Nikhef jamboree - Groningen 12 December 2016 Atlas upgrade Hella Snoek for the Atlas group 1
2 LHC timeline Luminosity increases till 2026 to 5-7 times with respect to current lumi Detectors need adjustments to keep with higher radiation and data rates phase 1 (2020) phase 2 (2025) luminosity lumi phase 0 phase 1 phase 2 30 fb fb fb fb -1
3 Atlas timeline phase 1: detector operations beyond design lumi muon new small wheel, TDAQ upgrade phase 2: detector ready for HL-LHC replacement of full inner tracker, readout electronics, major trigger upgrade (100 khz 1MHz) Main issues to address: high data rates, occupancies, and radiation levels. While maintain efficient trigger. luminosity lumi phase 0 phase 1 phase 2 30 fb fb fb fb -1
Atlas detector 4
Atlas detector 5
6 Atlas detector NSW ITK
muon topo trigger MuCTPiToTopo developed at Nikhef Saves the low pt muon pair trigger for run 2. extremely important for Bs µµ, Higgs and tau physics reduces muon rate by factor 4 phase 0 7
phase 1 8 Muon new small wheel NSW Precision tracker and trigger detectors, micromegas with mini-mdt s Improves fraction of reconstructable muons in endcap Trigger efficiency (factor 8-9 better). Now triggers on A,B,C with NSW only A
phase 1 9 Flexible atlas readout Replaces RODs with more flexible (configurable) system. Better maintainable: - apart from FPGA PCIe commercial components - reduced firmware software Now Future Felix handles event data, timing and trigger control. Installation in phase 1: NSW and L1 trigger upgrade (2020) phase 2: Full Atlas detector (2026)
Felix Design Review November 2016 Final design review planned April 2017 Several workshops organised Nikhef, BNL, Weizmann, Argon very successful BNL-711 board Felix workshop Nov 2016 phase 1 10
Test setup at Nikhef Nov
ITk upgrade - phase 2 Current tracker HL-LHC 5x nominal luminosity Current tracker will have to be upgraded TRT will have 100% occupancy current detector designed for 300 fb -1 radiation damaged at 600 fb -1 readout links occupancies will cause dead time. tracking information needed for L1 trigger Full inner tracker will be replaced All silicon pixel and strip detector. To be installed 2024 Nikhef will play major role in construction phase 2 12
13 ITk upgrade - phase 2 ITk Strip Technical Design Report almost public. Pixel TDR mid 2017 Pixel design extended barrel or inclined ring design. Strips, four barrel layers with staves, 6 endcap disks with petals Nikhef involved in Simulation and layout studies Mechanics design and production: support structures, services Sensor characterisation Module readout and test stand setup Participating in RD53 chip design
phase 2 14 ITk Strip Endcap Each endcap has 6 disks One disk has 32 petals with silicon modules (6 types for full coverage) Single sided n-on-p sensors pitch ~75µm Nikhef will make carbon mechanical support structure for both endcaps Plan to fully dress one endcap at Nikhef
phase 2 15 ITk Endcap global support Close collaboration for design of the global support Nikhef, Valencia and DESY. Design accepted by the collaboration first mock up. Two wheels with rods. Nikhef will build structure for both end caps
ITk strip endcap assembly Nikhef will dress one endcap with (already assembled) petals. DESY will dress the other. Current DAQ setup needs huge transformation to perform petal (200), service modules, cables and fibres reception tests Major operation. Testing, storing, mounting, metrology, cooling, services, testing, shipping. Current DAQ setup, silicon alley phase 2 16
17 ITk timeline Nikhef end of chain. We need to be prepared! 2019 start production of global support 2020 start dressing 2017 start of setup lab spaces
ITk - RD53 RD53 common CMS and Atlas effort to design components of the future readout chip for pixel detector. First RD53a chip planned summer 2017 Nikhef designed 5Gbs serialiser (in 65 nm technology) p-substrate transistor structures contact areas vias and oxide layers 5Gbs serialiser phase 2 18
19 Conclusions Atlas upgrade activities going strong at Nikhef.
