1 FIBER OPTIC ANTENNA LINK OFW-5800/GPS Compatible with a Wide Range of GPS Receivers Architectures Designed to Operate within the Naval Electromagnetic Environment Designed and Manufactured to Meet Naval Environmental Specifications Logistically Supported with COTS Hardware Custom Configurations Available The OFW /GPS is a Next Generation Global Positioning System (GPS) Fiber Optic Antenna Link (FOAL) subsystem that is a designed to operate in the Naval shipboard environment. The OFW /GPS FOAL subsystem consists of four independent RF to Fiber antenna headend units, that can be strategically located throughout the topside superstructure and antenna mast areas, and a four (4) channel Fiber Optic (FO) to RF receiver unit, that can be located in the below deck navigation space (IC/GYRO Room). The headend units and the receiver module are interconnected using shipboard fiber optic cable and Mil Spec fiber optic connectors. The OFW /GPS enables the naval combat systems engineer to take advantage of the unique properties offered by optical fiber technology. These properties include extremely low signal loss, ultra-wide bandwidth, immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), immunity to electromagnetic pulse, increased channel capacity for a given cable cross sectional area, and decreased cable weight per unit length. The application of this technology to communications, navigation, and identification (CNI) systems allows for the development of innovative shipboard architectures not possible with conventional RF/Microwave systems.

3 Technical Description The OFW /GPS is a Global Positioning System (GPS) Fiber Optic Antenna Link (FOAL) subsystem that is designed to operate in the Naval shipboard environment. The FOAL subsystem is compatible with all types of Naval shipboard GPS receivers. The FOAL subsystem can support both single, dual and quad antenna architectures. When configured for multi antenna operation the OFW /GPS can employ up to four topside mounted antennas that can be strategically located throughout the ship s superstructure and antenna mast areas. Specifically, the OFW /GPS-4 consists of a quad antenna architecture that employs four RF to Fiber Antenna Units (MP-A-5800TX) that are each interconnected to an integrated four channel FO to RF Receiver Unit (MP-4R-5800RX) using shipboard singlemode fiber optic cables. The FO Receiver is typically colocated below deck with the GPS navigation equipment. The Antenna Units are capable of receiving GPS downlink signals from an aftermarket Fix Reception Pattern Antenna (FRPA) and each consist of a Diplex Filter / Low Noise Amplifier (LNA), an electro-optic (EO) transducer, and an AC to DC power supply. Functionally, the GPS downlink signals are fed from the FRPA to the LNA, for filtering and amplification. The amplified output of the LNA then drives the input of the EO transducer. The EO transducer generates an optical signal at a wavelength of 1310 nms. Information transfer is accomplished by directly modulating the transducer s DC bias point with the RF output of the LNA, to produce an intensity modulated optical signal. The optical signal is routed to the exterior of the Antenna Unit through a Mil-C single-mode optical connector that is compatible with naval shipboard optical cable. The optical output from the Antenna Module is sent to the FO Receiver Unit using a shipboard optical cable. In addition, each Antenna Unit transmits a BIT Fault Status signal to the FO Receiver Chassis that is then made available to the User s Monitoring & Control Subsystem using an Ethernet connection. The FO Receiver Unit is a plug-in style 2RU rack chassis and is typically located below deck within the GPS navigation equipment rack. The Receiver consists of up to four (hot swappable) FO to RF plug-in converters, dual redundant power supplies, and a Ethernet based Monitoring and Control interface. Each FO to RF converter contains an analog photodiode detector, RF post amplifier, and a digital controlled RF attenuator. The optical signals from all of the topside antennas enter the navigation equipment rack and are passed to the ir respective converter through a fiber optic connector, which is located on the back panel of each plug-in. The Receiver Unit, when operated in the quad antenna configuration, simultaneuosly converters all four GPS optical signals back to the RF domain and outputs each signal to a designated GPS receiver module. The GPS receiver modules can then process the signals for use by the ship s navigation and landing systems. The Receiver Unit provides the User with capability to continuously monitor the operational health status of all Antenna Uniti and Receiver subsystem functions using an either an Ethernet connection. In addition, the Receiver Unit provides front panel LED indicators for local fault indications.
