The dynamic characteristics of the cable-stayed bridge identified by using the continuous wavelet transform algorithm. The modal parameters identified from the field measurement will be compared with those used in the finite element analysis. A comparison of the identified results with the finite element results shows a reasonable match for first five modes in three directions, respectively, vertical, transverse, and torsional directions. Then, the rational FE model of Kao Ping Hsi cable-stayed bridge can be established. Finally, a nonlinear analytical procedure in time domain can be employed to obtain the buffeting response of the cable-stayed bridge by using rational FE model. KEYWORDS: BUFFETING, CABLE-STAYED BRIDGE, FIELD MEASUREMENT, MODAL INENTIFICATION, WAVELET TRANSFORM Introduction It is the most important issue to ensure the safety level of existing long span cable-stayed bridges against induced vibrations from traffic, wind and earthquakes. The object of this safety in service stage can be achieved if the dynamic characteristics of the bridge are accurately determined. Experimental modal analysis is a technique that estimates the modal parameters, such as natural frequencies, damping ratios, and modal shapes. Field vibration test is the most reliable means for determining the dynamic characteristics of an existing bridge. The results obtained in a field test can be used to improve the finite element model used, to evaluate the rationality of the original design, or to assess the damage occurring on a bridge after a major wind and earthquake (Chen et al 997). The ambient vibration test appears to be an easy, practical, and economic one; it is most popular because it utilized natural forces, including the wind, normal traffic or environmental noise, as the input (Chen 25). Basically, two primary approaches have been used to perform the system identification. Identification techniques in the frequency domain are widely recognized as easy, but do not accurately calculate the spectra for highly damped systems. Furthermore, the system identification in time domain can be provided accurate results if the measured signals are pure with low noise (Huang 2). Over the past two decades, an advanced time-frequency algorithm method, called wavelet transform, has been developed in the theoretical aspect. Various identification techniques for identifying modal parameter of a

2 The Seventh Asia-Pacific Conference on Wind Engineering, November 82, 29, Taipei, Taiwan linear system have been developed based on discrete wavelet transform or continuous wavelet transform (Huang and Su 27). In this work, an efficient technique for identifying dynamic characteristics of a cablestayed bridge from the data collected in an ambient vibration test using the continuous wavelet transform. Then, a rationally analytical model of the Kao Ping Hsi cable-stayed bridge will be established. The dynamic response of the cable-stayed bridge under wind loads can be obtained by using a nonlinear analytical procedure in time domain. Bridge Description The tested bridge is the Kao Ping Hsi cable-stayed bridge with an inverse Y-shaped reinforced concrete. This bridge is crossing the middle stream of Kao Ping Hsi, which connects Tashu Village at Kaohsiung County and Chiuru Village at Pingtung County. The bridge was open to traffic on December 3, 999. As shown in Fig., this bridge is asymmtric single tower cable-stayed bridge. The bridge has a main span of 33m, and has a side span of 8m. The inverse Y-shaped pylon has a height of 83.5m from the foundation to the top of pylon. An ideal structural system for an asymmetric cable-stayed bridge is a hybrid system, utilizing different materials for main span and side span in order to balance the system on both sides. Therefore, the side span was built by heavier concrete material, and the main span using lighter steel. A total of 3 sets of cables arranged in two planes are used to connect the girders to the pylon. To identify the modal shapes of the bridge, a total 33 measurement stations on the deck in the vertical and transverse directions were adapted. Figure shows Measurement stations were setup near each cable anchor position and pier position on the deck. In addition, several measurement stations were chosen on between F and Pier 2, and between B4 and F4. Sixteen highly sensitive sensors of the servo velocity type were used to measure the ambient vibration response of the deck. The resolution can reach the level of -4 cm/s. The record

3 The Seventh Asia-Pacific Conference on Wind Engineering, November 82, 29, Taipei, Taiwan system is a PC-based portable data acquisition system with 6 channels, which can convert the analogue signals to digital data and restore the measurement data. Because of the limited number of channels that can be simultaneously used during testing, the deck was divided into three segments, as shown in Fig.. All the responses were recorded for a period of ten minutes at a sampling rate of Hz, implying that 6 data points were recorded in vertical direction across all the measurement stations. It should be noted that the points of overlap at the th and 2 th stations in the main span, and the 2 th and 22 th stations in side span, were used as the bases for linking the data recorded from adjacent segments. Experimental Set-up in Trosional Direction Using Structural Monitoring System The structural health monitoring system is a basis for research on the dynamic behiaviour of Kao Ping Hsi cable-stayed bridge under wind and seismic loads. A simple structural monitoring system was installed to record data that can be used to monitor and assess bridge deck vibrations under wind and traffic loads. Six highly sensitive sensors of the servo velocity type are installed within the box girder. As shown in Fig. 2, the sensors were placed on the two sections of main span, namely, the center of main span and the 2/3 length of main span. The dynamic response of box girder can be measured in two vertical directions and one transverse direction on each section. The data can be recorded simultaneously for long term monitoring at a sampling rate of Hz. The dynamic response of cable-stayed bridge in the trosional direction can be obtained by using the two vertical responses measured on the same section. Because of the limited number of sensors, The modal shape of torsional direction can not determine by the array of installation locations in Fig. 2. Thus, the torsional mode address to identifiy the natural frequencies with corresponding danping ratios. 4 The Seventh Asia-Pacific Conference on Wind Engineering, November 82, 29, Taipei, Taiwan Experimental Modal analysis Continuous Wavelet Transform Techniques The continuous wavelet transform applied to the measured dynamic responses of a cable-stayed bridge. The discrete linear equations of motion among the measured degrees of freedom are then established in the wavelet domain. Several fixed values of the scale parameter in the transformation can be adopted to filter out the measured noise. Based on the equivalence relationship, the traditional least squares approach has been proposed to determine the characteristic coefficients in the discrete domain. Consequently, the dynamic characteristics of a structure can be determined directly from those coefficients by solving eigenvalue problem. In the wavelet function selection, the Meyer wavelet function is applied to identify the modal parameters. The Meyer wavelet, as shown in Fig. 3, is defined in the frequency domain as (Daubechies 992) jw e sin jw ˆ e cos () where a a a7a 2 2 a 3 2 8, 3 3, and [, ]. is a dilation or scale parameter, which is typically a positive real and plays role of the inverse of frequency. The Meyer wavelet and its Fourier modulus are depicted in Fig. 3. The Meyer function is compactly supported in the frequency domain and smoothes out the discontinuity of the Shannon wavelet function t.5 ^ f time(sec) 2 3 frequency(hz) (a) (b) Figure 3: Meyer wavelet function and its Fourier modulus: (a) time domain; (b) frequency domain Data Processing and Identification Results The typical auto-spectra were illustrated in Fig. 4. The velocity data recorded from the ambient vibration test and structural monitoring system were processed using the wavelet transform. The natural frequencies and modal damping ratios of the first five modes in the vertical and transverse directions determined from the ambient vibration test were listed in Table and Table 2, respectively, while the corresponding modal shapes shown in Fig. 5. The identifying results in the torsional direction lists Table 3. For such a long span cable-stayed bridge, however, the frequency range of interest lies below 2 Hz. As can be seen, the frequencies of lower modes identified in those tables correspond very well with those associated with the peaks of the auto-spectra shown in Fig. 4. The modal damping ratios identified from the ambient vibration test are much smaller than the design value of 5 percent. Besides, cable-stayed bridges are usually designed to have the natural frequency of the first

5 The Seventh Asia-Pacific Conference on Wind Engineering, November 82, 29, Taipei, Taiwan torsional mode higher than that of the first vertical mode. As shown in Table and Table 3, the ratio of first torsional frequency to the first vertical frequency is Based on the fultter analysis, the higher frequency ratio indicates that the wind resistant of Kao Ping Hsi cablestayed bridge is most suitable. The 3-D finite element model is used to simulate the Kao Ping Hsi cable-stayed bridge. For comparison, the first five natural frequencies computed was also listed in Table and Table 2, for which the dominant direction of vibration is determined by the maximum component of each eigenvector. The modal shapes obtained from the finite element analysis were also plotted in Fig. 5, which appear to be similar to the measured ones. Table and Table 2 present the MAC value for the modal shapes in Fig. 5 obtained in the ambient vibration test and finite element analysis. As can be seen, generally good correlation exists between the two sets of modal shapes. Herein, the finite element model can be established rationally for Kao Ping Hsi cable-stayed bridge. log Amp Z-St.(F4) Z-St.(F5) Z-St.(F6) Freq. (Hz) log Amp Y-St.(F4) Y-St.(F5) Y-St.(F6) Freq. Base on target frequency spectra, an autoregressive (AR) model approach is used to generate real-time data of buffeting forces (Lin and Lieu 23). The flutter derivatives can be used to represent self-excited forces by Scanlan and Tomko (97). The flutter derivatives measured from section model tests are dependent on the reduced oscillation frequency only, regardless of amplitude. This assumption is adopted here in order to use the same set of flutter derivatives in the time domain. A static analysis with the dead loads and static wind forces should be performed before the dynamic buffeting analysis. The effects of geometric nonlinearities should be considered on the finite element model of cable-stayed bridge. A nonlinear static analysis followed by linear dynamic analysis, called a nonlinear-linear analysis, is the most common analysis method in practice. Based on the present nonlinear dynamic analysis, the deflections of the deck in the three directions, namely, the vertical, transverse, and torsional directions, have been plotted in Fig. 6. For comparison, the results calculated from the frequency domain are also shown in Fig. 6. From those figure, it can be seen that the results calculated from these two domains are in good agreement. Therefore, the present time domain method is verified and thus it is applicable to the buffeting analysis of cable-stayed bridges.

The first five modes in each direction were identified for the bridge from the results recorded during the ambient vibration test. A comparison of the identified results with the finite element results shows a reasonable match for the first five modes. Further, a dynamic analysis was carried out to determine buffetimg response of cable-stayed bridge. Comparison the results from time domain method with those from frequency domain approach, the time domain analysis is proved to be valid and rational. The results obtained herein will be used as the
