This paper presents a compact planar triband bandstop filter (TBBSF) with compact size and high selectivity. The structure of the filter incorporates two folded trisection stepped-impedance resonators (TSSIRs). One of these resonators is designed to operate at the first and third center frequencies and the other resonator is designed to operate at the second center frequency of the proposed filter. To achieve a compact size filter, alternating impedance lines of the resonators are folded widthwise and also one resonator is embedded within another. Theoretical analysis and design procedures are described, including the synthesis equations for each resonator. The main advantage of the proposed method is that the filter provides flexibility to tune the second center frequency and control the corresponding bandwidth without changing the first and third stop band response. Additionally, several reflection zeros (RZs) are introduced in the pass band to improve its flatness. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed design method, both the first and second order TBBSFs were designed, simulated, and fabricated, with center frequencies of.9 GHz,. GHz, and. GHz.. Introduction There is an increasing demand for multiband bandstop filters (BSFs) in the rapidly growing modern multifunctional communication systems such as WiMax, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), and mobile communication system. The multibandbsfsusedinthemultibandtransceiversofthese systems effectively suppress the unwanted signals of different specific frequency bands. Compared to the single-band BSFs, these filters are more popular among the researchers because they can greatly reduce the circuit size and lower the cost of the product. Moreover, these filters have the additional advantages of low pass band insertion loss and minimal group delay []. Recently, researchers have been extensively investigating the use of triple-band bandstop filters (TBBSFs) [ ] in therapidlyevolvingwimaxandwlansystems.themajor design trends for these filters are compact size, high performance, and the flexibility to control the individual stop band response. Previous research has proposed several effective approaches for designing dual-band BSFs [7 ]. However, the design of a compact size TBBSF with good skirt selectivity and individually controlled stop bands still remains an ongoing challenge, which may be partially due to increased design complexities with more operation bands. Therefore, this paper mainly focuses on the design of a new-structure of a TBBSF with both compact size and sharp skirt selectivity. Additionally, the proposed work has paid more attention to add more flexibility to the control of the individual center frequency and its corresponding bandwidth, while also miniaturizing the size of the filter. The proposed structure of the TBBSF incorporates two parallel-connected trisection stepped-impedance resonators (TSSIRs) shunt-connected to a planar transmission line. One of these resonators creates the first and third stop band and the other inserts an individually controllable second stop band between them. To improve the selectivity of the filter, this paper also describes the second-order TBBSF, which is formed by replicating the similar combination of two TSSIRs with the same planar transmission line at a certain electrical separation from the first. The second-order filter exhibits both improved insertion losses and return losses, but at a price of an increase in the circuit size. Additionally, four open-end impedance lines, which are associated with the structure of the filter, include

The designed second-order filter operates at.9 GHz,. GHz, and. GHz with corresponding bandwidths of 8.%,.%, and 9.%, respectively, and can be a very good candidate for application in GSM-9, WiMax,andWLANsystems.. Design and Theoretical Analysis A TSSIR has alternating sections of very high and very low impedance lines. As a result, the resonator can support 9 simultaneously at multiple resonant frequencies and is very suitable for the realization of compact multiband BSFs [7 9]. However, if a single TSSIR is used to realize a TBBSF, three stop bands with a wide range of possible frequency gaps and possible bandwidths are very difficult to achieve because the change in electrical length or impedance of any section of such resonator causes change in more than one stop band response. Therefore, the use of two TSSIRs for realizing TBBSF is proposed in this work. One of these TSSIRs creates the first and the third stop bands with a wide gap and the other TSSIRisusedtoinsertthetunablesecondstopbandbetween them... Configuration of the TSSIR and the TBBSF. The configuration of the general TSSIR is shown in Figure (a) and theproposedtssir a with characteristic impedances and electrical lengths of (Z a, a ), (Z a, a ), and (a, a )are shown in Figure (b). TSSIR a resonates at the first and third center frequencies of the proposed filter. Figure (c) shows another proposed TSSIR b with characteristic impedances and electrical lengths of (Z b, b ), (Z b, b ), and (b, b )and it resonates at the second center frequency of the proposed filter. Figure (a) shows the proposed TBBSF with order N=. To realize this filter, TSSIR a is first shunt-connected with aω planar transmission line. TSSIR b is then embedded within TSSIR a inawayasshowninthefigurethatitdoes not increase the original circuit size of the filter. Figure (b) models the equivalent circuit of Figure (a) using three series LC resonators connected in parallel. The resonators L f C f, L s C s,andl t C t resonate at the first, second, and third center frequencies denoted by ω f, ω s,andω t, respectively. When

3 The Scientific World Journal the series resonator L f C f resonates at ω f, the input signal is shorted to ground, while series resonators L s C s and L t C t behave as an open circuit and have no influence on the input signal. A similar operation occurs when the resonators L s C s and L t C t resonate at ω s and ω t,respectively,andthusthe circuit acts as TBBSF. To improve the skirt selectivity of the filter, its order is increased to N=by replicating the shunt connection of the similar combination of two TSSIRs at a separation of with the same transmission line, as shown in Figure (a). Figure (b) models the equivalent circuit of Figure (a) using all-shunt-connected series LC resonators and an admittance inverter (J inverter). Now, both of the L f C f resonators, shown by the dotted blocks in Figure (b), resonateatω f, with the input signal shorted and opened, to form a stop band with a higher return loss. Similarly, the second and third stop bands with improved return losses are obtained using pair of series resonators L s C s and L t C t,respectively.basedonthefrequencymapping[] from the low-pass prototype to the bandstop, the LC elements can be determined using L i = /ω i g Δ i, C i = g Δ i /ω i (for LC elements on the left side of the J inverter) and L i = g Δ i /ω i, C i =/ω i g Δ i (for LC elements on the right side of thej inverter). Here, the subscript i represents for the letters f, s,andt,whichdenotethefirst,second,andthethirdband, respectively, Δ f, Δ s,andδ t representing the corresponding bandwidths of the first, second, and third band, respectively, and g (=.) and g (=.) are the element values of the low-pass filter prototype. For the proposed TBBSF with center frequencies of.9 GHz,. GHz, and. GHz and corresponding fractional bandwidths of %, %, and %, respectively, the values of equivalent circuit components are L f =.88 nh, L s =. nh, L t =.9 nh, C f =. pf, C s =. pf, C t =. pf, L f =. nh, L s =. nh, L t =. nh, C f =.9 pf, C s =.8 pf, and C t =. pf. The input impedance Z TSSIR of a generalized trisection SIR can be expressed as Z TSSIR =j (tan (Z / ) ((Z / ) cot (Z / ) tan ) ) ((Z / )+(Z / ) cot tan ) ( +(Z / ) tan ((Z / ) cot (Z / ) tan ) ). ((Z / )+(Z / ) cot tan ) () The impedance of the parallel-serial LC resonator Z c in either Figures (b) or (b) canbederivedas Z c = j L f L s L t (ω ω f )(ω ω s )(ω ω t ), ω D D= [ω f L s L t C f (ω ω s )(ω ω t ) +ω s L f C s L t (ω ω t )(ω ω f ) +ω t L s L f C t (ω ω f )(ω ω s )], which does not take g into account. ().. Synthesis Equations and Analysis of Resonator Characteristics. The proposed TSSIR and its equivalent circuit should have the same reactance slope parameter, x=ω i / dx/dω ω i []toobtaintherequiredbandwidths.thus,theresonant condition Z TSSIR = and the reactance slope parameter at the two resonant frequencies can be used to obtain four simultaneous equations, which are given by tan = Z (Z / ) cot (Z / ) tan (Z / )+(Z / ) cot tan, tan (r f ) = Z (Z / ) cot (r f ) (Z / ) tan (r f ) (Z / )+(Z / ) cot (r f ) tan (r f ), (. sec A) ([( Z )+( Z )(tan +( Z ) tan ) (a) (b) cot ( Z ) tan Z tan ] ) =, g Δ f (. r f sec (r f )B) ({( Z )+( Z )[tan (r f )+( Z ) tan (r f )]cot (r f ) ( Z ) tan (r Z f ) tan (r f )} ) =, g Δ s A= Z [( Z ) Z + Z Z Z + Z ] cot tan + Z Z [ ( Z ) ] cot tan + Z Z ( Z Z + Z Z + Z Z ) cot +( Z ) [ Z Z + Z Z +( Z ) ] tan +( Z ) ( Z Z + Z Z + ), B= Z [( Z ) Z + Z Z Z + Z ] cot (r f ) tan (r f )+ Z Z (c) (d)

To determine six design parameters (Z, Z,,,,and ) of TSSIR using four simultaneous equations (a), (b), (c), and (d), Z / and Z / are taken as degrees of freedom. However, the resonant frequencies and associated bandwidths of the TSSIR realized with these parameters differ slightly from expected values, because they change with the variations in Z / and Z /. Therefore, the design parameters obtained by solving (a), (b), (c), and (d) are optimized with the help of full wave EM simulator to get the expected results. IntheproposedTBBSF,TSSIR a is used to realize the first and the third stop bands. To achieve these stop bands, the design parameters Z a, Z a, a, a, a,and a must be determined for the desired ω f and ω t and the corresponding bandwidths Δ f and Δ t,respectively.however, onlyfour simultaneous equations (a), (b), (c), and (d)areavailable. Therefore, the impedance ratios Z a /a and Z a /a are used as degrees of freedom. However, when Z a /a =, TSSIR a becomes a two-sectioned SIR. Therefore, Z a /a is varied from. to.8 (taking the structure of the proposed filter and the practical value of Z high = Ω and Z low = Ω into account) for Z a /a =. (<),.77 (<), and. (>) for the parametric study of the design parameters of the TSSIR a. The remaining four parameters a, a, a,and a canbeobtainedbysolvingtheavailablefour () simultaneous equations by using a root-searching program. Additionally, the resonator behavior is much guided by openend impedance line and, therefore, the aforementioned range of Z a /a is obtained by varying Z a at a fixed a.theopenend line of TSSIR acts as equivalent inductor or capacitor depending upon the value of a relative to a.if a > a, the change in Z a causes more effective changes in L f and L t compared to C f and C t. Therefore, the changes in only L f and L t are considered to describe the change in the first and third stop band response of the TBBSF. However, the change in Z a causes more effective changes in C f and C t compared to L f and L t,providedthat a < a. Therefore, the changes in only C f and C t are considered to describe thechangeinstopbandresponseoftheproposedfilter for this case. The variation of r f for the varied impedance ratios is shown in Figure, whichindicatesthatr f can be varied within a maximum range from. to.8 when Z a /a =.77. To carry out the further analysis of the proposed TSSIR a, Z a /a is, therefore, maintained at.77. The proposed structure of the filter requires higher value of a for allowing TSSIR b to be embedded within TSSIR a, which must be maintained while determining the design parameters for TSSIR a.however, highervalueof a causes TSSIR a to be more inductive than capacitive, and, therefore, changes in Z a /a result in more effective changes in L f and L t (from the equivalent circuit in Figure (a))compared to C f and C t. Figure plotsthecenterfrequenciesofthe filter for the variations in Z a /a and shows that f f and f t increase and decrease, respectively, with increase in Z a /a. Thus, r f decreases with an increase in Z a /a.thisresult is explained more clearly with the help of equivalent shuntconnected series LC circuit shown in Figure(b). Fora shunt-connected series LC circuit, resonance frequency and corresponding db bandwidth can be, respectively, expressed as f = π(lc), / () Δf db = Z πl =π f Z C. ()

Therefore, the increase and decrease in f f and f t are expected according to () because of respective decrease and increase in L f and L t with an increase in Z a /a. Figure also plots the changes in the bandwidths for different stop bands with changes in Z a /a.thebw f and BW t increase and decrease according to (), respectively, because increase in Z a /a causes respective decrease and increase in L f and L t.however,bw s remains almost unchanged. IntheproposedTBBSF,TSSIR b,whichintroducesthe second stop band in the response of the filter, is shunted db bandwidth (GHz) to the a of TSSIR a to share the same impedance section. If a uniform impedance resonator (UIR) is used to replace TSSIR b to simplify the design and analysis of the TBBSF, the necessary condition of b = a always results in single value of b.evenifz b = Z b =Z b is used, it becomes two-section SIR. However, UIR with a fixed impedance value cannot be used to control the bandwidth of second stop band effectively. Therefore, the use of TSSIR b is preferred to realize the second stop band instead of UIR. Additionally, TSSIR b canalsobeusedasuirwithallimpedancesections having equal characteristic impedance. For analyzing TSSIR b, Z b /b and Z b /b are used as degrees of freedom. Z b /b is varied from. to.8 for Z b /b =.77 for a predetermined b and a fixed b.theremainingtwo parameters b and b canbeobtainedbysolving(a) and (c). The proposed structure of the filter causes lower value of b, which must be maintained while determining the design parameters for TSSIR b.asaresult, b can be shorter than b for the proposed TSSIR b. Figure plots the center frequencies of the TBBSF with the variation in Z b /b,whichindicates that f s increases with an increase in Z b /b. This behavior is expected, because C s (from the equivalent circuit) increases with an increase in Z b /b.however,f f and f t remain unaffected with an increase in Z b /b. Figure, whichalso plots the variations in the bandwidth for different stop bands with the changes in Z b /b, indicates that BW f and BW t remainalmostthesame, whilebw s decreases rapidly with an increase in Z b /b. To control the second stop band response of the proposed TBBSF, b can be varied from. to 7.9 (calculated at ω f ) for Z b /b =. and Z b /b =.77. This capability is one of the main advantages of the proposed filter structure, because b canbevariedintheprestatedrangeofvalues

By using the proposed design method, a filter was designed to operate at the center frequencies of.9 GHz,. GHz, and. For this, TSSIR a shunt-connected to a Ω planar transmission line with optimized design parameters Z a = 8.7 Ω, Z a =. Ω, a = 9. The design parameters for both TSSIRs were evaluatedat.9ghz.thedesignedtssir a and TSSIR b were combined together to obtain a TBBSF of N=and N= as shown in Figures (a) and (a), respectively. The electrical length of the simplified admittance inverter between the TSSIRs for the second order filter can be calculated using =nπ/(r f +)[7], where n =,,..., yielding =.. The bandwidths for different stop bands of TBBSF depend much on and, therefore, it was optimized by the simulator

The approximate difference of.8 mm appears, because the electrical lengths are calculated neglecting the bending losses at two bends of. mm wide open-end lines of TSSIR a and TSSIR b. The designed filters were simulated using a full-wave EM simulator, Sonnet, and the simulated results of both filters are shown in Figure 9.Theobservation of simulation results depicts that the first order TBBSF has center frequencies of.9 GHz,. Additionally, this filter has sharper transition caused by seven reflection zeros introduced in the pass band at. GHz,. GHz,.8 GHz,. Implementation and Measurement To validate the proposed design concept, the designed TBB- SFs of both the first and second order were fabricated on a Teflon substrate with dielectric constant (ε r ) =., thickness (h) =. mm, and a loss tangent of.. The fabricated filters were then measured using an Agilent 8C VNA instrument. Figures and show the simulated andmeasuredresponsesofthetbbsfoffirstandsecond order, respectively, which indicate that both responses have good agreement between the simulation results and the measurements. The center frequencies of the first order filter were measured to be f f =.9 GHz, f s =. GHz, and f t =. GHz, with respective fractional bandwidths of.7%, 7.9%, and.%. The center frequencies of the second order filter were measured to be f f =.9 GHz, f s =.GHz, and f t =. GHz, with respective fractional bandwidths.%, 8.%, and 8.%. The slight deviation observed inthemeasuredresultscomparedtosimulatedresultswas attributed to the dielectric substrate loss and the unexpected tolerances in the fabrication and soldering of the ports, which were not modeled during the simulation of the proposed filter [8, 9]. Additionally, an admittance (J) inverter is an ideal inverter with an electrical length of 9 at all frequencies. However, a homogeneous transmission line of fixed length ( ) cannot act as ideal J inverter at all three stop bands f s f t

Conclusions This paper described TBBSFs based on folded TSSIRs, whose characteristics are well investigated in terms of varying of the impedance ratios and changing the electrical length with the help of both mathematical relationships and simulation results for designing TBBSFs.
