INTRODUCTION In the SMG2 Plenary meeting (No:24) in Cork (1-5 Dec.97), Delta concept group introduced a new pulse shape filter discussed in Tdoc 415/97, A improved pulse shaping for the DELTA concept. In a second document released by Delta group, Tdoc 414/97, titled Guard Band Analysis for TD-CDMA, guard band analysis of TD-CDMA concept is presented, based on the new pulse shape. In this document the channel spacing of the modified system is stated as 1.2MHz, with the rate of Mchips/s. The 44% reduction (2.167Mcps/1.2MHz) in spectrum occupancy of signal causes only a modest 3dB peak-to-mean (stated as Peak-to Average Ratio PAR) transmit power envelope variation. As originally perceived the 44% bandwidth reduction is NOT achieved by the new pulse shape (see appendix I). In fact the new pulse shape offers less spectral efficiency than. The 44% bandwidth reduction is as a result of OQPSK, which is accompanied by 3dB loss in the processing gain of the spread-spectrum component of TD-CDMA system. This loss of processing gain will impact the system at all levels. For example, channel estimation is based on matched-filter correlation. A 3dB loss of processing gain in an interference limited environment, would mean a 3dB reduction in the C/I, proportionally reducing the accuracy of such correlation based operation. This type of degradation could result to: I) An increase in the minimum reuse factor required for satisfactory operation, reducing the spectral efficiency of the cellular system. II) Reduction in the supportable number of users, leading to a fractional loading of approximately 5% of the stated system capacity. III) Reduction in the ability to support low BER services. IV) Modification of the link-budget, reducing the supportable maximum cell size. The 3dB loss of processing gain would also impact Joint Detection algorithm performance, although the extent is not so clear. In the light of the profound changes (processing gain and pulse shape) in the Delta concept, up-to-date simulation results based on the new modifications are required at every level of the system, physical and radio network, in order to estimate the modification impact on the system performance as a whole. Unfortunately to date such results have not been presented. 2. -VS-OQPSK SPREADING Figure 1 depicts the block diagram of delta concept with the modulated, used before the introduction of OQPSK with the new pulse shape. Since is a binary modulation scheme, the symbol rate after modulation is identical to the data rate at the input to the modulator. However, benefits from MSK modulation with Gaussian pulse shaping, resulting to reduction in spectral occupancy. For example the bandwidth defined for GSM is 271k/1k (one sided spectrum) which is 37% of the information data rate (main lobe) spectrum occupancy. A similar portion 1

Rate = ksymb/s PG = 2.167M/135.41k PG =16 =12dB Data QPSK to Tx Figure 1: Although the defined channel spacing of 1.6 MHz may have been practical for the system operation, the guard-band requirements of the spectrum mask was excessive, hence the new pulse shape with the OQPSK. However the perceived spectral efficiency gain is not as a result of the pulse shape, rather the reduction of 5% has resulted to only 25% reduction in spectral occupancy, and more importantly, 3dB loss of processing gain. Figure 2 shows the new OQPSK scheme and the associated chipping rates and the associated processing gain with OQPSK. 3 The reason why the spread bandwidth is halved with OQPSK, resulting to 3dB loss of processing gain is shown in Figure 3. OQPSK is a quaternary modulation similar to QPSK, with a symbol duration twice as long as the information bit. This results to a symbol rate, at the output of the modulator, equal to half the bit rate at the input of the OQPSK modulator. In the case of the Delta concept, OQPSK reduces the chipping rate by a factor of 2. Figure 4 shows the correlation output for two symbol periods, used for channel estimation with 8 speech users. Comparable results for modulated pulse shapes are included, along with the new OQPSK and the new pulse shape filter used in the Delta concept. 4 3. CONCLUSIONS The Enhanced delta concept with a carrier spacing of 1.2MHz has been proposed by concept group delta. At the first sight the new pulse shaping seems to offer very high bandwidth efficiency with only 3dB peak-to-mean transmit power envelope variations. A closer examination of the new scheme reveals that bandwidth reduction of 5% has been achieved by effectively reducing by a factor of 2, thus reducing the processing gain of the spread spectrum component of TD-CDMA by 3dB. This reduction in processing gain will affect the system performance at every level. The joint detection, as well as the channel estimation algorithms, both depend on the available processing gain. The frequency reuse, link budget and system capacity also depend on the available processing gain. Since the modifications to the delta concept are more than just pulse shaping, and also includes the factor, the modified system has to be looked at thoroughly with all presented results based on the modified system. 4

5 Appendix I: The purpose of this appendix is to illustrate the spectral behaviour of the new pulse shape filter used for the pulses in the Delta concept. To aid the illustrations, modulated and rectangular pulse shapes are also included in the diagrams. For comparison purposes all the three pulse rates are kept the same, at 1 Chip/s. From the power spectrum plot of the three filters (Fig. II), it is evident that the new pulse shaping filter (marked as Sinc-Gassiuan) does NOT offer any spectral advantages compared to that of. In fact it has a broader main lobe than that exhibited by modulated pulses. The reduction in the spectral occupancy of the new scheme of the delta concept has been achieved by the reduction in factor, from to 1.83MChips/s.
