1 A CODED BIT-LOADING LINEAR PRECODED DISCRETE MULTITONE SOLUTION FOR POWER LINE COMMUNICATION Fahad Syed Muhammmad*, Jean-Yves Baudas, Jean-Franços Hélard, and Mattheu Crussère Insttute of Electroncs and Telecommuncatons of Rennes, 3543 Rennes Cedex, France arxv: v1 [cs.it] 3 Sep 28 ABSTRACT Lnear precoded dscrete multtone modulaton (LP-DMT) system has been already proved advantageous wth adaptve resource allocaton algorthm n a power lne communcaton (PLC) context. In ths paper, we nvestgate the bt and energy allocaton algorthm of an adaptve LP-DMT system takng nto account the channel codng scheme. A coded adaptve LP-DMT system s presented n the PLC context wth a loadng algorthm whch accommodates the channel codng gans n bt and energy calculatons. The performance of a concatenated channel codng scheme, consstng of an nner We s 4-dmensonal 16-states trells code and an outer Reed- Solomon code, n combnaton wth the proposed algorthm s analyzed. Smulaton results are presented for a fxed target bt error rate n a multcarrer scenaro under power spectral densty constrant. Usng a multpath model of PLC channel, t s shown that the proposed coded adaptve LP-DMT system performs better than classcal coded dscrete multtone. 1. INTRODUCTION The magc of dscrete multtone modulaton (DMT) s hdden n ts orthogonal subcarrers, that enhance ts capablty to cope effcently wth narrowband nterference, hgh frequency attenuatons and multpath fadngs wth the help of smple equalzaton flters. Adaptve lnear precoded dscrete multtone (LP-DMT) system s based on classcal DMT, combned wth a lnear precodng component. Combnatons of multcarrer (MC) and lnear precodng (LP) have proved ther sgnfcance n the dgtal subscrber lne (DSL) context [1]. Uncoded LP-DMT has already been suggested for power lne communcaton (PLC) networks n [2] wth a loadng algorthm that handles the subcarrer, code, bt, and energy resource dstrbuton among the actve users but wthout takng nto account the channel codng scheme. Assumng perfect channel state nformaton (CSI) at the transmttng sde, energy and bts are effcently dstrbuted among the precodng sequences by the loadng algorthm to acheve ether hgh throughput or hgh robustness. In ths paper, we examne the performance of an LP-DMT system explotng a resource allocaton algorthm whch takes nto account the channel cod- *Emal: fahad.syed-muhammad@ens.nsa-rennes.fr ng scheme. The loadng algorthm, proposed n [2], s modfed to accommodate the codng gans assocated wth the channel codng scheme. The proposed bt and energy allocaton algorthm can be used n combnaton wth any channel codng scheme, no matter t has constant or varable codng gans for dfferent modulaton orders, provded the obtaned codng gans are known for all the modulaton orders. The sutable codng scheme for PLC networks should have large codng gans, reasonable mplementaton complexty and some measure of burst mmunty. Selected on these bases, the proposed concatenated channel codng scheme conssts of an nner We s 4-dmensonal (4D) 16-states trells code [3] and an outer Reed-Solomon (RS) code. Ths combnaton has already proved ts sgnfcance n xdsl systems and has been ncluded n many standards [4]. The effcent performance of We s 4D 16-states trells code over gaussan channel has also been demonstrated n [5]. Here, we apply a resource allocaton algorthm to an LP-DMT system whch takes nto account ths concatenated channel codng scheme. The rest of the paper s organzed as follows. In Secton 2 the structure of a coded LP-DMT system s descrbed. The modfed bt loadng algorthm s descrbed n Secton 3. Secton 4 gves the expresson of the obtaned codng gan along wth the loss ncurred due to redundances. In Secton 5, smulaton scenaros are dscussed and results are presented for the classcal DMT system and the proposed adaptve LP- DMT system usng a multpath PLC channel model [6] for both coded and uncoded mplementatons. LP-DMT and DMT smulatons, for both coded and uncoded scenaros, are run for varous channel gans, whle usng the power lne channel model suggested n [6]. It s shown that the proposed coded LP-DMT system wth the modfed bt loadng algorthm performs better than coded DMT and acheves hgher throughput for PLC applcatons. Fnally, Secton 6 concludes ths paper. 2. SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONS The structure of the suggested system, ncludng the proposed channel codng scheme, s shown n Fg. 1. The entre bandwdth s dvded nto N parallel subcarrers whch are splt up nto N k sets S k of L c subcarrers. The precodng functon s then appled block-wse by mean of precodng sequences
2 used here s a shortened RS code RS(24,224), supported n many standards [7], and can correct up to 8 erroneous bytes. A convolutonal nterleaver s used to spread the errors over a number of RS codewords. 3. THE LOADING ALGORITHM Fg. 1. Coded LP-DMT transmtter structure of length L c. In fact, the precodng functon can be vewed as a spreadng component carred out n the frequency doman as n multcarrer code-dvson-multple-access (MC- CDMA). Factor L c s such that L c N, whch mples that N k = N L c. Note that the subsets n a gven set are not necessarly adjacent. Each useruof the network s beng assgned a setb u of subsetss k. We emphasze that u, B u are mutually exclusve subsets. Consequently, multple access between the N u users s managed followng a frequency dvson multple access (FDMA) approach, nstead of a code dvson multple access (CDMA) approach. It s worthy to menton here that we are gong to consder the only case of a sngle user multple block system whch can be easly extended for a mult user multple block scenaro. The number of precodng sequences used to spread nformaton symbols on one subset S k s denoted byn c (k), wth N c (k) L c snce we assume orthogonal sequences. A certan amount of energy s assgned to each precodng sequence c assocated to a gven modulaton symbol ofb (k) bts, where1 N c (k). Fnally, n the followng,h = {1,...,N} wll be the set of the useful subcarrers of the multcarrer spectrum. We s trells code operates on the bts allocated to the precodng sequences and produces two 2D ponts at ts output. In Fg. 1, only a sngle output s shown for We s trells encoder, because both 2D outputs are allocated to the same precodng sequence. Also multple copes of We s encoder s shown for the purpose of llustraton whereas, n practce a sngle encoder s used to encode across the precodng sequences as dscussed n [5], where a sngle encoder s used to encode across the subcarrers. It wll be shown n Secton 5 that smlar to ndependent and memoryless subchannels n a DMT scenaro, precodng sequences are also ndependent and memoryless n an LP-DMT scenaro. The gan obtaned from the applcaton of trells code wll therefore be the same as that obtaned n an ntersymbol nterference (ISI) free envronment. The RS code operates on the bnary stream at the nput of the system, before the bt allocaton block as shown n Fg. 1. The RS code The presented sngle user multple block case of the bt loadng algorthm takes nto account the channel codng scheme and s modfed to accommodate the channel codng gans n bt and energy calculatons. Over a gven subset of subcarrerss k, the optmal acheved throughput under PSD constrant s gven as R k = L c log Γ L c E s 1 h n N 2 n S k (1) where h n 2 s the gan of subchannel n, Γ s defned as normalzed sgnal to nose rato (also known as SNR gap),e s s obtaned from a gven power spectral densty (PSD) constrant andn s the addtve background whte Gaussan nose level. SNR gap, Γ, has a constant value for all the modulaton orders of uncoded quadrature ampltude modulaton (QAM) for a fxed target SER. However, (1) does not provde any practcal throughput because t assumes nfnte granularty. 1 The task here s therefore to fnd an approprate bt dstrbuton for L c avalable precodng sequences of each subset S k, whch maxmzes the data rate. In the followng, we dscuss the allocaton polcy that handles the fnte granularty problem. Gven an SNR gap Γ, a precodng factor L c and a transmsson level E s, the rate acheved by an adaptve LP-DMT system usng dscrete modulaton s maxmzed f, on each subset S k, b (k) andb (k) where bts are allocated to precodng sequence c s gven as b (k) R k /L c +1 (1 n (k) c ) = (2) R k /L c (n (k) c < N c (k) ) n (k) c = L c (2 R k/l c R k /L c 1). Then, practcally achevable data rate R k, consderng fnte granularty, on each subsets k s gven as R k = L c (2 R k/l c R k /L c 1) ( R k /L c +1) +(L c L c (2 R k/l c R k /L c 1) ) R k /L c (3) Now we can optmally assgn a partcular modulaton order to each precodng sequence on dfferent subsets. Each precodng sequence s energy contrbuton n the total energy of a 1 nfnte granularty: non-nteger modulaton order
3 subcarrer of a gven subset,, s gven as = (2 b(k) 1) Γ 1 L 2 N c h n 2 (4) n S k < E s. As dscussed above, Γ s whch satsfes defned for a gven target SER wth uncoded QAM and have a constant value for all the modulaton orders. In ths paper we are gong to deal wth fxed target bt error rate (BER) nstead of SER. Then takng nto account the codng gans and fxed BERs, Γ s no more constant for all the modulaton orders. The above algorthm s modfed to accommodate varable Γ for dfferent modulaton orders. The exact values of the SNR gaps for all the modulaton orders are stored n a predefned table and are denoted byγ (k). These values are calculated on the bass of the selected channel codng scheme and the requred system margn, whch we are gong to dscuss n Secton 4. For a gven subset S k, ntally, we can take any value forγ, say Γ nt(k) = 1. The closer the ntal value to the exact value, the more effcent s the algorthm. R k s calculated from (1) usngγ nt(k) whleb (k) andn (k) c from (2). Now the exact value of SNR gap,γ (k), s taken from the table dependng upon the bt vector b (k), and s calculated from (4) usng Γ (k). Gradually bts are added n the bt vector, b (k), tll exceeds the PSD lmt, E s, and subsequently bts are removed to respect the PSD lmt. We can summarze the modfed approach as follows: 1: CalculateR k,n (k) c andb (k) forγ nt(k) 2: Now takeγ (k), dependng uponb (k) 3: Calculate forγ (k) 4: Start a( counter, saycnt ) = 1 5: whle > E s do 6: b (k) (n = c+cnt) b(k) (n +1 c+cnt) 7: cnt = cnt+1 8: update 9: end whle ( 1: whle > E s ) do 11: cnt = cnt 1 12: b (k) (n = c+cnt) b(k) (n 1 c+cnt) 13: update 14: end whle 4. THEORETICAL CODING GAINS In ths secton, the theoretcal expressons are gven for the selected channel codng scheme by usng the assumptons gven n [5]. The SNR gapγfor a target BER of1 7 s gven as Γ = 9.8+γ m γ c (db) (5) where γ m s the desred margn n the system and γ c, the codng gan for the proposed concatenated channel codng scheme, s gven as γ c = γ tc,db +γ rs,db γ loss,db (db) (6) where γ tc,db and γ rs,db are the gans provded by the trells code and the RS code respectvely and γ loss,db s the loss ncurred for ncreasng the data rate. γ rs,db : The gan obtaned by RS decoder s gven as γ rs = Γ,Pbt Γ rs (db) (7) whereγ rs s the SNR gap to obtanp b, the BER at the output of the demodulator, and s gven as 2 Γ rs = 1 3 ( Q 1 [ Pb 2 ] ) 2 and Γ,Pbt s the SNR gap to obtan P bt, the BER of the uncoded system, and s gven as Γ,Pbt = 1 3 ( Q 1 [ Pbt 2 ] ) 2 γ tc,db : As P b s the requred BER at the nput to the RS decoder and Γ,Pb and Γ tc,pb are the SNR gaps requred by an uncoded and a We s 4D 16-states trells coded system respectvely to acheve P b. Then the codng gan of a We s 4D 16- states trells code can be gven by (8) (9) γ tc = Γ,Pb Γ tc,pb (db) (1) γ loss,db : IfPtot (b) s the mnmum amount of power requred to acheve the data rate b as defned n [5], the loss for the ncreased data rate assocated wth the RS code,γ loss,db, can be gven as γ loss,db = P tot,db( nb k ) P tot,db(b) (11) 5. SIMULATION RESULTS In ths secton, we wll present smulaton results for the proposed concatenated channel codng scheme combned wth the adaptve LP-DMT system and the modfed bt loadng algorthm. The performance of the coded adaptve LP-DMT system s compared wth that of the coded DMT,.e., when L c =1, and uncoded LP-DMT. The generated LP-DMT sgnal s composed of N =124 subcarrers transmtted n the band 2 dvson by 2 nq 1 [.] results from the assumpton that BER s one-half the 2-D error rate [5].

The subcarrer spacng s khz. It s assumed that the synchronzaton and channel estmaton tasks have been successfully performed. We use the multpath model for the power lne channel as proposed n [6] and shown n Fg. 2. The consdered reference model s 11 m lnk 15-paths model whose frequency response s gven by H(f) = N g e (a+a1fk ) d e j2πf(τ) (12) =1 a result whch has been wdely proved n practce. The parameters of the 15-path model are lsted n Table 1, and τ s the delay of path. A background nose level of -11 dbm/hz s assumed and the sgnal s transmtted wth respect to a flat PSD of -4 dbm/hz. The maxmum number of bts per symbol s lmted to 1 and mnmum number of bts per symbol s 2. Results are gven for a fxed target BER of1 7. The correspondng SNR s then gven by SNR = 3 + G db +11. The performance of LP-DMT s compared wth DMT at dfferent average channel gans for both coded and uncoded mplementatons, where coded LP-DMT mplementaton uses the proposed algorthm as dscussed n Secton 3. The DMT system can be obtaned by takng L c = 1 n the LP-DMT system. The smulatons are run for a sngle user multple block scenaro. The proposed adaptve coded LP- DMT system can easly be extended to a mult user multple block scenaro. The reason for the better performance of the

Percentage ncrease n the throughput 85 coded LP-DMT system s explaned n Fg. 4, where energy dstrbuton of the coded LP-DMT s compared wth that of the coded DMT. The spke-shaped curve of the coded DMT shows the transtons of the modulaton orders (.e. decreasng the constellaton szes) when no more energy s avalable to sustan the fxed target BER. It s clear that the coded DMT s not fully explotng the avalable energy on each subcarrer due to fnte granularty and PSD constrants, whle the precodng component of the coded LP-DMT system accumulates the energes of a gven subset of subcarrers to transmt addtonal bts. Both systems respect the PSD constrant of -4 dbm/hz as defned earler. The coded adaptve LP-DMT system utlzes more effcently ths PSD lmt n comparson wth the coded DMT system. Fg. 4 gves the mnmal requred energy allowng the transmsson of the maxmum data rate. Accordng to the PSD mask, the resdual avalable energy would not lead to any ncrease n the data rate. Fg. 5 gves the percentage ncrease n the throughput obtaned by coded LP-DMT n comparson of coded DMT and uncoded LP-DMT for varous values of average channel gan. The vertcal broken lne n Fg. 5 represents the reference power lne channel model proposed by Zmmermann. As t s shown n Fg. 4 and 5 that coded LP-DMT has the hghest throughput and more effcent energy utlzaton when compared to coded DMT (see Fg. 4). Furthermore, t s worth notng that coded LP-DMT s all the more nterestng when the channel gan s low,.e., the recepton SNR s low. For nstance, at an average channel gan of -6 db, there s an mprovement n the throughput of approxmately 34.3% and 12.5% when we compare our coded LP-DMT system wth uncoded LP-DMT and coded DMT respectvely for a fxed target BER of 1 7. Ths mprovement becomes 51% and 17.5% respectvely at an average channel gan of -7 db and s even hgher at lower channel gans. Hence, we conclude that the proposed system can especally be advantageously exploted for poor SNR whch s equvalent to clam that the proposed system ensures relable communcaton over longer lnks and effectvely ncreases the range of PLC systems. 6. CONCLUSION In ths paper, the resource allocaton problem of a coded adaptve LP-DMT system s nvestgated. The proposed resource allocaton algorthm ncorporates the effect of channel codng n energy and bt dstrbuton and handles varous values of the SNR gap dependng upon the constellaton sze. The performance of the proposed system s compared wth that of coded DMT and uncoded LP-DMT and t s shown that the proposed system was able to transmt hgher rates especally for lower channel gans. The performance s compared whle applyng the same proposed codng scheme to both the systems, although the proposed algorthm can be used n combnaton wth any channel codng scheme provded the SNR gaps of that scheme are known for all the modulaton orders. It s shown that usng a powerful but low-complexty codng scheme wth the proposed algorthm, mproves the throughput of the system sgnfcantly and can especally be advantageously exploted for poor SNR. 7.
