Safety Information IMPORTANT READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS carefully and completely before operating your radio and retain this manual for future reference. Failure to observe the instructions could result in personal injury, death, and/or damage to your radio, accessories and/or other property. Batteries & Chargers This equipment contains a lithium-ion battery pack. NEVER dispose of the lithium-ion battery in fire. An explosion may result. DO NOT short-circuit the battery pack. DO NOT charge the lithium-ion battery in any other charger. DO NOT operate the charger if it has been broken or damaged in any way. DO NOT disassemble the charger. It is not a user serviceable item. ALWAYS dispose of lithium-ion batteries according to local regulations. ALWAYS switch the radio OFF when charging battery. ONLY use approved accessories. ONLY use the charger in dry locations. The charger is not suitable for outdoor use. Radio Antenna DO NOT use any portable radio that has a damaged antenna. If a damaged antenna comes into contact with the skin, a minor burn may result. DO NOT change or modify the antenna. Unauthorized antennas, modifications, or attachments could damage the radio and violate its compliance status. DO NOT hold the antenna when the radio is in use. Holding the antenna reduces talk range and may cause bodily harm. 4

Use In Vehicles You must comply with local, regional and national laws and regulations regarding the use of two way radio in vehicles at all times. DO NOT place your radio in the area adjacent to or in front of an air bag or in the air bag deployment area. Air bags inflate with great force. If a radio is placed in the air bag deployment area and the air bag inflates, the radio may be propelled with great force and cause serious injury to the occupants of the vehicle. Potentially Explosive Atmospheres This radio is NOT Intrinsically Safe. Turn your radio OFF prior to entering any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire resulting in injury or even death. Note: The areas with potentially explosive atmospheres are often, but not always, marked. They will include fuelling areas such as below decks on shops, fuel or chemical transfer or storage facilities, areas where the air contains chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust or metal powders, and any other area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine. Blasting Caps and Hazardous Areas To avoid possible interference with blasting operations, switch off your radio when you are near electrical blasting caps or in a blasting area or other area signposted: Switch off two-way radios or similar. Obey all signs and instructions. Radio Operation and EME Exposure NEVER operate your radio with the antenna less than 5 cm from your body and keep transmitting time minimal. ALWAYS use the supplied belt clip if you wear a radio on your body when transmitting. 5

Electromagnetic Interference Nearly every electronic device is susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI). To avoid the possibility of electromagnetic interference and/or compatibility conflicts, switch off your radio in any location where posted notices instruct you to do so, such as health care facilities. Use In Aircraft When instructed to do so, switch OFFyour radio on board an aircraft. Any use of a radio must be in accordance with applicable regulations and aircrew instructions. Pacemakers The Advanced Medical Technology Association recommends that a minimum separation of 15 cm be maintained between a handheld wireless radio and a pacemaker. These recommendations are consistent with the independent research by, and recommendations of, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Persons with pacemakers should: Always keep the radio more than 15 cm from their pacemaker when the radio is switched ON. Do not carry the radio in the breast pocket. Use the ear opposite the pacemaker to minimize the potential for interference. Turn the radio OFF immediately if there is any reason to suspect that interference is taking place. Hearing Aids Some radios may interfere with hearing aids. In the event of such interference, please consult your hearing aid manufacturer or supplier to discuss alternatives. 6

Other Medical Devices If you use any personal medical device, consult the manufacturer of your device to determine that it is adequately shielded from RF energy. Your physician may be able to assist you in obtaining this information. User Safety NEVER hold the radio so that the antenna is very close to, or touching exposed parts of the body, especially the face or eyes, while transmitting. The radio will perform best if the microphone is held 5 10 cm from the lips and the radio is vertical. NEVER operate the radio with a headset or other audio accessory at a high volume level. NEVER short the terminals of the battery pack. NEVER use your radio outdoors during a thunderstorm. DO NOT push the PTT button if you do not intend to transmit. DO NOT modify the radio for any reason. DO NOT use any non-approved battery packs or chargers. AVOID storing or charging your radio in direct sunlight. AVOID storing, using or charging your radio where temperatures are below -20 C or above +60 C. AVOID exposing the radio to heavy rain, and NEVER immerse it in water. The radio construction is water resistant and NOT waterproof (submersible). DO keep the radio out of reach of babies and small children. Changes or modifications to your radio that are not expressly approved or authorised may void your authority to operate the radio under relevant laws and regulations. Declaration of Conformity We hereby declare that the Opus T2 radio is compliant with the essential requirements and other relevant provisions of Directive 1999/5/EC. 7

Charging the battery pack Your Opus T2 radio is supplied with a rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack. This battery should be fully charged before first use to ensure optimum capacity and performance. The battery is designed specifically for use with the Opus T2 and related charger. Do not use a battery or charger from a different product. For maximum flexibility, you can charge the battery separately or whilst attached to the radio. The supplied lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery can be safely re-charged after only partial use. It is not necessary to fully discharge the battery between charges. Operating time To extend the operating time (endurance) of your radio between charges, your radio is equipped with a Battery Save feature which is enabled by default. 11 Charging procedure or AC Adaptor Desktop Charger 1. Place the Desktop Charger on a flat surface. 2. Connect the AC Adaptor lead to the Desktop Charger unit. 3. Plug the AC Adaptor into the mains supply (wall socket) and switch on. The LED indicator on the Desktop Charger will glow Red for 2 seconds. 4. If the battery is attached to the radio, ensure that the radio is switched OFF. 5. Align the slots on the battery pack with the ridges in the Desktop Charger and insert the radio/battery into the Desktop Charger. The LED indicator on the Desktop Charger will blink Red for a few seconds and then glow Red to show that charging is in progress. 6. The approximate charging time for a flat battery is 4 hours. 7. When the LED indicator on the Desktop Charger glows Green the battery is fully charged. Remove the battery/radio from the Desktop Charger. To conserve energy and reduce your environmental footprint please disconnect the AC Adaptor from the mains supply when not in use. 11

Communicating Switching the radio ON/OFF & adjusting the volume To switch the radio ON, rotate the On/Off/Volume control clockwise. The radio will click ON, emit a confirmation tone sequence and announce the channel number. The volume will increase as you rotate the On/Off/Volume control clockwise. Rotating the control anti-clockwise will decrease the volume. To switch the radio OFF, rotate the On/Off/Volume control anti-clockwise until the radio clicks off. Note: Exercise caution when adjusting the volume to avoid damage to your hearing. Selecting a channel To select a channel, rotate the Channel Selector Knob until you reach the required channel. A voice announces the selected channel (if channel annunciation is enabled). All radios wishing to communicate must use the same channel. Talking 1. Switch on your radio. Adjust the volume and select the required channel. 2. Monitor the channel for activity. 3. To send a message, hold the radio upright, approximately 5-10cm from your mouth. Press and hold the PTT button and speak slowly and clearly into the microphone. Release the PTT when you have finished your message. 4. Await a response to your message and then proceed on a take-turns basis (only one user can talk at a time). 5. It is good radio etiquette to end each message with over and to end the entire communication with out. 12

LED status indicator The status of your radio is shown via the LED Status Indicator. LED Indicator Red Heartbeat Solid Red Solid Yellow Solid Green Green Heartbeat Double Yellow Heartbeats Radio Status Low Battery Transmit (TX) (PRO version) Transmit (TX) (446 version) Receive (RX) Scanning activated VOX mode Talk range The Opus T2 has been designed to maximize performance and provide the best transmission range. The communication range of all radios is directly affected by the terrain. The best performance will occur in open, flat areas, whilst obstructions such as trees and buildings will progressively reduce the effective range and increase interference. Concrete structures, heavy foliage, metal buildings and operating indoors or inside vehicles will have the worst effect on range. Avoiding obstructions and maintaining a clear line of sight between users will provide the most reliable communication. Additional equipment may be required for reliable communication in problem areas contact your supplier for details. 13

Other Radio Functions Monitor It is courteous to monitor a channel for radio traffic before communicating to avoid interfering with other users. To monitor the channel (regardless of privacy code), press and release the P1 side button. You will hear any weak radio signals and squelch noise. Press P1 button again to switch off the monitor mode. If the channel is not in use proceed with your call Channel scan (446 version only) Scanning allows you to sequentially check other radio channels for conversations. When activated, the radio automatically steps through each channel position, pausing when a channel is in use. This allows you to listen and communicate with users on that channel without having to change channel manually. Once the channel activity stops, the radio will pause for 5 seconds before scanning resumes. If scanning has paused, simultaneous transmissions on other channels will not be heard. To start scanning press the P2 side button. The LED indicator shows a green heartbeat. To stop scanning, press the P2side button again. If you press the PTT button while the radio is scanning, the radio will transmit on the channel that is currently selected by the channel control. If you press the PTT button while the radio is paused, the radio will transmit on the channel being received. When scanning you may hear conversations that you wish to skip. To temporarily remove a channel from the scanning cycle, wait for the scanning to pause on the nuisance channel and then press and hold the P2 side button until the radio beeps once. The channel will not be scanned again until you exit the Scan mode or switch OFF your radio. 14

Hands-free use/vox Your Opus T2 can be used hands-free without the need for additional accessories. To enable VOX (hands-free) mode, press and hold the PTT button while switching the radio ON. The LED status indicator will show a double yellow heartbeat whilst the VOX mode is active. Speak clearly towards the radio to automatically activate the transmit mode. To avoid accidental operation there is a brief pause between the time you speak and the radio transmitting. The sensitivity of the radio has been pre-set and you may need to adjust the distance between the user and the radio to provide optimal operation. During VOX operation you should minimise background noise since this may also activate the transmit mode. VOX mode will be de-activated when you switch OFF your radio. Channel annunciation When switching ON your radio or changing the channel, the radio will announce the selected channel number. To adjust this setting, press and hold the P1 side button while switching the radio ON. Repeating this process will cycle through English, Silent (indicated by a beep) and Chinese announcements. Function button lock To lock/unlock the P1 and P2 side function buttons, switch ON your radio and then press and hold both function buttons P1 and P2 until the radio emits a beep. The radio will retain this setting when switched ON/OFF. Radio reset To reset your radio simultaneously press and hold the PTT, P1 and P2 side buttons and switch ON your radio. Release the buttons when the radio emits a beep and the status LED glows yellow. 15

Troubleshooting The following is a non-exhaustive list of possible faults and remedies. Please check the website for further information and advice. If you continue to experience a problem please contact your supplier. Issue Radio won t switch on Hearing other conversations Poor audio quality Limited talk range No transmit or receive Possible cause and solution Check battery connection. Recharge/replace the battery pack. Operating temperature (high/low temperatures will affect battery life). Water damage. Select a different channel. Position radio correctly. Check volume setting. Recharge/replace the battery pack. Check speaker and microphone for dirt or debris/obstruction. Check for nearby electrical interference. Reduce obstructions. Steel and/or concrete structures, heavy foliage, buildings and vehicles all decrease range. Try to minimise such obstacles and achieve a clearer line of sight to improve transmission. Wearing radio close to body such as in a pocket or on a belt decreases range. Upgrade antenna (PRO version only) Change location of other radio(s). Check that all radios are using the same channel. Make sure the PTT button is completely pressed when talking and released when listening. Check battery connection. Recharge/replace the battery pack. Check that the radio is not Scanning. 16

Heavy static or interference Low battery Desktop Charger LED does not blink and/or battery does not charge Cannot use VOX Radios are too close together they must be at least 2m apart. Radios are out of range or obstacles are interfering with transmission. Nearby electronic devices may be causing interference. Recharge/replace the battery pack. Operating temperature (high/low temperatures will affect battery life). Battery is faulty or has reached end of life. Possible charger fault. Check that the radio/battery is properly inserted. Check the battery and charger contacts are clean and dry. Check that the AC outlet is switched on. Check that the AC Adaptor and Desktop Charger are connected correctly. Battery or charger is faulty. Try a different battery pack and charger combination (if available) to determine which is faulty. VOX feature is not activated. VOX sensitivity level is too low. Audio accessory is not VOX compatible. Audio accessory is faulty. Note: If a radio feature does not correspond to the default values or does not operate as expected, check with your supplier to see if your radio has been pre-set with a different configuration. 17
