3 Use this device properly and safely. BEFORE USE, READ THIS MANUAL. This operator s manual includes operating procedures, safety precautions, and specifications for the NIDEK AUTO LENSMETER, LM-600/LM-600P/LM-600PD. Cautions for safety and operating procedures must be thoroughly understood before using the device. Keep this manual handy for reference. The device complies with ISO 8598 (Optics and optical instruments - Lensmeters). There are no parts within the device that requires servicing by the user other than printer paper. This manual is described mainly using the screen samples of the LM-600P. If you encounter any problems or have questions about the device, please contact NIDEK or your authorized distributor. Safety precautions In this manual, a signal word is used to designate the degree or level of safety alerting. The definition is as follows. CAUTION Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury or property damage accident. Even situations that are labeled CAUTION may result in serious injury under certain conditions. Safety must be followed strictly at all times. I

4 Usage precautions Before use Do not use the device for other than the intended purpose. CAUTION NIDEK will not be responsible for accidents or malfunction caused by such misuse. Never modify nor touch the internal structure of the device. This may result in electric shock or malfunction. Install the device in an environment that meets the following conditions. The following conditions must be maintained during use. Temperature: 10 to 35 C (50 to 95 F) Humidity: 30 to 85% (Non-condensing) Pressure: 800 to 1060 hpa A place with low dust A place with little external light A place free of vibration and impact Do not store the device in an area that is exposed to rain or water, or contains poisonous gas or liquid. Corrosion or malfunction of the device may occur. Avoid installing the device where it is exposed to direct air-conditioning flow. Changes in temperature may result in condensation inside the device or adversely affect measurements. Avoid using the device in a place exposed to direct sunlight or near incandescent light. A light-reflecting surface such as a glass showcase or a shiny table is also not appropriate for precise work. Under such circumstances, the device may work irregularly or issue error messages. Be sure to use a wall outlet which meets the power specification requirements. If the line voltage is too high or too low, the device may not give full performance. Malfunction or fire may occur. The electrical outlet must have a grounding terminal. Electric shock or fire may occur in the event of malfunction or power leakage. Insert the mains plug into an outlet as far as the prongs of the plug will go. Fire may occur if the device is used with a loose connection. For supplying the device with the power, never use a table tap and extension cable. The electrical safety may be lowered. II

5 Install the device in area where the outlet that the mains plug is inserted into is easily CAUTION accessible during use. In addition, ensure that the power cord can be disconnected without the use of a tool. Otherwise, it may interfere with disconnecting of the power from the input power source in case of abnormality. Do not use the power cord other than equipped. Do not use the equipped power cord for purpose other than intended. Malfunction or fire may result. Do not place heavy objects on the power cord. The damaged power cord may cause fire or electric shock. Before connecting a cable, turn off the power switch and disconnect the power cord from an outlet. Malfunction of the device may result. To transport the device, use the special packing materials to protect the device from impact of dropping. Excessive vibration or impact to the device may cause malfunction. During use Immediately replace the power cord if the internal wires are exposed, the table turns CAUTION on or off when the power cord is moved, or the cord and/or plug are too hot to be held with hands. This may result in electric shock or fire. In the event of malfunction, disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. Never touch the inside of the device and contact your authorized distributor. There may be a few constantly-lit, missing, or dead pixels in your LCD which are a characteristic of the LCD. This does not represent failure of the LCD; continuously use the display. 6 The International Electromagnetic Commission sets the essential requirements for CAUTION electrical and electronic equipment that may disturb, or be disturbed by, other equipment. The LM-600/LM-600P/LM-600PD complies with these requirements as tabled on pages 113 to 116. Follow the guidance in the tables for use of the device in an electromagnetic environment. This device has been tested and found to comply with the limits for medical devices to the IEC : A1: These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a standard medical installation. This device generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to other devices in the vicinity. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this device does cause harmful interference to other devices, which can be determined by turning the device off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures: Reorient or relocate the receiving device. Increase the separation between the devices. Connect the device to an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the other device(s) are connected. Consult the manufacturer or field service technician for help. Never use the device with cable or accessories other than the designated ones. Malfunction caused by deteriorated electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) characteristics may result. Never use portable and mobile radio frequency (RF) devices in the vicinity of this device. These devices may adversely affect medical electrical equipment and malfunction may result. IV

7 After use While the device is not in use, turn it off. CAUTION The LM-600P/LM-600PD uses a heat-sensitive printer paper. To keep the printed data for a long period of time, make copies of the printouts. The paper degrades over time and the printed data may become illegible. Do not yank the power cord to disconnect it from an outlet but hold the plug. This can damage the metal core of the cord and may result in electric shock, short circuit, or fire. Occasionally clean the prongs of the mains plug with a dry cloth. If dust settles between the prongs, the dust will collect moisture, and short circuit or fire may occur. If the device will not be used for a long time, disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet. Electric leak may occur. Maintenance and check Only service technicians properly trained by NIDEK can repair the device. CAUTION NIDEK is not responsible for any accidents resulted from improper servicing. When performing maintenance work, secure a sufficient maintenance space. Maintenance work in an insufficient space may result in injury. Take special care not to scratch the protective glass under the nosepiece. Flaws on the glass substantially lower the reliability of the measurement. Clean the protective glass under the nosepiece every once in a while with a blower. If dust settles on the protective glass, it may affect the measurement accuracy. Disposal Follow the local governing ordinances and recycling plans regarding disposal or CAUTION recycling of device components. It is recommended to commission the disposal to a designated industrial waste disposal contractor. When disposing of packing materials, sort them by material and follow local governing ordinances and recycling plans. V

BEFORE USE 1.1 Outline of Device 1 The NIDEK AUTO LENSMETER LM-600/LM-600P/LM-600PD measures the optical performance of spectacle lenses such as single vision, bifocal (trifocal), and progressive power lenses or contact lenses. This device has a measuring unit and a display unit in front, and a printer unit on the right side (Only the LM-600P/LM-600PD is equipped with the printer). The measuring unit is comprised of a nosepiece, a lens table, a lens holder, and a lens marker. Below the nosepiece, there is a read button for reading measured data. The display unit employs a full-graphic color LCD, displaying measured data, alignment condition of a lens, and settings of the device. The device also offers the following features as well as the above features: Performs area measurement, which measures the refractive power at multiple positions of a lens simultaneously. Makes measurement easier and more correct by detecting changes in the refractive power of a progressive power lens. Changes measurement mode automatically after detecting a progressive power lens. Performs easier and quicker measurement with automatic functions such as auto read, auto R/L selection, and auto ADD measurement. Measures the Pupillary Distance (PD). (LM-600PD only) Connected to a personal computer with the USB interface in addition to the RS-232C interface of the standard communication protocol among NIDEK optometry devices. Adopts the marker for repellent or super repellent lenses. Equipped with the Eye Care card writer and enables to transfer the measured data to other devices wirelessly. Contains a speedy, advanced, and quiet line printer. (LM-600P/LM-600PD only) Measures ultraviolet rays (UV-A, center wavelength 365 nm) transmittance. (UV model only) 1.2 Intended Use This device is designed to measure vertex powers and prismatic effects of spectacle and contact lenses, to orientate and mark uncut lenses, and to verify the correct mounting of lenses in spectacle frames. 1

ON Power turned on 1 OFF Blinking Power turned off Display auto off mode Display auto off mode When no button is pressed for the time set with the Auto off parameter, the display auto off function works and then the display turns off automatically. The measurement light source also turns off. To recover from auto off state, press any button. During lens measurement, the device will not be placed into display auto off mode. The LM-600PD cancels the display auto off mode after the nose slider is moved. 3. Function buttons Functions assigned to the function buttons are displayed with icons on the screen. 4. Eye Care card slot Used to save the measured data. Never remove the Eye Care card while it is being accessed. When the measured data is saved in the LM-600/LM-600P/LM-600PD memory and the Eye Care card is inserted, the data is automatically written. 5. Lens holder lever Used to move the lens holder. To fix a lens To remove a lens Lift it once and lower it gently. Lift it until it clicks. 6. Nosepiece Used to hold a lens; the base point for measurements. When measuring contact lenses, replace the standard nosepiece with the supplied one for contact lenses. Before measurement, make sure that the contact part of the lens has no foreign matters or scratches. 7. Read button Used to read measured data. This button fixes the measured data on the screen so that they are saved in the memory. The read button is inoperative during occurrence of a measurement error. UV model: Holding this button for about 1 second starts UV measurement. Models without the UV function: Holding this button for about 1 second on the normal measurement screen, PPL measurement screen, or auto measurement screen changes to the prism entry screen. 8. Contrast knob Used to adjust the screen contrast. 9. Marking lever Used to mark a lens for its basic line. To do so, push the lever down. 3

14 BEFORE USE Configuration 10. Lens table Touched to the bottom of lens frames. The PD can be measured with the scale on the lens table. (LM- 600/LM-600P) Mount the lens frames so that their nosepads come into contact with the nosepiece while aligning the frame center. Bring the lens table close to the lens to read the single-eye PD. * The nosepads may not touch the nosepiece depending on the lens frame size and nosepad shape. 11. Lens table lever Used to move the lens table back and forth. 12. Printer cover (LM-600P/LM-600PD only) Opened by sliding the lever at the rear of the device when replacing the printer paper. 13. Nose slider (LM-600PD only) Used to measure the PD of mounted lenses. Place the frames so that their nosepads straddle the nose slider. The nose slider position determines the right or left lens. The PD is measured from the nose slider position when the measured data is read. When the state is changed from single to R/L by pressing the clear button, moving the nose slider returns the state to R/L and displays the PD. The nose slider functions when the lens table is positioned within 50 mm from the nosepiece center. When the nosepiece center is separated from the lens table by more than 50 mm, the slider automatically turns off. When the slider is not in use, move it to the far left and lift it upright so that it does not obstruct measurement. 4

The communication software needs to be installed in the computer. 18. Interface connector Used for communication. RS-232C interface connector. Connect the AR, ARK, RT-2100/RT-5100, or a computer. When the device is connected to the AR-600/AR-330A series, ARK-700/ARK-530A series, RKT-7700/TONOREF II, it is possible to print the data measured by the LM-600P/LM-600PD with the printer of the connected device. To connect the optional foot switch, also use this connector. To connect a computer, the communication software needs to be installed in a computer. Accessory equipment connected to the analog and digital interfaces must be certified according to the representative appropriate national standards (for example, UL 1950 for Data Processing Equipment, UL for Medical Equipment, and CSA C22.2 No , EN , and IEC ) Furthermore, all configurations shall comply with the system standard IEC Anyone who connects additional equipment to the signal input part or signal output part configures a medical system, and is therefore responsible that the system complies with the requirements of the system standard IEC If in doubt, consult the technical service department or your local representative. 5

16 BEFORE USE Displays 1.4 Displays Measurement screen There are four measurement screens, Auto measurement screen, Normal measurement screen, Progressive power lens (PPL) measurement screen, and Contact lens (CL) measurement screen. The screen below shows the normal measurement screen to measure single vision lenses or bifocal (trifocal) lenses. 1. L indication 2. Setting indications 1. R indication 3. Target 5. AXIS bar 4. R/L indication Shows measurement in the R/L state. Data below the indication shows measured data of the lens side. The lens side is not selected (single state). The left-eye lens is selected. The right-eye lens is selected. The measured data of the lens in single state is saved in the memory. The measured data of the left-eye lens is saved in the memory. The measured data of the right-eye lens is saved in the memory. To change the lens side, press the L-selection button or R-selection button. The R or L indication of the side that is being specified at the moment will blink. To change the state from R/L to single, press the clear button. 6

17 BEFORE USE Displays 2. Setting indications Show each setting of the abbe number, wavelength, indication step, CYL mode, auto read, and state of the Eye Care card. Auto read When the target is aligned, as well as when the read button is pressed, measured data is automatically saved in the memory and fixed on the screen. 3. Target Shows the optical center of a lens to be measured. The shape of the target changes according to the setting of the Target parameter and alignment level. For the normal target, when auto read is set and the target changes to (cross) or (large cross), the current axis is displayed to the upper right of the target. 7

18 BEFORE USE Displays 4. Measurement mode/lens indication Shows a measurement mode and whether the lens side is specified or not. The R/L indication on the top of the screen also shows the lens side. Normal measurement Measurement of single vision lenses or bifocal (trifocal) lenses PPL measurement When it is detected that a lens is placed in an inverted position, the icon changes to CL measurement to call attention to it. Auto measurement When the lens on the nosepiece is detected as a progressive power lens, the normal measurement screen changes to the PPL measurement screen automatically. When the distance portion of a progressive power lens is placed on the nosepiece, it may not be detected as a progressive power lens. In such a case, put the intermediate portion (progressive zone) or near portion area on the nosepiece. When it is detected that a lens is inverted, the icon changes to attention to it. to call See Screen change in auto measurement (page 48) for details of the screen in auto measurement and change of the measurement mode indication. AXIS bar The thick line displayed on the protractor in the alignment circle shows the axis. 6. Alignment circle The target is displayed on this circle. The center shows the optical center position. 7. Measurement selection button Used to change the measurement screen. Each press changes the measurement screen in the order of Auto measurement Normal measurement PPL measurement CL measurement Auto measurement... The icon on the button shows which screen will be displayed next when the button is pressed. Changes the screen to the normal measurement screen. Changes the screen to the PPL measurement screen. Changes the screen to the CL measurement screen. Only when the Contact parameter is set to On, this icon is displayed. Changes the screen to the normal measurement screen in auto measurement. 8

19 BEFORE USE Displays In the setting for measuring contact lenses only, the parameter button is displayed instead. Only when the Contact parameter is set to Only, this icon is displayed. When the Icon parameter is set to Fixed, the icon of the measurement selection button is displayed without toggle as follows: Changes the screen in the order of Auto measurement Normal measurement PPL measurement CL measurement Auto measurement... 1 In addition, extended pressing of the measurement selection button functions as the parameter button. When the icon changes, release the button to display the parameter screen. 8. Cylinder +/- button Used to simply change the CYL reading between + and -. Pressing this button again returns to the CYL mode set with the parameter. Pressing any button other than the read button or the parameter button the parameter. also returns to the mode set with (White) (Yellow) Shows that data is displayed in the CYL mode set with the parameter. Shows that data (SPH, CYL, and AXIS) is displayed after reversing the CYL mode set with the parameter. When the Prism parameter is set to P-B or BU/D BI/O, the button can also switch the prism coordinate display. Extended pressing of the button changes the icon display as shown below. Releasing the button correspondingly switches the prism coordinate display. (White) (Yellow) Shows that data is displayed in the coordinates set with the parameter. Shows that data is displayed in the coordinates other than those set with the parameter. 9. R/L selection button Used to specify the right-eye or left-eye lens. Changes the screen to the right-eye side. Changes the screen to the left-eye side. When the Icon parameter is set to Fixed, the icon of the R/L selection button is displayed without toggle as follows: Toggles the screen between the right-eye and left-eye lenses. When R or L is detected by the nose slider with the LM-600PD, following icon (blank) is displayed. Shows that the lens side is being detected by the nose slider. The button is disabled. While this icon is displayed, the lens side cannot be selected by the button. 10. Clear button Used to clear data in the memory. The fixed data is cleared and the R/L indication returns to. When the Single parameter is set to Off, the R/L indication returns to. 9

20 BEFORE USE Displays Extended pressing of the clear button functions as the clear button of the Eye Care card. After the button is pressed and held, a beep sounds and the pilot lamp blinks. Releasing the button erases all the data in the Eye Care card. 11. Print button Used to print the fixed data out, output it by communication, and write it to the Eye Care card. Functions and indications of the button change depending on the parameter settings. When this button is pressed before the measured data is fixed, the data is fixed and printed out. LM-600P/LM-600PD Icons Functions Prints measured data out. Pressing and holding this button for one second or more feeds the paper. When the device is connected to an external device, the measured data is transmitted at the same time of printing (When the Com mode parameter is set to other than Off ). When the Eye Care card is inserted, the data is written. When this button is pressed and held with the clear button Parameters Printer Com mode On together, the printer paper is fed a little and cut. Prints measured data using the printer of a connected AR, ARK or RKT. For details of Communication print (AR print), see Connecting to the AR, ARK or RKT and setting parameters (page 70). When the Eye Care card is inserted, the data is written. Measured data is transmitted to a connected external device. Printing is not performed. When the Eye Care card is inserted, the data is written. Data is written to the Eye Care card. Printing and data transmission are not performed. When the device is connected to an external device, the measured data is transmitted at the same time of printing. When the Eye Care card is inserted, the data is written. 21 BEFORE USE Displays PD indications of the measurement screen (LM-600PD only) This is the measurement screen to measure the PD using the lens table and nose slider. The PD can be measured on the screen other than CL measurement screen. 1 PD The PD of mounted lenses (binocular PD, RPD, LPD) is indicated in 0.5 mm increments. The PD is measured at the point where the nose slider is located at the press of the read button. This value is displayed only when PD parameter is set to On. However, it is not displayed when the nose slider is placed where the PD cannot be measured. Progressive Power Lens (PPL) measurement screen This is the screen to measure progressive power lenses. 22 BEFORE USE Displays Contact Lens (CL) measurement screen This is the screen to measure contact lenses. SE value The auto read setting is not displayed on the setting indication. In CL measurement, auto read, auto R/L selection, and auto print do not work. A SE value is displayed in addition to lens measured data. Explanations about icons of function buttons Curling up of the lower-left corner of the icon like indicates that the button has multiple functions. Extended pressing of the button sounds a short beep. Then, the icon indication changes and the pilot lamp blinks. Releasing the button executes the function displayed by the icon. For the functions of the extended pressing of each button, refer to the explanations of each icon. 12

23 BEFORE USE Displays Prism layout screens Two screens are provided for blocking lenses for heterophoria prescriptions using the prism layout function: Prism entry screen used for entering prism prescriptions and measurement mode screen for measuring lenses. With the prism layout function, the on-screen position of the target is shifted based on the entered prism prescriptions. Easy alignment of lenses is allowed only by aligning the target to the center of the alignment circle. In addition, the target changes depending on the alignment conditions in the same manner as the measurement screen: (cross) (large cross). Therefore, an alignment error can be reduced compared to the marking of lenses for prism prescriptions using the measurement screen. 1 Prism entry screen This screen is used for entering prism prescriptions. Preset prism prescription Entered prism prescriptions are displayed. As soon as prism prescriptions are entered, the target moves opposite to the direction of the entered prism data. 4. 39 OPERATING PROCEDURE Setting Lenses 2.3 Setting Lenses Make sure that there are no dusts on the tips of the nosepiece and the lens holder before setting lenses. It may damage the lenses Setting uncut lenses 2 1 Set a lens on the nosepiece. Place the lens center on the nosepiece with the convex side up. 2 Fix the lens with the lens holder. Lift the lens holder lever to unlock, then lower it slowly to fix the lens. When a uncut lens is set, the lens table does not need to be used. Set the lens with the upper side of the lens towards the operator. For the LM-600/LM-600P/LM-600PD, the zero degree direction of the prism base is on the operator s left as viewed from the front. When there are still scratches on the lenses after cleaning of the nosepiece and lens holder, request the maintenance such as part replacement. 29

Otherwise, foreign matters may be attached to the nosepiece or lens holder and damage the lenses. 1 Set mounted lenses. Place the frames on the nosepiece with the front surface up. 2 2 Set the lens table. Pull the lens table lever towards the operator until it touches the bottom of the frames. Touch the bottom of both frames onto the lens table. If the frames are off the lens table, an error may occur in the axis value. Check that the nose slider is lifted upright on the far left. Nose slider Detection by the nose slider position has a higher priority to select R or L. In such a case, the R/L selection button ( or ) is disabled. 3 Fix the lens with the lens holder. Lift the lens holder lever to unlock, then lower it slowly to fix the lens. 31

42 OPERATING PROCEDURE Setting Lenses Setting for PD measurement (LM-600PD only) For mounted lenses, the optical center distance between the right and left lenses can be measured. LPD RPD PD Precise PD measurement may be difficult with glasses with cylinder-only lenses, high power lenses, or sharply warped frames. 1 Set the nose slider. Move the lens table forward, and pull down the nose slider. Nose slider 2 Place the frames on the nose slider. Place the nosepads of the frames on the nose slider. 3 Set the lens on the nosepiece. The left-eye or right-eye lens is automatically detected by the nose slider position. Blinking or indicates which lens is being measured. 32

R or L detection by the nose slider has higher priority than the other operations. 45 OPERATING PROCEDURE Measuring Single Vision Lenses 2.4 Measuring Single Vision Lenses Single vision lenses are measured on the auto measurement screen or normal measurement screen. 1 Specify the lens side if necessary. Press the L-selection button or R-selection button to specify the left-eye lens or right-eye lens. The R or L indication blinks indicating the measurement lens side. 2 When the lens side is specified after measurement in the single state (R/L not specified), the measured data is cleared. Specify the lens side before measurement. 2 Perform alignment of a lens. Move the lens to bring the target ( ) close to the center of the alignment circle. When the target comes within a range of 0.5D from the center, the target changes from to (cross). For mounted lenses, move the lens table along the frames. When alignment is complete, make sure that the bottom of the frames is touched to the lens table. When the target changes from to (cross), correct measurement can be performed in normal measurement. When marking a lens, perform more correct alignment until (large cross) appears. 3 Press the read button. The measured data is fixed. The auto read function can be selected with the Auto RD S or Auto RD R/L parameter. 35

46 OPERATING PROCEDURE Measuring Single Vision Lenses Fixing measured data After the measured data on the screen is fixed and the data is saved in the memory, the R/L indication is inverted. R/L indication when data is fixed Shows that measured data of the lens in the single state is saved in the memory. Shows that measured data of the left-eye lens is saved in the memory. Shows that measured data of the right-eye lens is saved in the memory. The target is not fixed. In order to retry measurement, align the target and press the read button again. The CYL mode can be changed with the cylinder +/- button even after data is fixed. Fixing measured data with the auto read function When the Auto RD S or Auto RD R/L parameter is set to or, the data is automatically fixed after the target is aligned as well as when the read button is pressed. When the Auto RD S and/or Auto RD R/L parameter is set to, the measured data is automatically fixed after the target is aligned. Press the L-selection button or R-selection button to specify the left-eye lens or right-eye lens. Follow the same steps as the first lens. In the R/L state, when the Auto R/L parameter is set to On, R and L are switched automatically after the measured data is fixed and the lens is removed. 5 Press the print button to print out the measured results (or transmit the data or write the fixed data to the Eye Care card). S parameter is set to On, the measured data is automatically printed out after the data is fixed in the single state and the lens is removed. When the Auto Prt. R/L parameter is set to On, the measured data is automatically printed out after the data of both eyes is fixed and the lens is removed. 36

When marking with the prism prescription, follow the prescription. When the Prism parameter is set to Off, measured values are displayed larger than when prism measured values are displayed. For a display sample, see 2.5 Measuring Bifocal Lenses (page 38). Guide mark To align the target precisely, a guide mark ( ) is displayed in the alignment circle. It is displayed by setting the Guide parameter to On. Align the target by moving the lens in the direction in which the guide line is displayed. Proper alignment makes the guide mark disappear. 37

48 OPERATING PROCEDURE Measuring Bifocal Lenses 2.5 Measuring Bifocal Lenses Bifocal lenses (or trifocal lenses) are measured sequentially in the order of the distance portion near portion (for trifocal lenses, distance portion intermediate portion near portion). 49 OPERATING PROCEDURE Measuring Bifocal Lenses 4 Display the near ADD power (Add: 1st ADD power). Pull the lens towards the operator to bring the near portion onto the nosepiece. When the ADD power is detected, the auto ADD measurement function places the device into ADD power measurement. For trifocals, bring the intermediate portion onto the nosepiece. 2 Intermediate portion It is not necessary to align the target. Measure the near ADD power without removing the lens from the nosepiece. If the lens has been removed once, restarting distance measurement is necessary. For trifocal lenses, when the vertical length of the intermediate portion is narrow, the measuring beam may interrupt the boundary and correct measurement may not be performed. 5 Press the read button. The measured data of the ADD power (Add) is fixed. Auto read is disabled so press the read button to fix the measured data. When the measured prism value is not displayed, Ad is displayed. For bifocal lenses, measurement is complete. For trifocals, proceed to Steps 6 and 7. 39

Auto read is disabled so press the read button to fix the measured data. 8 Measure the other lens if necessary (in the R/L state). Press the L-selection button or R-selection button to specify the left-eye lens or right-eye lens. Follow the same steps as the first lens. 9 Press the print button to print out the measured results (or transmit the data or write the fixed data to the Eye Care card.). Bring the opposite side of the segment position from the midpoint of the lens center onto the nosepiece. 2 2 Press the read button. The distance power is fixed. It is not necessary to align the target. This measured data is only a reference for obtaining the ADD power and is not the actual distance power. Record the distance power in normal measurement with the convex side up. 3 Set the near portion. Pull the lens towards the operator to bring the near portion onto the nosepiece. The following is the measurement procedure for the right-eye lens. 4 Measure the distance power. 1) Bring the intermediate portion (progressive zone) onto the nosepiece. Place a portion that is slightly lower than the center of the lens on the nosepiece. When the target is off the vertical line of the crossline in the horizontal direction while the lens is moved, move the lens in the horizontal direction. When the vertical position is roughly aligned, the arrow disappears. 4) Precisely adjust the lens vertically and horizontally to align the target with the crossline until the target changes from to (cross). 5) When the target changes to (cross) and measured data stabilizes, the measured data is automatically fixed. The Distance measurement complete message appears. The screen changes to ADD power measurement for the near portion automatically. When the Dist. auto RD parameter is set to Off, press the read button when the target changes to (cross) in Step 5) and the measured data stabilizes. When the distance portion cannot be detected in normal measurement, bring the distance portion onto the center of the nosepiece, and then press the read button. For progressive power lenses corrected with the horizontal prism, the position of 3 mm upper from the pupil for the distance vision with glasses is marked as distance portion. In such a case, press the read button manually. The near portion can be measured in the normal procedure. 45

The arrow shows the direction in which the lens should be moved. 2) Move the lens slowly in the direction of the arrow (towards the operator). When the intermediate portion (progressive zone) is detected, the Conducting near measurement... message appears and the current ADD power (Add) appears. The indicator for near portion ( ) appears above, below, on the right of, or on the left of the target, which shows the direction and movement distance to move the lens. Move the lens in the direction of ( ). The number of indicators (up to three) shows how much the lens should be moved. 3) Align the lens horizontally. Move the lens in the horizontal direction until the indicator for near portion ( ) on the left or right of the target disappears. 4) Align the lens vertically. Move the lens in the vertical direction until the indicator for near portion ( ) above or below the target disappears. Move the lens in the vertical direction after horizontal alignment of the lens. When the indicator for near portion appears on the left or right of the target, perform horizontal alignment again. Perform vertical alignment of the lens ensuring that the indicator for near portion is not displayed on the left or right of the target. When the indicator for near portion above the target does not disappear: For small vertical frames, the indicator for near portion may not disappear due to steep variations in lens powers even though the lens is moved towards the operator. In such cases, press the read button to measure the lens with the lens table at the front. 46

When the Indicator parameter is set to Off, align the lens referring to the target. When the vertical position is aligned, the arrow disappears. After horizontal and vertical alignment of the lens, the target changes from to (cross). 2 5) Precisely adjust the lens vertically and horizontally to align the target to the crossline until the target changes from to (cross). 6) When the target changes to (cross) and the measured data stabilizes, the data is fixed automatically. The Near measurement complete message appears. When the Near auto RD parameter is set to Off, press the read button when the target changes to (cross) in Step 6) and the measured data stabilizes. When the near portion cannot be detected in normal measurement, bring the near portion onto the center of the nosepiece, and then press the read button. 6 Measure the other lens if necessary (in the R/L state). Press the L-selection button or R-selection button to specify the left-eye or right-eye lens. Follow the same steps as the first lens. 7 Press the print button to print out the measured results (, transmit the data, or write the fixed data to Eye Care card.). Measurement screen in the single state When the lens side is not specified (single state), a round lens is displayed in form on the screen. The measurement procedure is the same as when the lens side is specified. Screen change in auto measurement When the lens on the nosepiece is detected as a progressive power lens on the auto measurement screen (normal measurement), the screen changes to the PPL measurement screen (auto measurement mode) automatically. 1) Set a progressive power lens onto the nosepiece on the auto measurement screen. Place the intermediate portion (progressive zone) that is slightly lower than the center of the lens or near portion area onto the nosepiece. When the distance portion is placed on the nosepiece, the lens may not be detected as a progressive power lens. The progressive power lens detection is continuously performed while the lens is set on the nosepiece in auto measurement mode. 48

Progressive power lenses for small vertical frame When the height of the processed lens is too small for the near portion to be included, the display changes to alert that the proper near power has not been measured. When the edge of the lens is found before the near portion is detected, a small lens image is displayed on the screen. At this time, the lens image and measured ADD value are displayed in red. The near ADD power is fixed by the auto read function, and measurement completes. If the lack of near portion is detected when the Near auto RD parameter is set to Off, the near ADD power is automatically read. The ADD value is printed out with an exclamation point for attention. An exclamation point is added. 49

60 OPERATING PROCEDURE Measuring Progressive Power Lenses When the height of the processed lens is small and near portion is lacked, the ADD power cannot be measured with the usual auto read function. When the height of the processed lens is sufficient When the height of the processed lens is small The near portion is lacked from a lens shape. For such lenses, measure the point which is nearest to the near portion with the auto read function. The measurement point is out of the near portion, so the measured data is not near power of the original uncut lens. Measurement point (Nosepiece position) The measuring procedure is same as normal lenses, but note the following things. Be sure to move the lenses in the vertical direction when the indicator for near portion ( ) is not displayed on the right and left sides. Otherwise, the ADD power may be underestimated. Align the nosepiece so that more than half of it is covered with a lens. When the nosepiece is widely out of the lens, a measurement error occurs. The lack amount of the ADD power cannot be judged. Consider the additional power acquired with this function as lower than actual. 50

P-B BU/D BI/O Off The prism measured value is displayed by polar coordinates. The prism measured value is displayed by rectangular coordinates. The prism measured value is not be displayed. 1 Mark the pupil center (eye point). Instruct the customer to wear glasses and look straight. Mark the pupil center on each lens. The mark should be 1 mm or smaller in diameter. If the mark is too big, it may interfere with the measurement. 2 Specify the lens side. Press the L-selection button or R-selection button to specify the left-eye or right-eye lens. 3 Set mounted lenses. Place the frames on the nosepiece with the lens convex side up. 4 Hold the lens with the lens holder. 52

The top of the nosepiece for contact lenses is smaller than the standard one. 2 Change the screen to the CL measurement screen. Press the measurement selection button on the PPL measurement screen to change the screen to the CL measurement screen. When the Contact parameter is set to Only, the measurement selection button is disabled. The mode is restricted to the CL measurement. When the Contact parameter is set to Off, the screen cannot be changed to the CL measurement screen. Select On or Only. 3 Specify the lens side if necessary. Press the L-selection button or R-selection button to specify the left-eye or righteye lens. 54

65 OPERATING PROCEDURE Measuring Contact Lenses 4 Set a contact lens. Put the lens on the nosepiece with the convex side up. For soft contact lenses, set the lens after removing moisture from the surface with a soft cloth. 2 Hold a contact lens with tweezers or fingers. Be careful not to damage the lens. CAUTION Only use tweezers with round tips. Do not press the contact lens down with the lens holder. It damages the contact lens. 5 Align the contact lens. Align the contact lens, pushing its end lightly with tweezers tips. 6 Press the read button. In CL measurement, a SE value is displayed along with the S, C and A measured data. SE (Spherical Equivalent) value This is the half of the cylinder value added to the sphere value. When a non-cylindrical contact lens is measured and still a cylinder value is detected, the SE value will be more reliable than the SPH value to know the total sphere value. It reduces the error in the measured data made by the unintended cylinder value. In CL measurement, auto read is disabled regardless of the parameter setting. Press the read button for measurement. 55

Measure a soft contact lens as quickly as possible before the lens surface becomes dry. Since the lens contains water and is made of soft material, the lens cannot stay spherical for a long time, altering the measured data. 56

67 OPERATING PROCEDURE Measuring UV Transmittance (UV model only) 2.9 Measuring UV Transmittance (UV model only) A UV (ultraviolet rays) transmittance is measured with the central wavelength of 365 nm (UV-A) by percentage. The UV transmittance can be measured on all measurement screens. To measure the UV transmittance, set the UV, UV step, UV display, Auto correct parameters. To measure the UV transmittance, set the UV parameter to On (initial setting) or With. For details of parameter setting, see 2.14 Setting Parameters (page 76). 2 1 Set a lens on the nosepiece. 2 Align the distance portion of the lens. Move the lens to bring the target ( ) close to the center of the alignment circle. To maintain the measurement accuracy of the UV transmittance, the measurement range is recommended to be within 2. 3 Press the read button for about one second. UV measurement is performed and the measured result is displayed. Perform UV measurement just after measurement for the distance portion. UV measurement is not performed after measurement for the near portion (intermediate portion) even if the read button is pressed. When the UV parameter is set to With, perform alignment correctly because power measurement is performed simultaneously with UV measurement. The indication of the measurement result differs according to the setting of the UV display parameter. When the UV display parameter is set to Simple : The UV transmittance (%) is displayed on the lower part of the screen. UV transmittance indication (%) 57

68 OPERATING PROCEDURE Measuring UV Transmittance (UV model only) When the UV display parameter is set to Compare : The screen changes to the UV measurement screen and the measured result is displayed. Target indication The range of inside of the circle is within 2. Buttons on UV measurement screen Used to correct the UV transmittance to 100%. This button is used when 100% is not displayed without the lens on the nosepiece. UV 100% correction Pressing the button for about one second starts the correction. When the UV button 100% correction is correctly performed, a beep sounds. Remeasurement button Used to measure the UV transmittance again. The last result of the UV transmittance 1) is saved as lens measurement data. When the target becomes cross (within 2 ), measurement can be performed more precisely. Compare measurement button Exit button Used to compare with the UV transmittance of other lenses. Used to return to each measurement screen. When the UV transmittance is unstable, it is recommended to perform UV measurement after UV 100% correction. Compare measurement of the UV transmittance It is possible to measure the other lenses and compare the UV transmittance. 1) Change the lens and set its optical center on the nosepiece. Then, press the compare measurement button. When the target becomes cross (within 2 ), measurement can be performed more precisely. 58

69 OPERATING PROCEDURE Measuring UV Transmittance (UV model only) 2) The measured results of the two lenses are displayed on the UV compare screen simultaneously. The left side 1) is original measured result and right side 2) is that of additional one. 2 Pressing of the remeasurement button (or compare measurement button ) renews the result of 1) (or2)). UV 100% correction button functions as on UV measurement screen. 3) Press the exit button to return to each measurement screen. Compared lens data 2) is not displayed on the measurement screen. The UV transmittance displayed in the lower part of the measurement screen is result of 1). Screen display at the time of auto correction When the Auto correct parameter is set to On or Silent, the UV transmittance is automatically corrected to 100%. During the auto correction, the message UV100% during measurement is displayed. When the message disappears, 100% correction is renewed. However, it is not renewed if the lens is put when the message is displayed. Lens measurement value is not influenced even if the message UV100% during measurement is displayed during lens measurement. 100% correction is performed at 5 to 60 minute intervals according to change amount of the camera sensitivity of the UV measurement. 59

70 OPERATING PROCEDURE Marking 2.10 Marking Marking at the optical center Marking is performed to indicate the optical center position and axis direction. To measure the PD of mounted lenses, mark a lens at the optical center of both the righteye and left-eye lenses. Measure the distance between the marked center points. For simple astigmatism lenses such as S 0.00 D and C D or equivalent, the target cannot be moved in the bus direction. Mark a lens at the geometric center in the correct direction. 1 Set a lens on the nosepiece. 2 Align the lens. Move the lens until the target changes from to (cross) and then from (cross) to (large cross). (large cross) shows that the lens is within 0.8 mm in diameter from the optical center where marking is allowed. 3 When the lens contains cylindrical power, set the cylinder axis according to the prescription. While watching the axis value, rotate the lens until the prescribed axis value is displayed. When the Auto RD S or Auto RD R/L parameter is set to or, the measured data will be automatically fixed after the target is aligned. Watch the axis value displayed in the upper-right of the target. When (large cross) changes back to (cross), align the target again. For the axis of 90 or 180, the shape of the target changes as shown to the right. AXIS 90 AXIS

71 OPERATING PROCEDURE Marking When marking a cylinder lens in the bus direction, adjust the axis to Mark the lens. Press down the marking lever to mark the lens. Three points in a line parallel to the lens table are marked. 2 Press down the marking lever slowly and lightly. Pressing down firmly may damage the tip of the ink cartridge. 5 Remove the lens from the nosepiece. To remove the lens, lift the lens holder lever until it clicks. Do not touch the marked points. Faded ink makes the cylinder axis hard to see. It is recommended to make its mark on the uncut lens with a marking pen to identify the right or left side of the lens or nasal side after marking. After marking the repellent or super repellent lenses, pull up the marking lever slowly so that the tip of the ink cartridge gradually becomes off from the lens. To do so causes fewer ink spread and the ink markings become easy to see. 61

72 OPERATING PROCEDURE Marking Marking for prism prescription (Prism Layout) This is the procedure to mark lenses for heterophoria prescription. The prism alignment function allows the operator to easily determine the marking point on the lens. Prism layout function Prior entry of the prism prescription causes the on-screen target to move opposite to the direction by the amount of the prism data. Align the lens so that the target is aligned to the center of the alignment circle and then mark the lens. Only when marking lenses 1 Press the read button and measurement selection button simultaneously on the normal measurement screen, PPL measurement screen, or auto measurement screen. The screen changes to the prism entry screen. For models without the UV function, pressing the read button for about one second on the normal measurement screen, PPL measurement screen, or auto measurement screen also changes the screen to the prism entry screen. Prism entry screen The prism entry screen can be switched from the parameter screen a. Change the screen to the parameter screen. b. Align the cursor ( ) to Prism layout. c. Press the selection button to switch the screen to the prism entry screen. 2 As necessary, designate the left-eye or right-eye lens. Press the L selection button or R selection button for the lens to be marked. It is possible to enter prism prescriptions for the both left-eye and right-eye lenses in a row before marking them. 62

73 OPERATING PROCEDURE Marking 3 Set the prism representation method with the coordinate system button in accordance with the prism representation method of the prism data on the prescription. Each the coordinate system button is pressed, the coordinate system toggles between the rectangular coordinate and polar coordinate systems. (XY) Used to select the rectangular coordinate system. Used to select the polar coordinate system. 4 Select the type of prism data to be entered with the prism data button and enter or modify the prim prescription with the UP or DOWN button. The indication of the UP and DOWN button changes according to the selected coordinate system. As soon as the coordinate system is selected, the indication of the UP and DOWN button changes accordingly. Each the UP or DOWN button is pressed, the preset prism data is changed in the specified increments. When the button is pressed, the prism data changes continuously. Prism data button UP/DOWN button 2 The target moves opposite to the direction by the amount of entered prism data. In the case of the rectangular coordinate representation (XY): (DU) Used to enter a prism power in the Base Down/Up direction with and. (IO) Used to enter a prism power in the Base In/Out direction with and. In the case of the polar coordinate representation ( ): ( Used to enter an absolute prism value ( : PRISM) with and. Used to enter the prism base direction ( : BASE) with and. Up to 20 of prism data expressed in polar coordinates can be entered. When the rectangular coordinate system is selected, the entry of data of even less than 20 may be rejected, or the prism data of the other prism base side* may be modified to confine the prism data to 20 expressed in polar coordinates. (* For example, when the prism data is modified in the Base IN/OUT direction, the prism data in the Base UP/DOWN direction may be modified.) 5 As necessary, enter the prism prescription of the other lens. Press the L selection button or R selection button to specify the left-eye or right-eye lens. Enter the prism prescription in the same manner. 63

74 OPERATING PROCEDURE Marking 6 Press the L selection button or R selection button to specify the left-eye or right-eye lens. 7 Set the lens on the nosepiece with the upper side of the lens towards the operator. CAUTION When marking lenses for prism prescriptions, be sure to set the lens with the upper side of the lens towards the operator. If the lens is set with its bottom side towards the operator, the marked lens does not follow the prescription. With the LM-600/LM-600P/LM-600PD, the zero-degree direction of the prism base is on the operator s left as viewed from the front. Be aware that the orientation of the lens set on the LM-600/LM-600P/LM-600PD is opposite in orientation of the lens set on a manual lensmeter or blocker. 8 Align the lens. Move the lens to align the target to the center of the alignment circle until the target changes from to (cross) and then changes from (cross) to (large cross). (large cross) represents that the lens is within an area of 0.8 mm in diameter from the optical center of the lens and the lens can be marked properly. 9 If the lens contains any cylindrical power, set the cylinder axis according to the prescription. While watching the axis value (A), turn the lens until the axis reading shows the cylinder axis on prescription. The current axis is also displayed at the upper right of the target. 10 Mark the lens. Press down the marking lever to mark the lens. When the read button is pressed at that time, the measured data is fixed. The saved measured data can be printed from the measurement mode screen. 11 As necessary, mark the other lens. Change the selected lens with the L selection button or R selection button. Mark the other lens in the same manner. To mark both lenses in a row, enter prism prescriptions for both lenses before making. 64

The prism prescription is printed out together with the other measured data. Printing the data clears the measured data but maintains preset prism prescriptions. Prism prescriptions 9 Press and hold the previous screen button to return to the measurement screen. Extended pressing of the button changes the icon display to the exit button. Releasing the button returns to the measurement screen. To mark lenses in a row, press the previous screen button to return to the prism entry screen once, and then enter prism prescriptions for the other lens. If measured data has been saved, press the clear button to clear the data in advance. 66

If the lens is set with the wrong side towards the operator, the marked lens does not follow prescription. For the LM-600/LM-600P/LM-600PD, the zero degree direction is on the operator s left. Be aware that the lens should be set with the upper side of the lens towards the operator, which is opposite in orientation of the lens with a manual lensmeter or a blocker. 4 While watching the prism values on the screen, move the lens until the values show the prescription. When the lens side is not specified (single state), the data is not written to the Eye Care card. There are parameters related to the indication, measurement, printing, and communication. The procedure for changing and checking each parameter setting is described as follows. 1 Display the parameter screen. Press and hold the measurement selection button until the icon changes to and release the button. 2 Display the page on which the parameter setting needs to be changed. Select the page on which the parameter setting needs to be changed with the forward page button or back page button. There are six pages (seven pages for the UV model). Each the read button is pressed, the icons change. Select the icon combination according to the operation. Pressing the read button changes the icons. 3 Move the cursor to the parameter to be changed. With the up button or down button, move the cursor ( ) to the parameter to be changed. 76

Com can be selected only when the abbe number is transmitted from a connected PC. When Com is selected, the abbe number through communication is set and displayed on the setting indication of the measurement screen. (In this case, it is displayed in black with yellow background.) Move the cursor to A, B, or C and press the selection button to increase the value. A is automatically selected at power-on. Set the abbe number that is usually used at A. 5 : Wavelength This is for selecting the measured data from the one to be obtained with the e-line wavelength ( nm) or that with the d-line wavelength ( nm). 78

101 3. OPERATION WHEN PERIPHERAL DEVICES ARE CONNECTED The LM-600/LM-600P/LM-600PD transmits data to an external device such as the NIDEK motorized refractor, computer, and Eye Care card system. The optional foot switch can be used instead of the read button to read measured data. Be sure to turn off each device before connecting the interface cable, etc. CAUTION Connecting the cable with power on may cause malfunction. 3.1 Connecting to the NIDEK Motorized Refractor (RT) or Computer Outline Any data on printout can be transmitted to the NIDEK motorized refractor (hereafter referred to as the RT) or a computer. The measured data transmitted to the RT is used as former lensmetory data (LM data) in subjective refraction. Connectable device: RT-2100 series, RT-5100 series Data transmitted to the computer can be managed by various database software. Bending the removed cap separates into two units. Cover the not-used connector with the cap. Bend it to separate. Connector cap Operating procedure 1 After measurement, press the print button. Perform operation in the same manner as the normal printing. See 2 OPERATING PROCEDURE (page 25) for details of the measuring procedure. When the LM-600/LM-600P/LM-600PD is connected to the RT, it receives a Data No. (ID No.). When the LM-600/LM-600P/LM-600PD is connected to the RT, the data No. (ID No.) is also printed. Disconnect the interface cable while pressing the button on the connector. In such cases when a number of lenses are measured in the Lab system, the foot switch allows for measurement while holding lenses both hands. The read button works with the foot switch connected. 105 4. MAINTENANCE 4.1 Troubleshooting In the event that the device does not work correctly, correct the problem according to the following table before contacting your authorized distributor. Symptom The LCD does not turn on. The LCD does not turn on (not clear) even though the power is on. The screen disappears suddenly. Data is not printed out. The printer runs, but the paper is blank. Data cannot be read even though the Eye Care card is inserted. Action The power cord may not be correctly connected. Reconnect it securely. The power switch may not have been turn on. Check the power switch. It seems that the display auto off function has been executed. Press a button to recall the ON state. The brightness may be darkly adjusted. Adjust the contrast knob. It seems that the display auto off function has been executed. Press a button to recall the ON state. Check the printer paper. If the paper has been used up, set new printer paper. The Printer parameter may be set to Off. Reset the parameter. The printer paper may be set with the wrong side up. Set it with the correct side up. The contact in the Eye Care card slot may be dirty. Clean it (see page 105). When an error occurs while data is read in the other device such as a refractor, clean its card reader. 4 If the symptom cannot be corrected with the above actions, contact NIDEK or your authorized distributor. 95

106 MAINTENANCE Error Messages and Countermeasures 4.2 Error Messages and Countermeasures If a message appears on the lower part of the screen, take measures according to the table below. Should a service visit be necessary, please prepare the details of the message and symptom along with the serial number of the device. A lens was on the nosepiece at power-on. After removing the lens, press the restart button to reboot the device. There is something which interrupts the measuring beam on the nosepiece at power-on. Check the nosepiece. Remove the dust and dirt from the protective glass. Press the restart button to reboot the device. The nosepiece for contact lenses is placed at power-on. Replace with the standard nosepiece, press the restart button to reboot the device. To measure a contact lens, press the execution button. There is something which interrupts the measuring beam on the nosepiece. Check the nosepiece. Remove the one which interrupts the measuring beam. The sphere value exceeds ±27 D. Check the power of the lens. The cylinder value exceeds ±11 D. Check the power of the lens. The ADD value exceeds 11 D. Check the power of the lens. The lens with the prism value exceeding 21 is on the nosepiece. Perform alignment of the lens or remove the lens. The print button was pressed with no printer paper set. Fill the printer paper. Printer paper runs out during printing Fill the printer paper. After the paper is filled, the printing continues. 96

Check the interface cable. Check that the connected device is turned on. Check that the parameters related to communication are correctly set. A request for data transmission was not sent from the AR, ARK, or RKT during printing by the connected AR, ARK, or RKT. Check the interface cable. Check the parameter settings on the AR, ARK, or RKT. Correct communication is not performed with the Eye Care card. Replace the Eye Care card and check if the communication is possible. CCD signals are not correct. Failure in the interior of the device. Contact NIDEK or your authorized distributor. UV-LED is not lit up. Failure in the interior of the device. Contact NIDEK or your authorized distributor. Significant change such as interference light occurred during measurement. Make the lens stable and perform measurement again. This message appears when following operations are performed in the condition that the R/L switch button is displayed blank. 1. The R/L selection button (blank) is pressed. 2. R or L can be switched automatically after the lens is measured and removed when the Auto R/L parameter is set to On. 4 Screen displayed at the time of overflow error The measured value at the time of overflow error is displayed in red and the red indication remains even after having been read. Also, auto read is disabled at the time of error. The measured value is displayed in red to indicate that the measured value is erroneous. If printing is performed, erroneous measured values are denoted with an asterisk. The asterisks are printed to indicate that the measured values are erroneous. 97

108 MAINTENANCE Replacing Printer Paper (LM-600P/LM-600PD only) 4.3 Replacing Printer Paper (LM-600P/LM-600PD only) When a red line appears on the side of the printer paper, it means that the paper is running short. In such a case, stop using the printer and replace the roll with a new one. Do not run the printer while the printer paper is not set. It may ruin the printer head. Do not pull the printer paper forcefully. Doing so could cause malfunction of the printer. 1 Pull the printer cover towards the operator. Slide the printer cover lever at the rear of the device to open the cover. 2 Remove any remaining printer paper. When replacing the printer paper, be sure not to touch the printer head on the upper CAUTION part inside the printer paper holder. The printer head can get very hot and cause burns. 98

109 MAINTENANCE Replacing Printer Paper (LM-600P/LM-600PD only) 3 Set a new printer paper.. Set the paper as shown in the figure to the right. Leave the end of the paper out from the cover. When the roll is set upside down, the data is not printed correctly. Make sure that the printer paper is set straight and the core of the roll paper is not misaligned. The printer paper may not feed properly. 4 Close the printer cover. Press the right and left sides of the printer cover to close the printer. 4 Make sure that the cover is closed securely. If the cover is closed incompletely, the auto-cutter may not operate properly. 99

110 MAINTENANCE Ink Refilling 4.4 Ink Refilling Ink cartridge When markings become faint, replace the ink cartridge. Use the specified cartridge for refills. Replace the optional red or blue ink cartridge in the same manner. 1 Press the tip of the ink cartridge and remove the C-ring with tweezers. During work, take enough care not to lose the C- ring. It is recommended to remove the C-ring with tweezers so as not to lose. C-ring When the C-ring is removed, the spring and cartridge fall off. Take care not to lose them. Marker holder Spring ink cartridge 2 Insert the spring and the new cartridge into the marker holder, and set the C-ring in the groove on the end of the ink cartridge. Match the shape of the cartridge to the hole of the marker holder by rotating until the cartridge can be inserted smoothly. Use the C-ring which is removed in the procedure 1 or the one attached to the cartridge as a replacement part. C-ring 100

If dust settles on the protective glass, it may affect the measurement accuracy. Clean the protective glass under the nosepiece with a blower brush. CAUTION The dust may include sharp particles. Wiping them without the blower brush damages to the lens coating. Be sure to remove any dust on the protective glass with the blower brush. 1 Remove the nosepiece. Nosepiece Protective glass 2 Clean the protective glass. Remove any dust on the glass with a blower brush. 3 If any dust remains, wipe gently with a lens cleaning cloth. Take special care not to scratch the protective glass. Flaws on the glass substantially lower the reliability of measurement. 102

113 MAINTENANCE Adjusting the Lens Table 4.6 Adjusting the Lens Table Adjust the feel of the lens table lever movement to be heavy or light. 1 Remove the lens table lever. Pull it out straight. Adjustable screw Setscrew 2 Loosen the setscrew on the adjustable screw with a flatblade screwdriver. Lens table lever 3 Rotate the adjustable screw to adjust the feel of the lens table lever movement. Rotate the screw without rotating the center axis. 4 Rotate the screw clockwise. The lens table lever feels heavier. Lighter Heavier Rotate the screw counterclockwise. The lens table lever feels lighter. The effective rotation range of the adjustable screw is one rotation, either clockwise or counterclockwise. Even if the lever is rotated counterclockwise by more than one rotation, the lever does not become lighter. Moreover, continuing to rotate the screw counterclockwise (about five rotations or more) removes it. It may cause device malfunction. 4 Tighten the setscrew on the adjustable screw. 5 Attach the lens table lever and check the lever movement. Align the lens table lever attachment hole with the center axis and push it as far as it will go. Repeat the adjustment until the lever movement feels proper. 103

114 MAINTENANCE Cleaning 4.7 Cleaning Cleaning the device exterior When the cover or panel of the device becomes dirty, wipe with a soft cloth. For severe stains, immerse the cloth in a neutral detergent, wring well, and wipe. Finally wipe with a dry and soft cloth. Never use an organic solvent such as paint thinner. CAUTION It may ruin the surface of the device. Lightly wipe the exterior of the LCD. Scratches or malfunction of the display may result. Never use a sponge or cloth soaked in water. The water may leak into the inside of the device and cause device malfunction Cleaning the printer (LM-600P/LM-600PD only) Following an extended period of use, the paper feed on the printer auto-cutter becomes dirty due to cutting residue. If left as is, failure of the auto-cutter may occur. So perform cleaning of the printer. 1 Open the printer cover and remove the printer paper roll. See 4.3 Replacing Printer Paper (LM-600P/LM- 600PD only) (page 98). Auto-cutter 2 Put the nozzle of an electric vacuum cleaner on the auto-cutter to vacuum the residue. Do not blow the residue. If may cause failure due to the residue becoming attached to the internal operation mechanism. 3 Set the printer paper as it was. 104
