Checking Phase Current The displayed phase current accuracy can examined using the following procedure: If motor is running, examine readings on relay display under Actual Values Page #1. The display will look as follows I1= XXXX I2= XXXX I3= XXXX (AMPS) --- Check to see if these currents are within the specification listed on the previous page. Attach a clamp-on current meter to the secondary of the CTs. With this value, we can ascertain what the primary current readings should be. The calculation is as follows: Displayed Current = Measured Secondary Current x (Phase CT Primary / Phase CT secondary) If the Phase currents displayed do not match what you have calculated, contact the Service Dept... for more info at (905) /4/98 4
Communications Serial Communication Link Wiring 11/4/98 5
Communications Type: RS485 2-wire, half duplex, isolated Baud Rate: 300, 1200, 2400 Protocol: Subset of Modbus RTU Functions: Read / Write setpoints (03/16) Read actual values (03/ 04) RS485 communications was chosen to be used with the 269 Plus because it allows communications over long distances of up to 4000 ft. However, care must be taken for it to operate properly and trouble free. The recommendations listed below must be followed to obtain reliable communications: a) A twisted, shielded pair (preferably a 24 gage Belden 9841 type or 120ohm equivalent) must be used, and routed away from power carrying cables, such as power supply and CT cables. b) No more than 32 devices (269 Plus's, PQM's, or any other non-multilin device that communicates using the same protocol) can co-exist on the same link. If however, more than 32 devices should be daisy chained together, a REPEATER must be used. The shields of all 269 Plus units should also be daisy chained together and grounded at the MASTER (PC/PLC) only. This is due to the fact that if shields are grounded at different points, a potential difference between grounds might exist, which can result in placing one or more 269 Plus transceiver chips (chip used for communications) in an unknown state, i.e... not receiving nor sending, and the corresponding 269 Plus communications might be erroneous, intermittent or unsuccessful. 11/4/98 6
c) Two sets of 120ohm/0. 25W resistor and 1nF/50V capacitor in series must be used (value matches the characteristic impedance of the line). One set at the 269 Plus end, connected between the positive and negative terminals (#46 & #47 on 269 Plus) and the second at the other end of the communications link. This is to prevent reflections and ringing on the line. If a different value resistor is used, it runs the risk of over loading the line and communications might be erroneous, intermittent or totally unsuccessful. d) It is highly recommended that connection from the 269 Plus communication terminals be made directly to the interfacing Master Device (PC/PLC/DCS), without the use of any stub lengths. This is also to minimize ringing and reflections on the line. Multilin SCI & F485 RS232/RS485 converters have been fully tested with the 269PLUS relay. Third party converters are available, however they may not function the same due to possible timing issues. The 269PLUS will allow you to address up to 254 slaves in Setpoints Page #5- Slave Address = x. This essential for the master to determine the device that it is communicating with. 11/4/98 7
RS485 Communications Failure Check Ensure that the 269PLUS is powered on. Check Slave Address on Setpoints Page #5. It must match the address that the master is trying to communicate with. Ensure the communication wiring is connected as shown on Page #3 and that no wires are loose or shorting out. The 232/485 converter must be showing the Transmit & DTR LED flashing. If not, no Data Packets are being received by the 269PLUS and there may be a problem with the Converter configuration or the Master configuration. The Master baud rate must be set at 2400 ( This is the default- contact factory if alternate baud rate is required) Ensure you are using a 10 Bit Data Packet with 1 start bit, 8 data bits, and one stop bit. If you are trying to communicate with a PLC or DCS, visit our website at for a list of PLCs we have interfaced with, as well as any other items required to achieve a successful connection. If none of the above suggestions provide a solution, contact Technical Support for more information at (905) /4/98 8
RTDs sensor types: RTD Inputs 10 OHM copper 100 OHM nickel 120 OHM nickel 100 OHM platinum (specified with order) display accuracy: ± 2 C trip/alarm setpoint range: C dead band: 3 C maximum lead resistance: 25% of RTD 0 C resistance RTD Connections 11/4/98 9
RTD Connections a) Use a 3 wire twisted, shielded pair to connect the RTDs from the motor to the 269 Plus. The shields should be connected to the proper terminals on the back of the 269 Plus. b) RTD shields are internally connected to the 269 Plus ground (terminal #42) and must not be grounded anywhere else. c) RTD signals can be characterized as very small, sensitive signals. Therefore, cables carrying RTD signals should be routed away from power carrying cables such as power supply and CT cables. d) If, after wiring the RTD leads to the 269 Plus, the RTD temperature displayed by the Relay is zero, then check for the following conditions: 1 - shorted RTD / cabling 2 - RTD hot and compensation leads are reversed, i.e. hot lead in compensation terminal and compensation lead in hot terminal. 3 - There is no compensation lead connected. (I.e- only using a hot and return wire) ******If two wires are to be used with the RTDs, there must be a jumper placed from the Return to the Compensation. This type of connection is not recommended for 10Cu RTDs. 11/4/98 10
RTD Measurements Test The correct operation of each of the RTD inputs can be tested by simulating RTDs with potentiometers. To test a 269 Plus relay configured for use with 100 OHM platinum RTDs, 100 OHM potentiometers and resistors can be used. These should be connected to each RTD as shown below. Page #12 shows RTD resistance for various temperatures. Individual, actual stator and bearing RTD temperatures can be viewed in ACTUAL VALUES mode, page 2. Viewing RTD temperatures on this page, requires a period of 11 secs. to update the screen with the temperature. To force the 269 to read a specific RTD, without the delay, use setpoint Page #6. Once at that page, press the Line down key until you see the following: TEMPERATURE = XXXXXXXXXXXXX FORCED RTD # X Press the value up key until the desired RTD is shown. To test overtemperature trip/alarm functions the simulated RTD potentiometers should be adjusted to correspond to high RTD temperatures. Stator RTD Voting in Setpoint Values page 5 should be defeated first. This allows for individual trip/alarm overtemperature reading. 11/4/98 11

The display will look as follows GROUND FAULT CURRENT G/F = XX.X AMPS Check to see if this current is within the specification listed on the previous page. Attach a clamp-on current meter to the secondary of the CTs. With this value, we can ascertain what the primary current readings should be. The calculation is as follows: Displayed Current = Measured Secondary Current x (Ground Fault CT Primary / Ground Fault CT secondary) If the Ground Fault current displayed does not match what you have calculated, contact the Service Dept... for more info at (905) /4/98 14

Switch Inputs The 269Plus relay has 6 dry contact inputs To test the operation of the 269 Plus switch inputs and the connected equipment, the "Status = xxxxxx" setpoint in page 6 of SETPOINTS mode can be used. *****This may cause a trip if the motor is running Connect a switch or a short across the inputs you wish to check. Press The SETPOINTS Page #6 key, then press PAGE down until you see the following message: PAGE 6 : SETPOINT VALUES MULTILIN SERVICE CODES Press the LINE down until the following message is shown: STATUS = XXXXXXXX FOR: XXXXX SWITCH Press the VALUE up key until the required input is shown. This will allow you to view the status of the hardware inputs. This process can be repeated for all inputs. If there is no response to the shorting of an input (i.e.- Short), verify the terminals that are shorted. If problem still persists, contact the factory at (905) /4/98 18
