6 ELECTRONIC CONTROLS MANUAL Overview The Girard Link System brings to RV user new control technology that was designed to eliminate unnecessary wiring of controls and utilize wireless RF linking to save space, reduce weight and facilitate installation. Some examples of this are: 1. The function of insuring firm closure of the awning is achieved using a Magnetic Sensor with RF remote control rather than a wired in Current Limiting box. 2. The wired Anemometer is replaced with an RF remote unit that will retract up to 20 awnings without any wiring and without the need of special units designed to share a single anemometer with more than two awnings. 3. The automatic retraction of awnings does not require a connection between the ignition circuits and the awnings motor control but is also achieved with no wiring using a single additional RF link. The system consists of several modules that perform specific functions and communicate with each other by transmitting or receiving radio (RF) signals. SYSTEM MOTORS Two types of motors are provided with the G-Link System 1. Standard Motors with manual override 2. Receiver (Radio) motors The Standard Motors require a motor control module to operate with a Remote Control, while the Receivers Motors have a built in Receiver and do not require a motor control module. The variety of motors is used in Girard Systems awnings and we give here a list of the most commonly used units. DC-12V MOTORS RPM AMPS 97DM35DS DM35DS DM45DS

20 Remote Motion Sensor Model GC 135M (Transmitter) The model GC 135M Motion Sensor is used to sense the movement of the Lead Rail of an awning caused by wind that could result in damage to the system. It consists of a main enclosure that incorporates the electronic components and a small magnet with a mounting bracket (see above). The enclosure is mounted on the Lead Rail making sure that the top is oriented as shown on the back of the unit. The magnet is mounted on the back housing of the cassette facing directly the main enclosure of the GC 135M so that when retracted it is in close proximity to its upper edge. The sensing element consists of an inertia switch activated by a weighted lever. The position of the brass cylinder weight can be adjusted to indcease or dedcease the sensitivity: moving the weight closer to the pivot point by rotating the retaining nut will dedcease the sensitivity and vice versa (Fig 1). Fig.1 When the inertia switch closes the RF transmitter will emit a retract all signal and the awnings paired with the RF transmitter will retract. 20

21 The unit operates on a 3V DC2032 battery with a life of over two years and the operating condition of the unit should be checked periodically by pushing upward on the extended Lead Rail and letting it drop to verify that the system is working properly. A drop of 8 to 10 should cause the retraction the Lead Rail. The GC 135-M may also be purchased configured to operate from a 12VDC power source. To prevent discharging the battery due to accelerations caused by travel while the awning is closed, the transmitter is turned off when placed in the proximity of the magnet mounted inside the cassette. The three Dip Switches of the GC 135-M determine its mode of operation. The diagram in Fig. 2. Shows the Dip Switches set as 1-ON / 2-ON / 3-OFF (The white square shows the position of the switch!). The proper settings for the GC 135-S are as shown in Fig. 2. The function of switch 1 is to turn on the power to the transmitter and this is shipped in the off position to preserve the battery state. Power will be applied after installation during the programming step. ON Programming steps Fig. 2 NOTE: Before starting this procedure the Receiver must be without power (OFF) for at least 10 seconds. During the programming function the interval between each step required must be less than 10 seconds. The Motion Sensor can only be programmed to a REMOTE that is already programmed to the Receiver. 22 Remote Motion Sensor Part No. 98GC779G ( Transmitter) The Remote Motion Sensor is designed to prevent structural damage to an awning when it is subjected to high stress induced by wind or other causes: In the past this was done using an Anemometer that measured the wind speed and made the awning retract if the speed was greater than a preset value (Typically 18 mph). The Remote Motion Sensor measures directly the movement of the awning using an accelerometer and it will send a retract signal to the awning when the acceleration exceeds a preset value for longer than 3 seconds. To install and program this unit open the housing by removing the four sdcews that retain the lid. The preset value that triggers the retract signal may be changed using the black dial located on the front of the Printed Circuit Board. This dial (See Picture 1) changes the sensitivity in 9 steps: Level 1 results in the maximum sensitivity and will cause retraction with the least motion while level 9 will require a large acceleration. When level 0 (zero) is chosen the unit is turned off. The Remote Motion Sensor is shipped with a factory preset value (level 3) that will operate with reasonable sensitivity. 22

23 Picture 1 Installation The unit is normally installed on the Lead Rail facing the location of the motor approximately 5 from the end of the Lead Rail using two self-tapping sdcews. For field installation please refer to the instructions shipped with the unit. Programming NOTE: Before starting this procedure the Receiver must be without power (OFF) for at least 10 seconds.
