Lab 1: Introduction to Laboratory Equipment ReadMeFirst Lab Summary This is the introduction to laboratory equipment and cables. The equipment covered includes the oscilloscope, function generator, power supply, and digital multi-meter. In order to complete today's lab, at least one team member will need to have an ECE 2020 Lab kit in their possession. Everyone enrolled in ECE 2020 should also have a temporary ECE departmental account. At least one team member must be able to log onto computer located at your lab bench in order to complete today's lab. Audio splitters are available at the Lab Monitor's desk (but not earphones) to allow all team members to watch the video without interference from other groups. Lab Supplies You will need the following supplies from the cable cabinet for today's lab. 1 BNC cable 1 Red Banana-to-Banana cable 1 Black Banana-to-Banana cable 1 Red Banana-to-Minigrabber cable 1 Black Banana-to-Minigrabber cable 1 Resistor form the Lab Monitor's Desk Lab Preparation Videos: Introduction to the Lab Equipment Screencast: Introduction to Signal Terminology

Procedure Computer Login: Each student has a temporary ECE computer account for the duration of the course. To login to the laboratory computer, your username and default password are as follows: USERNAME: [last name] [.] [dot number] (Do not include the brackets) The password is the same password you use for your OSU account/ Once you are logged in, there should be an ECE 2020 link on your desktop. Clicking on the link takes you directly to the course website: u.osu.edu/ece2020labs Monitor Check Point 1: Have a Lab Monitor that your group was able to log onto the ECE server and navigate to the course website. On the website, there are videos for each lab. A Screencast file contains a PowerPoint presentation that includes all of the background and instruction material that you will need for the current lab and the quiz. The files listed under Video are demonstrations of how to perform the laboratory. For today's lab, watch the two videos listed under Lab 1, and listed in the Lab Preparation section of this document. Once you have completed the videos, complete each of the following procedures. Today's lab will use "Checkpoints" from the Lab Monitors to earn your lab grade. In subsequent labs, you may have Checkpoints, Result Sheets, or a combination of both for your lab score. There are no lab reports for ECE 2020.

Part 1 1. Connect a BNC cable from Channel 1 of the waveform generator to Channel 1 of the Oscilloscope. 2. Set the waveform generator to a 7.5 KHz Triangle wave, with a peak-to-peak amplitude of 2.00 Volts. 3. Enable the Channel 1 output on the waveform generator 4. Press the AutoScale button on the oscilloscope. 5. Press the 'Meas' button on the oscilloscope to bring up the automatic measurements. 6. If not present, add the following measurements for Channel 1 on the oscilloscope: Peak-to-peak voltage Frequency Monitor Check Point 2: Have a Lab Monitor verify the waveform and measurements on your oscilloscope.

Part 2 1. Connect a Red Banana to Minigrabber Cable to the V / input of your digital multi-meter. 2. Connect a Black Banana to Minigrabber Cable to the COM input of your digital multi-meter. 3. Set the digital multi-meter to read resistance by selecting the symbol 4. Find the 499 Kilo Ohm resistor in your Lab Kit using the color codes in the following chart. The resistors are a 5-band Code and 1% tolerance. 5. Connect the two minigrabber leads across the resistor. Monitor Check Point 3: Have a Lab Monitor verify the resistor measurement on your digital multimeter.

Part 3 1. Connect a Red Banana to Banana Cable to +25V output of the DP1308A bench top power supply. 2. Connect the other end of the Red Banana cable to the V / input of your digital multi-meter. 3. Connect a Black Banana to Banana Cable to the COM input of the power supply. 4. Connect the other end of the Black Banana cable to the COM input of your digital multi-meter. 5. Select the DC voltage measurement on your Digital Multi-meter. 6. Following the instructions from the videos, set up the positive supply for 13.5 Volts Monitor Check Point 4: Ask a Lab Monitor to verify that you are measuring the correct voltage on your digital multi-meter. Monitor Check Point 5: This is the clean-up check point. Once you have returned all supplies, powered down all equipment, logged off of the computer, and removed any debris from the bench top, ask a Lab Monitor to check your lab bench. -END of Lab-
