1 PhotoShop Tutorials Scanning Photographic Film WorkFlow 1. Open PhotoShop 2. File > Import > choose scanner 3. When you import the scanner for the first time make sure you change it from Full Auto Mode to that of Professional Mode.

2 4. When scanning photographic film (35mm slides, 35mm film, medium and large format film) make sure the document type is set to Film (with Film Holder).

3 5. Choose your Film Type: Positive is for colour 35mm slides and colour positive film, Colour Negative and B&W Negative film. 6. Make sure the Thumbnail button is deactivated when scanning film as it is really only meant to used when scanning slides and has difficulty identifying individual images on a film strip. 7. Now we are ready to preview the film to be scanned by clicking on the Preview button.

Select the area you want to scan using the Marquee Tool in the Preview Window by holding the left button of the mouse and dragging the mouse over the desired area and a selection marquee will be created represented by a dash outline. The marquee can be resize by clicking onto the dashed outline and with the left button held the marquee can be adjusted. 9. After selecting the area you wish to scan return to the Epson Scan control window and set the Image Type to either 24-bit Colour or 8-bit Greyscale (Black & White images) and please ignore the rest of the options.

5 8. After selecting image type we need to consider the Resolution we wish to scan at. When scanning film we then to use high resolutions and then scale back the image as this allows for fast high quality scans. 9. The final consideration we need to address in the destination of our scan is the Target Size we wish to output the scan. By default the scanner will scan the image at 100% but if you wish to increase the image for printing one can either enter your desired output in the W (width) and H (height) boxes in either pixels, millimeters, inches or you can enter a Scale percentage. I tend to use pixels when setting up the target size when scanning film. Useful sizes for high quality 360 dpi printing and press/publication output output A4 = 297 x 210 mm or 4209 x 2979 pixels results in a 36mb RGB file A3 = 420 x 297 mm or 5909 x 4259 pixels results in a 72mb RGB file A2 = 594 x 420 mm or 8419 x 5953 pixels results in a 144mb RGB file A1 = 840 x 594 mm or x pixels results in a 288mb RGB file Greyscale files with the same pixels above will result in slightly smaller file sizes.

6 To check you have put in the correct dimensions and DPI check the dialogue box at the bottom of the preview window which will also display the file size. 10. Please ignore the rest of the adjustment options in the Epson Scan window as we will do all image adjustments in PhotoShop. 12. Now we are ready to Scan our artwork

7 13. When the scanner is scanning your artwork it make take some time especially if one is scanning at a high resolution and target size. Please leave the computer alone when scanning and not feel tempted to use another application as this may result in the application freezing or the computer crashing. 14. After the scanned image appears in the work area in PhotoShop save the file immediately before working on it. For high quality scans (360 dpi) may I suggest saving them as either PhotoShop or uncompressed TIFF files, for medium quality scans (200 dpi) JPeg will do but make sure the image quality is set to 12 or maximum and low quality scans for screen output (72 dpi) Jpeg with a high quality setting of 8 will give acceptable results.
