3 The Benefits of Interoperability Managing emergency situations at national and international level can require the involvement of many different organisations, each adopting their own procedures and communication means Of course governmental, public safety, public and aid organisations adopt the communication technology most suitable for their operational requirements and applications. In case of critical situations, cooperation among civil and military organisations is needed, with a requirement for simple fast and effective communications INTEROPERABILITY

4 Wireless Network Nodes for Interoperability WiNN terminals use SDR technology to route information through the most suitable and available communications channel Aim is to provide interoperability and integration of government networks and safety applications Switching capability for voice communications over different radio carriers Routing capability for data communications over different radio carriers Gateway between local and geographical networks Local extension towards mesh networks Connections of sensor networks to geographical networks

5 Development Project in Liguria, Italy Purpose is to investigate broadband technologies and integration of communication networks Guarantee interoperability of mobile communications systems within the emergency zone between public security and civil protection forces Establish direct contact with citizens possessing mobile phones to coordinate volunteers to raise alarms and assist in the emergency zone

6 Communication & Multi-carrier Missions Communication Carrier missions: Communication coverage extension following catastrophic events (flood, earthquakes, etc) Communications without the needed infrastructures Communications in a hostile environment Multi Carrier missions: Different types of sensors and communications equipment can be integrated to provide joint Surveillance and Communication capabilities

7 Multi-Terrain Land Vehicle Multi-terrain communications equipped vehicle; off-road, slush, crumbly terrain or mud. VHF and UHF RTx for joint (Heli/Aircraft) operations. SAT (X/Ku/Ka band) terminal. Video/ IR night operations sensors. On board intercom with wireless extension

8 Hybrid UAV Surveillance and Communication Platform Aero model classified platform integrated with TETRA terminal 5hr endurance, 1km operational flight level from take off Easily inflatable and operational in less than an hour. Low speed take off and landing on short unprepared runways Wideband radio coverage of fly over areas TETRA terminal can be used as a gateway/repeater as a connection to infrastructure network Transmission of video from onboard camera to ground station Can encompass a Wireless Network Node to allow dynamic access to different radio networks e.g. TETRA, GSM, Analogue
