1 1 ADVANCE PRODUCT SERVICE INFORMATION SUBJECT: OPERATING PROCEDURES FOR EXTECH DIGITAL MULTIMETER No: #66 DATE: 05/31/2010 MODELS: DIGITAL MULTIMETER A digital multimeter is necessary for electrical testing of Briggs & Stratton products. Briggs & Stratton has recently introduced a new digital multimeter. The EXTECH Digital Multimeter Model MA220 is a 400 Amp /DC clamp meter. This meter measures /DC Current, /DC Voltage, Resistance, Capacitance, Frequency, Duty Cycle, Temperature, Diode Testing, and Continuity. The EXTECH Digital Multimeter is protected against overvoltage surges. This meter does not contain a fuse. The EXTECH Digital Multimeter is available from your Briggs & Stratton source of supply. It is listed under Part Number The specifications, part numbers, and/or operating procedures presented here are preliminary and subject to change. 2 Safety Instructions OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS EXTECH Digital Multimeter MA220 WARNING Meter ratings and capabilities vary by manufacturer. Before working with a new meter, be sure to familiarize yourself with all operating and safety procedure for the meter contained in the operator s manual. NOTICE: Read and understand all WARNING and CAUTION statements listed in the safety section prior to using the meter. Set the function select switch to the OFF position when the meter is not in use. Do not exceed the maximum allowable input range of any function. Do not connect meter to voltage when resistance function is selected. Set the function switch OFF when the meter is not in use. Remove the battery if the meter is to be stored for longer than 60 days. Set function select switch to the appropriate position before measuring. When measuring volts, do not switch to current or resistance modes. When changing ranges using the selector switch, always disconnect the test leads from the circuit under test. Inspect for wear or damage before each use. If the meter or the test leads look damaged, DO NOT use the meter. Always keep your fi ngers behind the fi nger guards on the probe when making measurements. 3 Auto/Manual Ranging The meter turns on in Autoranging mode. If desired, press the RANGE button to override the meter to allow for manual ranging. Each press of the range button will step to the next range as indicated by the units and decimal point location. Press and hold the RANGE button for two seconds to return to Autoranging mode. NOTE: Manual ranging does not function in Current or Diode and Continuity check functions. In the Temperature function, it will change the resolution from 0.1 to 1. Data Hold To freeze the LCD meter reading, press the HOLD button. While the data hold is active, the HOLD display icon appears on the LCD. Press the HOLD button again to return to normal operation. Backlight Press and hold the HOLD button for about 2 seconds to turn the backlight On/Off. NOTE: The HOLD feature will activate when the backlight is turned on. Press the HOLD button again to exit the HOLD feature. ZERO button The ZERO button is able to clear Capacitance and DC Current measurements. The ZERO button allows the user to offset the meter by using the displayed value as the zero reference value. Press the ZERO button momentarily to activate and to exit the zero mode. Operation DC/ Current Measurements - Figure 2 NOTICE: Disconnect the test leads from the meter before making current clamp measurements. 1. Set the function select switch to the 400ADC, 40ADC, 400A, or the 40A range. 2. For DC Current measurement, press the ZERO button (A) to clear the meter display. - NOTE: When measuring DC current, the front of the meter must face the positive side of the power source. An inaccurate reading will occur if the front of the meter is not facing the positive side of the power source. When measuring current, the polarity does not matter. 3. Press the trigger to open jaw. Fully enclose the conductor being measured. 4. The measurement will display on the LCD screen. + A A A Figure 2 3

4 DC/ Voltage Measurements - Figure 3 NOTICE: For DC Volts application: When connecting test leads to the power source, connect the negative cable LAST. When removing, disconnect negative cable FIRST. 1. Set the function select switch to the Volts/Hz/% position. 2. Insert the BLK test lead into the COM (negative) 3. Insert the RED test lead into the V/Ω/Temp (positive) 4. Push mode button to select or DC. 5. Touch the test leads to the circuit across a load or power source (in parallel to the circuit). 6. The measurement will display on the LCD screen. NOTE: To ensure correct polarity when measuring DC Voltage, touch the RED test probe to the positive side of the circuit, and the BLK test probe to the negative side of the circuit or to ground. mv DC DC mv Resistance Measurements - Figure 4 CAUTION Resistance measurements must be made with the circuit power OFF. Failure to turn off power to the circuit could result in damage to the meter or to the circuit being tested. Figure 3 1. Turn off power to the circuit and isolate the component being tested from the circuit. 2. Set the function select switch to the Ohms (Ω) position. 3. Insert the BLK test lead into the COM (negative) 4. Insert the RED test lead into the V/Ω/Temp (positive) 5. Touch the probe tips across the component or portion of the circuit for which you want to determine resistance. 6. The measurement will display on the LCD screen. MΩ MΩ Figure 4 4

5 Continuity Measurements - Figure 5 1. Turn off power to the circuit. 2. Set the function select switch to the Ohms (Ω) position. 3. Insert the BLK test lead into the COM (negative) receptacle in meter. 4. Insert the RED test lead into the V/Ω/Temp (positive) receptacle in meter. 5. Touch the probe tips across the component or portion of the circuit for which you want to determine resistance. An O displayed on the LCD screen, indicates no resistance to current fl ow, and that the switch is good. OL displayed on the LCD screen, indicates open loop which signifi es the resistance has a measure of infi nity, and that the switch is bad. MΩ MΩ Diode Test - Figure 6 This mode measures and displays the actual voltage drop across a junction. 1. Turn off power to the circuit. 2. Determine the polarity of the diode that is being tested. 3. Set the function select switch to the Ohms (Ω) position. 4. Insert the BLK test lead into the COM (negative) 5. Insert the RED test lead into the V/Ω/Temp (positive) 6. Press the MODE button until the Diode symbol is displayed. 7. Touch the probe tips across the component or portion of the circuit for which you want to test. If meter beeps once, the diode is OK. If meter makes a continuous tone, diode is shorted. Replace diode. If meter displays OL, proceed to Step Reverse test leads. If meter beeps once, diode is installed backwards. Replace diode. If meter displays OL, diode is open. Replace diode. 6 Capacitance Measurements - Figure 7 WARNING Electric Shock Hazard. Disconnect power to the unit under test and discharge all capacitors before taking any capacitance measurements. Remove the batteries. Unplug the power cords. Discharge the capacitor before testing. Isolate the capacitor from the circuit. NOTE: Some capacitors may be polarity sensitive. Determine correct polarity before testing. 1. Turn off power to the unit being tested. 2. Set the function select switch to the Ohms (Ω) position. 3. Push the MODE button to indicate nf on the display. 4. Insert the BLK test lead into the COM (negative) 5. Insert the RED test lead into the V/Ω/Temp (positive) 6. Press the ZERO button to clear the meter display. 7. Touch the meter test leads to the capacitor being tested. 8. Read the capacitance value on the display. Figure 7 nf Frequency or % Duty Cycle Measurements - Figure 8 1. Set the function select switch to the Volts/Hz/% position. 2. Insert the BLK test lead into the COM (negative) 3. Insert the RED test lead into the V/Ω/Temp (positive) 4. Press the Hz% button to select Hz or %. 5. Turn on power to the circuit. 6. Touch the test leads to the circuit being tested. 7. 7 Temperature Measurements - Figure 9 WARNING Electric Shock Hazard. Always remove the thermocouple from the receptacles in meter before changing to another measurement function. 1. Set the function select switch to the TEMP position. 2. Insert the temperature probe into the COM (negative) and the V/Ω/Temp (positive) receptacles in the meter. 3. Push the MODE button to select C or F. 4. Touch the temperature probe head to the part being tested. Keep the probe touching the part until the reading stabilizes. 5. The temperature will display on the LCD screen. 000 C F 000 F C Maintenance WARNING Electric Shock Hazard. When performing maintenance on the meter disconnect the meter from all circuits. Remove the test leads fro the input terminals and place meter in the OFF position before opening the case. DO NOT operate the meter with the case open. Cleaning Periodically wipe the case with a clean, damp cloth. DO NOT use abrasives or solvents to clean the meter. Storage If the meter is not to be used for periods of longer than 60 days, remove the batteries and store them separately. Figure 9 Inspection Inspect for damage. If the meter or the test leads look damaged, DO NOT use the meter. Battery Replacement 1. Place meter in the OFF position. 2. Remove the two phillips screws on the back of the meter. 3. Open the battery compartment. 4. Replace the two (2) 1.5V AAA batteries. 5. Close the battery compartment and install the screws.
