This is necessary to avoid damage to it, as well as for user-safety. Only use the instrument for the purpose for which it was designed. Only use the instrument in dry rooms in which there is no risk of explosion. Do not open the instrument. Do not connect any other pieces of equipment other than those specified to the instrument. Never open the battery compartment without first switching off the instrument and disconnecting the measuring leads. Only use connecting leads with safety plugs when measuring voltages above 30 V. Only connect voltages above 300 V via the kv socket 7. Never measure hazardous voltages if they are above kv. Voltages above 0 kv must only be connected through a suitable high voltage probe and its operating instructions must be observed exactly. The instrument should be protected from severe impacts and from damp conditions. If the instrument becomes faulty or if it suffers visible damage, then it should be taken out of operation. It should be sent without delay to our service department for repair. The instrument conforms to the safety regulations of DIN/VDE 04. Working with the instrument represents no hazard and is safe if the following safety guidelines are observed. Please read these instructions carefully before operating the instrument: 2 PURPOSE AND CHARACTERISTICS The ADM 2 Analogue Demo Multimeter is a modern, universally applicable multimeter which has been designed with educational requirements in mind. It contains a moving coil instrument which, in conjunction with the integral battery
2 driven amplifier, enables the measurement of voltages and currents over extremely wide ranges. The instrument exhibits a high internal resistance on the voltage measurement ranges and a particularly low voltage drop on the current measurement ranges when compared to traditional measurement instruments. It has eight switchable scales, including one with centre-zero and one for resistance measurements, and only the actual applicable scale is visible. 3 FUNCTIONAL AND OPERATING ELEMENTS Fig. 2 shows the functional elements and controls visible from the front, Fig. 3 from the side and Fig. 5 show those visible from the back of the instrument. 5 4-mm safety socket (blue) for use with all types of measurements. 6 4-mm safety socket (red) for all current measurement ranges. The + pole should be connected here for direct voltage measurements. 7 4-mm safety socket (red) for kv measurements. Never open the battery compartment without first switching off the instrument and disconnecting the measuring leads. 7 Selector switch for selecting the unit, the function is the same as for 3. 8 Fold-away carrying handle. 4 NOTES ON OPERATION This high-quality instrument fulfils all of the technical requirements that are compiled in current EC guidelines. The characteristics of this product qualify it for the CE mark. The ADM 2 is only to be put into operation under specialist supervision in a controlled electromagnetic environment in research, educational and training facilities (schools, universities, institutes and laboratories). This means that in such an environment, no mobile phones etc. are to be used in the immediate vicinity. The individual connecting leads are each not to be longer than 2 m. The instrument can be so influenced by electrostatic charges and other electromagnetic phenomena that it no longer functions within the given technical specifications. The following measures reduce or do away with disturbances: Avoid fitted carpets; ensure potential equalization; carry out experiments on a conductive, earthed surface, use screened cables, do not operate high-frequency emitters (radios, mobile phones) in the immediate vicinity. When a total failure of the instrument occurs, unplug it and plug it back in again for a reset. 5 HANDLING 8 5. Inserting the batteries Make certain that the instrument is switched off and that no measuring leads are connected. Place the unit on its front face on a flat surface. There is a slot on each side between the back wall of the battery compartment and the back of the housing. Insert a coin into one of the slots and prize off the lid 7 6 by tilting the coin outwards. If the procedure is repeated on the other side, then the lid is lifted off. Insert the three.5 V batteries, type IEC R20 ( Monocells, order no ) into the battery compartment with the correct polarity as shown in the drawing. Close the lid of the battery compartment. 5.2 Battery check The condition of the batteries is indicated by the digital display at the back of the instrument. If the text LOBAT appears in the left upper corner of the display, then the complete set of batteries should be replaced by three new ones (see section 5.). 5.3 Initial operation The instrument is switched on by selecting the required mode AC/DC using the selector switch 8 on the front or 5 at the back. It is immediately ready for operation. The unit and scale and therefore the desired measurement range are set with the switches 3/7 and /. Once these steps have been carried out, the measurement circuit can be connected. Important: The instrument is fitted with an automatic cut-off device to increase the battery life. This device operates about 45 minutes after switching on. The fact that the instrument has switched itself off can be seen in that the pointer remains at the start of the scale irrespective of the quantity being measured. In order to activate the instrument again, the switch 8/5 must be switched temporarily to the OFF position and then to the required AC/DC mode again. 5.4 Practical operating hints The procedure described in section 5.3 in which the optimum measuring range should be set and then the measurement circuit connected cannot be adopted in many practical situations in education. Often the measurement range needs to be changed during a measurement. The instrument has therefore been designed so that this is possible without risking damage to the instrument even if a range is selected that is too sensitive (e.g. mv instead of kv). The instrument has comprehensive overload protection (see section 5.7) that is very effective against this type of mistake over all ranges and without involving the blowing of any fuses. Application of the full mains voltage to any range does not damage the instrument. In spite of the excellent protection functions it is good experimental practice to avoid unintentionally exceeding the measurement ranges. To achieve this, it is important to note the scale sequence. 0, 0 3, 0 0, 0 30, 0 00, 0 0 0, 0 (kω) This sequence can be seen at the back of the instrument, where a yellow mark indicates the range that is switched in at present. If you then take into account that the scale with the next largest range is switched in with the switch / from above and the next lowest range is switched in from below, then incorrect selection can be almost eliminated. Unintentional switching to the kv scale cannot be made, because the appropriate range is only switched in when the kω position is also selected with the switch 3/7. In addition the instrument is also proof against mains voltage even in the kv range. For example, in order to switch from the V measurements range into the 300 mv range without exceeding the fullscale pointer deflection the following procedure is used: First switch the scale in the following stages: 0 3, 0 0, 0 30, 0 00, Then switch to the mv range. 3
4 Important: Rotation of the switches and cannot be reversed in the intermediate positions between two scales once it has begun (blocking). Always turn the switch far enough until the next scale audibly latches in; you can then select rotation in either of the directions. The instrument can also be operated and read from the back. The digital display indicates the measurement directly in the unit selected with the switches 3/7. The three figure digital display with floating point and arithmetic sign is always only partially exploited within the scale ranges displayed on the front. If the full-scale deflection is exceeded, the digital display indicates the correct measurement up to the limits stated in the following table: Resistance values cannot be read in the digital display; the indication is in this case proportional to the pointer deflection (full-scale value: 300 ). 5.5 Correct measurement of unsmoothed pulsating DC voltages and currents When measuring pulsating DC currents and voltages as obtained from normal variable transformers with rectifiers, moving coil instruments are subject to a basic measurement error. They indicate the mean value instead of the rms (rootmean-square) value. This mean value is almost exactly % lower than the rms value for a pulsating DC voltage obtained through a bridge rectifier. The ADM 2 behaves in the same manner in the Direct current operating mode. However, the instrument enables the exact measurement of the rms value of pulsating DC voltages and currents. Simply switch the instrument to the ~ mode. With sinusoidal pulsating measurement signals the instrument indicates the exact rms value. The exact rms value is obtained even with distorted sinusoidal signals. (For pure DC currents you should however always set switch 8/5 into the DC position, because the measurement accuracy will be otherwise reduced.) 5.6 Measurement of non-sinusoidal AC voltages and currents For the measurement of AC voltages and currents they are rectified in the ADM 2 by a true RMS-DC converter. This method has the advantage that exact rms values can be displayed even with signals which deviate substantially from a sinewave. For signals with a crest factor (i.e. ratio of peak value/rms value) of 6 the shape of the curve has almost no effect on the measurement result. If, for example in AC circuits with a dimmer as power regulator, you find that the indication on your ADM 2 deviates significantly from traditional measurement instruments, then this is because these instruments can only correctly measure undistorted sinewave voltages. 5.7 Overload protection The instrument has a number of protection devices to protect it from damage under almost all possible faults. The V connection (socket 4) is not only proof against mains voltages on all ranges, but is also protected by a gas discharge gap up to kv. For voltages that are non-hazardous to human contact, the protection function is effective up to 0 kv. A voltage can be regarded as non-hazardous if it meets the following requirements (corresponding to norm EN 600-): the values are smaller than 33 V rms for alternating voltage, or smaller than 70 V for direct voltage, or the current (at termination with 2 kω) is lower than 2 ma for direct current, or the value for a capacitive load is smaller than 45 µc (holds for U<5 kv), or the value for stored energy is smaller than 350 mj (holds for U>5 kv). E.g. the PHYWE high voltage power supplies and follow these limits. All current measurement ranges and the kω range can be permanently subjected to the full AC mains voltage of 230 V without having to replace any fuses. With overloads on the current measurement ranges over extended periods, a 4
5 thermal cut-out temporarily interrupts the measurement circuit. After a cooling period of a few minutes, the current measurement function is automatically re-established. 5.8 Voltage measurement: behavior with open input When used to measure voltages, the analogue demonstration multimeter is characterized through an extremely high input resistance. Even in the most sensitive voltage range ( mv), this is 0 MΩ. Exact voltage measurements can only be carried out if the source resistance is smaller than the input resistance by at least a factor of 0; due to this, the instrument offers a multitude of new possibilities, especially for measuring small voltages with high source resistance. For the same reason, it cannot be excluded that the open input is charged. You should thus not be worried if the pointer, especially in the more sensitive regions, is not exactly on zero and is somewhat restless. To check zero, please short-circuit the input. 6 TECHNICAL DATA Display system: moving coil mechanism Display at back: 3-figure LCD with floating point and arithmetic sign Accuracy: class.5 Position in use: vertical Electrical safety: class 2 protection (DIN/VDE 04) Test voltage: 4 kv Rectifier principle: rms value (true RMS-DC converter) Frequency range: 5 Hz khz (0 A: 45 Hz 400 Hz) Additional error: up to 2 khz ± % up to 20 khz ± 2.5 % Signal shape: any Formal error for Crest factor 6: 0.5 % of display Setting time ~: < 4 s Energy supply: 3 Mono-cells.5 V, IEC R20 Battery service life: 400 operating hours Dimensions (mm): 300 x 85 x 378 Weight: 6.4 kg 7 WARRANTY We guarantee the instrument supplied by us for a period of 24 months within the EU, or for 2 months outside of the EU.
