 1 menu steps directly from P (or P2) to PSC. Figure 5 PSC Prescaler COR P2 P P Preset value 1 P1 (2-preset version) If preset value 1 and the count coincide - this having been achieved by counting pulses and not by correction - OUT 1 responds. If preset value 1 is to be used as a warning signal, e.g. in the case of auto reset (see point 5.2.5) it must be set lower than preset value Preset value P (1-preset version) or 2 P2 (2-preset version) Note: If the preset value and the count coincide - this having been achieved by counting pulses and not by correction - OUT or OUT 2 responds. This output relay may be programmed to provide a seconds pulse (monostable signal) or to latch (bistable signal), (see Point 5.2.8). In 2 - preset versions, preset value 2 is the main preset with which auto-reset is controlled in the counter (see point 5.2.5) Correction COR The count display in line 1 can be corrected, or adjusted to any value, in the 'correction' programme step. Note: If the display is set to a value equal to one of the preset values (coincidence), no output signal occurs. PSC Prescaler - pulse weighting factor The prescaler is an adjustable multiplier by which pulses supplied to the counter can be converted to engineering units and displayed. It can be set in the range The signo 721 has a special feature: A pulse output in parallel with the display (see point 7.2). 4

Example: A flowmeter provides an output of 173 pulses per 100 litres. The actual flow quantity in litres is required, to be displayed, in preference to the pulses generated. The following formula applies for conversion to engineering units (in this case litres): or Number of pulses x prescaler value = required display reading Required display reading prescaler value (PSC) = Number of pulses 100 The following applies to the above example:psc = = The prescaler is set with the cursor keys and, as described in points 5.1 and 5.2. Other typical applications requiring prescalers: Compensation for worn meter rollers Conversion to units measurement, e.g. metric measurement system to inch display. Recording multiple panels, e.g. simultaneous punching of 6 parts. Mode of operation of the prescaler Every pulse registered at the counting input is multiplied by the set weighting factor. Only integers are displayed - the remainder is added to the next pulse. Note: The residual value is not stored if the power supply is disconnected! Examples A weighting factor of is programmed, i.e. display value = 1.3 x number of pulses. Since the display indicates only integers, the numerical sequence shown below is displayed. Pulses registered Computed result Display value If the weight factor is <1, this produces the following numerical sequence Important: If the prescaler value is >1, the product of the max. counting frequency x prescaler may not be greater than Prescaler x counting frequency max ²5000 Pulses registered Computed result Display value

5.2 Control level 2 The system or machine-specific parameters are programmed in control level 2 using DIL switches. The 9 switches and potentiometer, for setting the switching time of the main signal, are located on the side of the counter behind the detachable cover. The illustration below shows the switch configuration for subsequent counter programming. Figure 6. For low potential, link to terminal 9. For high potential, link to terminal With/without auto reset - switch 6 With auto reset on, the count value automatically resets to 0 or to the preset value, P or P2 (2 preset counter), when the count is complete. At this point, the output relay (OUT or OUT 2) will pulse for a set period or latch (see point 5.2.8). With auto reset off, the output relay (OUT or OUT 2) will pulse for a set period or latch (see point 5.2.8) upon completion of the count. The counter will continue to register and display counts until a reset signal is received Reset/set mode - switch 9 With auto reset on, the counter value automatically resets to zero or to the reset value. Reset mode The count value is reset to 0 when the preset value, P or P2 (2 preset counter), is reached. In this mode, the counter must be configured for addition (see point 6.3). Set mode The count value is reset to the preset value, P or P2 (2 preset counter), when 0 is reached. In this mode, the counter must be configured for subtraction (see point 6.3) Counting frequency - switch 4 The counting input (see point 6.1) can be switched over for electronic pulse transducers up to max. 5kHz or mechanical pulse transmitters up to max. 30Hz Signal duration OUT or OUT2 - potentiometer OUT2 can be set by means of a potentiometer as a monostable signal or as a bistable signal. The monostable time can be set in the range from approx sec. to approx. 1 sec. and reverts to bistable signal duration if the potentiometer is rotated to full clockwise position. 6. Control logic 6.1 Counting input - terminal 11 The counting input is controlled with a high-active edge or low active edge depending on the setting of switch 1. The max. counting frequency is 5kHz. Any commercially available electronic pulse transducers with PNP or NPN outputs, with a switching level less than 2V and greater than 8V can be used. Maximum amplitude 40V. 7

6.2 Reset If the power supply is applied, the counter can be reset to its initial count at any time. This can be carried out by: Simultaneously pressing keys and R Setting the operating mode with auto reset (see point 5.2.5) Applying high potential to the reset control input (terminal 12) depending on the setting of switch 9. Each of these 3 reset methods resets the display. This is determined by the programmed operating mode (see point 5.2.6) Note: The reset behaviour of the counter is static, i.e. incoming pulses are not counted as long as keys and R are pressed or as long as the reset control input is activated. Auto reset occurs even with maximum pulse frequency (5kHz) without pulse loss regardless of the set signal duration (see point 5.2.8). The output relays are reset by external reset or the reset keys. Residual values not displayed, resulting from multiplication by the prescaler, are reset each time. 6.3 Application input (appl) - terminal 13 The application input, for this range of counters, is used to control count direction. It may be used in conjunction with switch 9 (see point 5.2.6). The counting direction is controlled by applying either a low or high potential to this input terminal. If a low potential is applied, e.g. by linking to terminal 9, the counter subtracts the incoming pulses at terminal 11. If a high potential is applied, e.g. by linking to terminal 10, the counter adds the incoming pulses at terminal 11. Note: This type of up/down counting is not the same as when operating with a phase discriminator (quadrature) since so-called vibration pulses are registered. 6.4 Keylock input (appl) - terminal 14 The keylock input is used to prevent unauthorised persons having access to control level 1 via the front keypad. This input is used in conjunction with switches 6 and 7 (see point 5.2.4). 7. Outputs 7.1 Control outputs OUT (1 preset counter) is assigned to preset value P. This relay has a single pole, voltfree, changeover contact. The output is on terminals 6 (N/C), 7 (common) and 9 (N/O). The relay may be set to provide a pulse output, in the range 0.05 to 1 second (monostable), or to latch (bistable). See point OUT 1 and OUT2 (2 preset counters) are assigned to the corresponding preset values P1 and P2. These relays have single pole, volt-free, normally open contacts. The outputs are on terminals 4 and 5 (OUT 1) or 7 and 8 (OUT 2). OUT 1 is always bistable and resets when preset value P2 is reached (see point 6.2). OUT 2 may be set to provide a pulse output, in the range 0.05 to 1 seconds (monostable), or to latch (bistable). See point

All relays have a transient suppression circuit to protect against harmful voltage peaks. The outputs cannot be activated using keypad entries, they respond only if coincidence of preset value and count is reached as the result of counting input pulses. Note: Output signals, which were currently active at the time of a power loss, are not reactivated when the power supply is restored. 7.2 Prescaler output (PSC-OUT) The prescaler output (terminal 15) is an electronic output whose pulse train = the pulses converted on the display. This permits simple totalising counters, which do not have a prescaler to be included as secondary displays. With respect to the example in point 5.1.4, these pulses could be switched directly to an additional totalising counter in order to record the litres discharged. Note: The product of prescaler value x max. counting frequency must not be greater than 5400! Prescaler x counting frequency max.² Power supplies The counters need power supply to operate. Units are available for use on a.c. or d.c. and may be used on a supply within the range (see 'technical specification' for supply tolerances). An auxiliary power supply is available for powering sensors or transducers. 8.1 Input voltages Two ranges are available V V 8.2 Sensor/transducer power supply A power supply is available for powering sensors or transducers used with the counter. This supply is regulated for a.c. units. The voltage and maximum current available is listed in the technical specification. In order to mount the unit merely slide the spring-loaded snap-mount frame (see illustration point 12) from the rear over the counter body and fix it in position with the 2 screws. Attention! Check that all corresponding equipment is 'dead' during the installation of the counter and secure the equipment against accidental activation during installation! Installation is to be executed in accordance with applicable safety regulations and may only be carried out by trained personnel! DANGER Operating and connected voltages may be up to V! 12. Dimension drawings Figure Spring-loaded, snap-mount frame Plugable terminal blocks Environmental protection class The signo 721 is designed to provide IP54 protection in accordance with standards IEC 529, B.S. 5490, DIN and NFC These standards specify the level of ingress protection for dust and water. The level of protection is dependent on the unit being properly installed in a panel with cut-out dimensions 45mm x 45mm -0/+0.6mm (tolerances in accordance with table 1 of the German specification DIN for the 48 x 48 case). A rubber gasket is provided to ensure a tight seal. To improve this level of protection, a clear polycarbonate protective cover is available for fitting over the counter. The cover has a lift-up door for access to the controls and is available in two versions: RS stock no. Method of door fixing Self-retaining rotary knob Cylinder lock, 1 key of common profile. The cover is secured to the panel via 2 x 4mm screws (F.C. 63mm vertical) and will increase the rating upto IP65. This rating is a common requirement in industries such as food factories, chemical plants, etc. The cover is supplied with a synthetic rubber seal. 14. Commissioning the unit Before putting the unit into operation please check the following points: Does the supply voltage correspond to the voltage specified on the counter? Is the supply voltage connected to the correct terminals and in the case of d.c. power supply does it have the correct polarity? 11
