4 PRECAUTIONS: READ THIS BEFORE OPERATING YOUR UNIT To ssure the finest performnce, plese red this mnul crefully. Keep it in sfe plce for future reference. This unit is equipped with the newly developed Active Servo Processing Speker System. It is not designed for use with conventionl spekers. Therefore, do not ttempt to connect other spekers thn the provided speker system. Choose the instlltion loction of this unit crefully. Avoid plcing it in direct sunlight or close to source of het. Also void loctions suject to virtion nd excessive dust, het, cold or moisture. Keep it wy from sources of hum such s trnsformers nd electric motors. Do not operte this unit upside-down. It my overhet, possily cusing dmge. Never open the cinet. If something drops into the set, contct your deler Do not plce CD or other ojects on top of this unit. Do not use force on switches, controls or connection wires. When moving the unit, first disconnect the power plug nd the wires connected to other equipment. Never pull the wire itself. Do not ttempt to clen the unit with chemicl solvents; this might dmge the finish. Use clen, dry cloth. Be sure to red the TROUBLESHOOTING section regrding common operting errors efore concluding tht the unit is fulty. To prevent lightning dmge, disconnect the AC power plug nd disconnect the ntenn cle when there is n electricl storm. Do not plug the AC power plug to the wll socket efore you finish ll connections. Never llow metllic items (e.g. screwdrivers, tools, etc.) to come ner the cssette deck s record/plyck hed ssemly in this unit. Doing so my not only scrtch or dmge the hed s mirrorsmooth finish, it my chnge the mgnetic chrcteristics of the heds, cusing deteriortion in reproduction performnce qulity. Although the cssette deck s record/plyck heds used in this unit re high qulity heds with outstnding reproduction chrcteristics, they cn ecome dirty through the use of old tpes or from dust ccumultion over time. This cn hve serious effect on reproduction qulity. Clen the heds regulrly with one of the commonly ville hed cleners or with clening solutions. The voltge to e used must e the sme s tht specified on this unit. Using this product with higher voltge thn tht which is specified is dngerous nd my result in fire or other type of ccident cusing dmge. YAMAHA will not e held responsile for ny dmge resulting from use of this unit with voltge other thn tht which is specified. Sudden temperture chnges nd storge or opertion in n extremely humid environment my cuse condenstion inside the cinet. Condenstion cn cuse the unit to mlfunction. Follow the procedure elow to eliminte condenstion. CD pickup Leve the power on with no disc in the unit until norml plyck is possile (out 1 hour). Tpe hed Leve the power on with no cssette in the unit until norml plyck is possile (out 1 hour). Note If condenstion forms on the tpe hed, foreign mtter my ccumulte during use. Remote control Wipe off condenstion on the trnsmitter window with soft cloth efore operting the unit. STANDBY mode While the power is on, pressing the POWER switch (or the POWER utton on the remote control trnsmitter) switches the unit to the STANDBY mode. (In this mode, the indictor ove the POWER switch illumintes.) In this mode, min voltge is still present inside the unit. If you wnt to switch off the unit completely, disconnect the AC power plug from the wll socket. NOTE Plese check the copyright lws in your country to record from records, compct discs, rdio, etc. Recording of copyright mteril my infringe copyright lws. If this unit s opertion freezes or disply indictions re incorrect First disconnect the AC supply led from the wll AC outlet, nd then press the RESET utton on the rer of this unit t lest for one minute. This opertion resets the internl microcomputer which controls this unit. However, this opertion will lso erse ll memorized rodcsting sttions. To store sttions gin, follow the methods descried on pge WARNING To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose this unit to rin or moisture. To void electricl shock, do not open the cinet. Refer servicing to qulified personnel only. DANGER Invisile lser rdition when open nd interlock filed or defeted. Avoid direct exposure to em. CAUTION 1 Use of controls or djustments or performnce of procedures other thn those specified herein my result in hzrdous rdition exposure. CAUTION 2 As the lser em used in this compct disc plyer is hrmful to the eyes, do not ttempt to disssemle the cinet. Refer servicing to qulified personnel only. Lser Diode Properties Mteril: GAlAs Wvelength: 780nm Emission Durtion: continuous Lser Output: mx. 44.6µW* * This output is the vlue mesured t distnce of out 200mm from the ojective lens surfce on the Opticl Pick-up Block. The sound level t given volume setting depends on comintion of speker efficiency, loction nd my other fctors. Cre should e tken to void exposure to sudden high levels of sound, which my occur when turning on the unit with the volume control setting t high, nd to continuous high levels of sound. E-2

5 ACTIVE SERVO TECHNOLOGY Highmplitude ss sound Cinet Air woofer (Helmholtz resontor) Port Active Servo Processing Amplifier Signls Signls of low mplified Negtive-impednce output drive The theory of the Active Servo Technology is sed upon two mjor fctors, the Helmholtz resontor nd negtiveimpednce drive. Active Servo Processing spekers reproduce the ss frequencies through n ir woofer, which is smll port or opening in the speker s cinet. This opening is used insted of, nd performs the functions of, woofer in conventionlly designed speker system. Thus, signls of low mplitude within the cinet cn, ccording to the Helmholtz resonnce theory, e output from this opening s wves of gret mplitude if the design is such tht the size of the opening nd the volume of the cinet re in the correct proportion to stisfy certin rtio. In order to ccomplish this, moreover, the mplitudes within the cinet must e oth precise nd of sufficient power ecuse these mplitudes must overcome the lod presented y the ir tht exists within the cinet. Thus it is this prolem tht is resolved through the employment of design in which the mplifier functions to supply the signls. If the electricl resistnce of the voice coil is reduced to zero, the movement of the speker unit would ecome liner with respect to signl voltge, nd, to ccomplish this, specil negtive-impednce output-drive mplifier for sutrcting output impednce of the mplifier is used. By employing negtive-impednce drive circuits, the mplifier is le to generte precise, low-mplitude low-frequency wves with superior dmping chrcteristics, nd these wves re then rdited from the cinet opening s highmplitude signls. The system cn, therefore, y employing the negtive-impednce output drive mplifier nd speker cinet with the Helmholtz resontor, reproduce n extremely wide rnge of frequencies (28 Hz 20 khz) with mzing sound qulity nd less distortion. The fetures descried ove, then, re comined to e the fundmentl structure of the Active Servo Technology. E-3
