3 WP1: Fundamental limits of wireless networks with interference Some Aalto topics: Codebook (CB) design for CoMP Fundamental bounds for precoding on Stiefel manifold Algebraic framework for creating large precoding codebooks Vector quantization for CBs performing simultaneous directional precoding (Grassmannian) and orthogonalization Characterization of the research: The work in WP was mainly basic research where aim was to achieve fundamental theoretical principles, justified by solid mathematical analysis Work was carried out by Renauld-Alexander Pitaval in research group of Prof. Olav Tirkkonen.

4 WP2: Decentralised radio network optimisation Aalto topics: Distributed beamforming for dense deployments in case of limited feedback. Special focus on clusters of local low power transmitters Design and analysis of practical limited feedback beamforming (precoding) methods Characterization of the research: The work was mainly basic research but our goal was to find principles that can be used when designing cooperative methods in ultra dense networks Work was carried out by Turo Halinen and Alexis Dowhuszko in the research group of Prof. Jyri Hämäläinen

5 WP2: System model for distributed BF Generalized system model composed by a main transmitter, a main receiver, and a cluster of relaying network elements (around main transmitter) Communication in the first hop assumed costless The feedback link between main receiver and relaying cluster enables the implementation of a DBF scheme in second hop

6 WP3: Interference statistics aware resource management Aalto topics: Power allocation, interference modeling, control and avoidance in cognitive radio networks, Special focus on systems that employ TV white space. Example problem: Estimate interference from random access networks to some incumbent system. Possible application in primary-secondary setup, co-primary shared access and license shared access Characterization of the research: Both basic and applied research done where goal was to find principles for credible interference modeling and means to reliably estimate the interference between secondary and primary TV WS system Work was carried out by Konstantinos Koufos and Byungjin Cho in the research group of Prof. Riku Jäntti
