1 AA4AK Receives Triple Play Award PEGGY SUE GERRON, EX-K5PSG (SK) Peggy Sue Gerron, ex-k5psg, of Lubbock, Texas, who inspired singer Buddy Holly's 1957 rockabilly hit "Peggy Sue," died on October 1. She was 78. The MARA s own DR Steve Kercel, AA4AK received the ARRL s coveted WAS Triple Play Award. Using Logbook of the World (LoTW) he confirmed QSOs with each of the 50 states on voice, CW, and digital modes. That is one hell of an achievement. AT-A-BOY DR Steve! First licensed in 2004 as KE5AKW, she later obtained the vanity call K5PSG. Her license expired in 2014, and K5PSG has since been reissued. Gerron went to high school with Holly and later married The Crickets drummer, Jerry Allison. As rock 'n' roll history has it, Holly originally titled the song "Cindy Lou," but Allison convinced the singer to change the tune's name to "Peggy Sue." In a 2004 interview, Gerron said that story is close to the truth, but not entirely accurate.

After Holly's death in 1959, Gerron toured with The Crickets when the band got back together. Over the years, Gerron made public and media appearances all over the country.

Sagadahoc County EMA SET Report By DR Steve Kercel, AA4AK On, Saturday 10/27 from 1000 to 1100 Hours (EDT), several members of the MARA and Midcoast ARES/CERT participated in a Sagadahoc County Simulated Emergency Test (SET) to demonstrate to County EMA officials the ability and capabilities on the area Ham Radio operators. Various locations around and adjacent to the county were linked up via voice and data radio communications, such as Sagadahoc Co. Courthouse, Am. Red Cross HQ Topsham, West Bath Fire station, Phippsburg Firehouse; and broad communications capabilities at the QTH of W1ZE in Phippsburg. During the SET solid voice communications were demonstrated to all active points and Stations from Boothbay to Gardner via the KS1R repeater, Digital text communications were established via packet between W1ZE's, QTH (uptown Phippsburg) and Phippsburg Firehouse (downtown Phippsburg) (WD1F). Sag EMA (AA4AK) demonstrated the group s ability to send real-time still photos via the repeater s FUSION capabilities, by sending a photo taken from his handheld transceiver to KC1HOH in West Gardiner. A sit-rep was relayed via formal NTS message from the Red Cross Chapter House (Topsham) via the MHz repeater Harry, N1TTT & Steve, AA4AK at Sagadahoc county EMA The drill started and ended on time, with all participants on-station and operational by FWIW: A real Nor Easter started to hit Bath just as the simulation was closing down. Boothbay) Demonstrated the repeater coverage up the coast. Also provided real-time weather data on a non-simulated Nor Easter that was closing in on the operation. WD1F - Donnie Dauphin (Phippsburg Firehouse) Provided ongoing situation reporting from Phippsburg Fire Station. Also established digital packet communications between uptown Phippsburg and downtown Phippsburg. KB1IEF - Louise Dauphin (Phippsburg Firehouse) Louise is a professional EMT who works from an ambulance based at Phippsburg FD. She helps keep it real. W1ZE - Bruce Randall (Phippsburg) Provided ongoing situation reporting from uptown Phippsburg; his station is all modes and all bands, and includes an emergency generator. Also established digital packet communications between uptown Phippsburg and downtown Phippsburg, via a packet node in midtown Phippsburg. KC1HOH = Robert Buckmore (West Gardiner) Demonstrated the repeater coverage inland. Established both analog (FM) and digital voice communications with SAG EMA. Received a digital photo transmitted from SAG EMA via the digital repeater in Phippsburg. Also provided real-time weather data on a non-simulated Nor Easter that was closing in on the operation. W1DYJ - Larry Banks (South Harpswell) Demonstrated the repeater coverage down the coast. Also provided real-time weather data on a non-simulated Nor Easter that was closing in on the operation. A DX bulletin replaces or is added to the regular bulletins between 0100 UTC (8 PM EST) Thursdays and 0100 UTC (8 PM EST) Fridays. Audio from W1AW's CW code practices, CW/digital bulletins and phone bulletin is available using EchoLink via the W1AW Conference Server named "W1AWBDCT." The monthly W1AW Qualifying Runs are presented here as well. The audio is sent in real-time and runs concurrently with W1AW's regular transmission schedule. John Peters was our NCS way back when and was a really cool guy. He will be impossible to forget. God only makes one of a kind and when they are gone there is simply no replacement. Others have taken over, but fall short of measuring up to what went before them. John Peters will be missed. Heaven is a great place to be! John attended the training sessions for New Hams at the Emergency Management Conference Room in Wiscasset, ME years ago. It was a 12 week course when Maine Yankee Nuclear Power Station needed back-up communications in case of an emergency. After the 1/st meeting, John invited several participants to his Radio Shack at his house in Edgcomb, ME to show us his capabilities and gave us a demonstration. Now, this is John big time. His enthusiasm showed us the direction for us to get our FCC license and follow the ARRL (American Radio Relay League), Headquarters in Newington, CT. Although he was not teaching the course, K1NI was, John was quite instrumental in explaining the find art of Amateur Radio. Some of his equipment at that time included KWM-2, IC-751-A, Ameratron AL-80-A, and at the present he was repairing a tuner and was able to explain and teach us all about the various kinds of tuners. During this visit, John became an ELMER to many of us, and demonstrated stand-by emergency communications during the

Tin-Can referred to the smaller DE style Destroyers that acted as convey to larger Navy ships during deployment. Those ships were USS Montague (AKA-98) & USS Charles R, Ware (DD-865). Remember, John was from Long Island, NY and many of his buddies went thru CW training as Radio Officers on Liberty Ships that were being built all over the country including Maine. The Lincoln County Amateur Radio Club was formed and John Peters, K2LOT became President. The club gathered equipment and started a 2 meter repeater on mhz and we had Sunday evening meetings over the airwaves. The club also participated in Lighthouse Weekend and Field Day both at John's house and neighbors in Edgcomb, Jefferson and East Boothbay, ME Other interests of John included visiting various Club Meetings in Brunswick/Topsham, ME and the United Stated Coast Guard Auxiliary for many years. He also was a Head Usher at the St Patrick's Catholic Church in Newcastle, ME Were you a licensed Ham Radio operator on or before December, 1993? In closing, all of us amateurs are keeping alive the spirit of the men who served in the maritime service and were trained to become the life-line for our men fighting in every theater.
