The PCR is a solid-state device designed to simultaneously provide DC isolation and AC continuity/grounding when used with cathodically protected structures, such as pipelines, tanks, grounding systems, and cable casings. The PCR is an ideal replacement for electrochemical polarization cells. In a compact, solid-state package, the PCR has high AC fault current and lightning surge current ratings. With a higher blocking voltage than polarization cells, the PCR eliminates the need for placing devices in series. It also outperforms any metal oxide varistor or gapped arrester, clamping lightning-caused over-voltages to the lowest possible levels. Typical Applications Protection of Insulated Joints DC Isolation from Power Utility Grounding Systems AC Voltage Mitigation on Pipeline Systems AC Grounding/DC Isolation of Electrical Equipment from Station Ground Features & Characteristics Higher Blocking Voltage than Polarization Cells No Maintenance Needed Solid-state, Fail-safe Design No Hazardous Electrolytes UL and CSA Listed for Grounding Electrical Equipment Unlimited Number of Operations Compact Package Ratings 60Hz Ratings DC Voltage Blocking: Lightning Surge Current: -3/+1V (standard) -4/+1V (optional) -2/+2V (optional symmetrical unit) 100,000A crest (8 x 20 µs waveform)

With the SSD line of products, DEI offers decouplers with lower cost and very compact designs. Using proven, solid-state construction, but with new production and packaging techniques, the innovation of the SSD line adds value by lowering the cost of applying protection products to industry. With ratings for AC fault current and lightning, and the ability to pass steady-state AC current, the device outperforms other technologies such as metal oxide varistors, gapped arrestors, and polarization cells. A major application of the SSD is in acting as a "Ground Mat Decoupler," by separating grounding mats from pipelines (to improve cathodic protection) while still providing over-voltage protection for workers. Features and Characteristics Compact, lightweight package Range of AC Fault Ratings Higher Blocking Voltage than Polarization Cells UL and C-UL Listed for Grounding Electrical Equipment UL, C-UL Listed for Class I, Division 2 Locations Certified by UL/Demko for Meeting ATEX Directive for Zone 2; CE Marked Submersible Design
Personnel working near pipelines can be subject to electrical hazards such as lightning, AC fault current/voltage, and steady-state AC induction. "Ground mats" have typically been used at above ground pipeline structures where these hazards exist, but past designs do not provide adequate protection against lightning conditions. DEI now offers an engineered Gradient Control Mat (GCM) to address lightning and AC fault current conditions, backed by analysis from experts in lightning protection and with a full review by Correng Consulting of the cathodic protection guidelines of this mat design. Step and touch potentials are now limited with the DEI grid-type mat, in a much lower cost design. DEI also recommends decoupling gradient control mats to improve CP on the pipeline, and offers the new, affordable Solid-State Decoupler (SSD) line for use in conjunction with the Gradient Control Mat (GCM). Features and Characteristics Low cost design Galvanized steel grid, using 3" x 3" squares Low inductance design limits step and touch potentials due to lightning Decoupling the mat offers long life and improved CP on the pipeline Data available on design life and supplemental anodes.
A decoupling device for fault current service and removal of induced AC power from protected structures If you need cathodic protection, you may need the Kirk Cell. It acts like an "electrochemical switch," blocking DC voltages in the cathodic protection range, while instantaneously shunting hazardous voltages to ground. How the Kirk Cell works The Kirk Cell consists of multiple pairs of stainless steel plates immersed in a potassium hydroxide electrolyte solution. An oil seal floating on the electrolyte prevents evaporation, absorption of atmospheric gasses and excessive foaming under high current flow. DC current flow through the Kirk Cell causes a film of gas to form on the plates, offering high resistance to low voltage DC current. As the applied voltage across the cell increases, current flow through the cell increases, causing the thickness of the polarization gas film to increase. When the leakage threshold is exceeded, the film starts to break down, and the cell resistance quickly decreases as the applied voltage increases. AC voltages and higher DC voltages see the Kirk Cell as a dead short. Suitable for Outdoor Installation Galvanized steel enclosures are offered for exterior installations of the cell, with locking features if desired. The enclosures are also available in 11 gauge, small arms proof construction. Now available, the 5-2/2 and 50-2/2 Dual Enclosures house two Kirk Cells.

Zinc anodes have been used since the 19th century to protect steel structures from corrosion. Today, these anodes are still widely utilized and have proven to be an effective choice for preventing corrosion in select soils and brackish waters. MESA offers standard zinc anodes made to ASTM B-418, Type II standard alloy. These anodes generate an open circuit potential of volts (with respect to a Cu/CuSO4 reference). Made from 99.99% pure high-grade zinc, MESA zinc anodes offer a 90% current efficiency and deliver a current capacity of 335 amp-hours/pound. This high purity composition assures the anodes are more resistant to pacifying films. The preferred zinc anode for underground cathodic protection use conforms to ASTM-B a, Type II. For protecting metallic structures in saline mud or exposed to sea or brackish water, the high amp zinc material should be considered. This allow meets the compositional requirements of Mil-A J and ASTM-B a, Type I. Standard Fabrication MESA zinc anodes are packaged in a cloth bag and centered in a low resistance backfill mixture. The standard backfill mixture consists of 75%hydrated gypsum, 20% bentonite, and 5% sodium sulfate. A 10' coiled lead of #12 TW solid copper wire is silver soldered to the anode core. The connection is then coated with two layers of insulating and plastic electrical tape. Typical Applications Zinc anodes are recommended for use in soils with resistivities below 1,000 ohmcm. Because these anodes have a driving voltage less than magnesium, they are most effective on well-coated steel structures requiring minimal current output. Packaged anodes are commonly used as grounding cells on electrical equipment and across insulators on pipelines to limit high voltages. Typical grounding applications include pipelines, power stations, storage tanks, and transmission line towers and cables. Zinc anodes should not be used in extremely alkaline (above 9.2 ph), acidic (below 5 ph), or high temperature (above 140F) electrolytes.
