Core Area of Impact: Multi-tenant data centers are growing to handle demands, and central office/data centers are moving to new technologies to achieve efficiencies and optimize the networks Central Office/Head End Or Data Center 10G, 40G, 100G The path to 400G Ethernet continues... Percent of Server Shipments % 50G Active Optical Cables Increasing bandwidth requirements and huge DC deployments are likely to drive AOC. MM to SM Moving from multimode fiber to single mode in the DC means higher capacity connections Data Center Central Office Growth in MTDC The global MTDC and wholesale DC market is to grow at 13% CAGR between due to growth in data. Cloud By 2020, 92% of workloads will be processed by cloud DCs 3. With increasing investments in virtualization (NFV, SDN) the CO will look more like a DC. Silicon Photonics Data transfer among computer chips by optical rays, over single mode fiber. Low-cost, high-speed optics over duplex SM drives demand for SM fiber and drives duplex away from parallel. Leaf Spine Architecture For lower latency, higher throughput and dynamic routing 7 P R I V A T E A N D C O N F I D E N T I A L C o m m S c o p e, I n c

Central Offices will transform into hybrid facilities, introducing datacenter architectures to support NFV, CloudRAN and Edge Computing Typical NFV infrastructure : 2 1. OCP racks with Servers and Storage 2. Fabric leaf and spine switches Interface to access network, fixed or wireless (includes volt) 4. Interface to core network VNF infrastructure sizes still uncertain, tend to be compact (1 to 4 racks) but will evolve over time, as demands increase. Central Office Legacy Equipment High Speed IO Leading Architecture & terminology VNF POD PNF ROADM Core Network Next Generation Central Office Integrated Cloud Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter VNF VNF ODF Low Speed IO GPON OLT Access Network Cloud Central Office 13 P R I V A T E A N D C O N F I D E N T I A L C o m m S c o p e, I n c

CO Edge DC POD Deployment Challenges Core and Access Networks are critical long term investments that remain and grow as key elements of a Central Office Virtual Network Function (VNF) pods will be inserted within an existing Central Office Some functions will be new, some will replace existing, not all functions will be virtualized Pods will come and go, the core network and access network will last far longer Size requirements highly uncertain pods will likely evolve by adding 1 rack at a time. Hardware lifecycle will be shortened (Moore s law still applies!), different generations of servers need to coexist using different communication speeds, inside the same leaf-spine fabric. Pod Fabric and Core connectivity is critical! - Day 1 speed vs. future requirements - Very different from DC where full pod is deployed at once!! Other CO challenges include: - Heating and cooling - Powering - Fire Suppression - Security 14 P R I V A T E A N D C O N F I D E N T I A L C o m m S c o p e, I n c

Other Trends Driving Central Office Evolution Mobile Edge Computing Businesses and Consumers require lower latency for video and voice applications By % of cloud servers will be deployed in Edge locations 2 Latency and bandwidth volume drive move to Edge Proliferation of dense, small-scale facilities Network Convergence, 5G RAN Evolution Densification Centralization Virtualization 15 P R I V A T E A N D C O N F I D E N T I A L C o m m S c o p e, I n c

Central Office Evolution 16 P R I V A T E A N D C O N F I D E N T I A L C o m m S c o p e, I n c

Central Office Transformation Best Practices 1. Separate NFV infrastructure from legacy central office Enables energy efficient power and cooling solution. Ability to manage security and access for different teams. 2. Use a modular approach: start small, expand when needed. Requirements will change! Typical CO deployments sizes expected to be 1-6 racks. Updates of equipment more frequent; shorter hardware lifecycle for IT servers and storage. Equipment comes in 1 rack at a time, and needs to plug into the leaf-spine fabric. 3. Use a structured cabling design with clear demarcation to connect VNF pod and legacy CO-ODF Easily expand or upgrade NFV infrastructure, whilst maintaining the integrity of the leaf-spine fabric. Separation of responsibilities between different teams (IT & actives vs. OSP-legacy main ODF) Prepare for high speed migration G / G. Use multi-fiber links. Manage documentation well, consider automation 17 P R I V A T E A N D C O N F I D E N T I A L C o m m S c o p e, I n c
