Alternative Photo Processes and a few other cool projects in Photography Terri Taylor Hazen High School
Keeping it Simple Sun Printing: (aka Photogram) Working with photosensitive paper is the first step in understanding how a photograph is made. You can buy 30 sheets of 8x10 for around $15.00 through amazon. Great site for information (prices are higher for materials)
The Chemistry of Cyanotypes Using two chemicals Potassium ferricyanide and Ferric ammonium citrate. (follow the directions on the bottles for amounts and application process) Please note this chemical process is light sensitive. You will need to work in a dark room. We use a simple bug light bulb in a clamp lamp for our set up.
Bug light $3.45, Clamp light $6.99
You will need measuring spoons, one plastic or glass mixing beaker and two empty coffee containers for mixing your chemicals. Store your mixed chemicals in a coffee can to protect them from light between uses.
Set up for Cyanotypes Mix the chemical in coffee cans with duct tape on the lid to seal out the light. Each chemical is labeled. Chemicals can store up to two months in the fridge. The bristle brush gives a interesting effect on the edges, while the sponge brush is smooth. We do not use a metal or glass rods for application. (they get broken or bent) Chemicals are combined in small amounts in a plastic beaker. Hydrogen Peroxide is used in the final rinse (more on that later)
Cyanotypes Making your negative. Choose your image Meet Beatrice the perfect model.
Making the Negative After choosing the photograph Move your photograph into Photoshop (free 30 day trial per ) there are many apps that will do negative or inverse images available, for free. Firisoft is my fav. In Photoshop use command I will invert, then image to mode to gray scale.

Printing your negative This film can go through the copier and printer.
Paper for Photographic wet processes Heavy watercolor paper is preferred If economics inhibit you from buying higher quality watercolor paper, card stock, and even thicker print making papers will work. We have played with handmade paper and some tracing papers for interesting effects. It all depends on the creative level and acceptance of failure learning opportunities.
Exposure Process Once the negative is complete, in a darkroom or low light space, place your negative on the dry treated paper. Use glass or Plexiglas to secure the negative in place. Take your negative, paper, and plexi, to a sunny spot. The exposure process takes about minutes.
Wash/Neutralizing Once the image turns a silver(ish) carefully return to the low light/darkroom. Place image under running water for a few minutes, then into a hydrogen peroxide bath (1 tbl. In 4 cups of water) The photographic image will turn a beautiful Prussian blue.

Van Dyke Photography Much like the cyanotype you are working with chemistry and light. Chemicals needed Ferric Ammonium Citrate, Tartaric Acid, Silver Nitrate, and water. This is a basic silver salt process of exposure. (think of it like your grandma s silver exposed to air will tarnish, the salt accelerates the process)
Van Dyke Kit If you are not able to work with your science teacher (great grant or even ASIP option) you may choose to go with the kit compound. Cost around $30.00.
Van Dyke Process As with the cyanotype you are combining chemicals in the dark/low light room. Please follow instructions. This process of exposure is same as cyanotypes. After the Van Dyke turns a dark brownish usually minutes, rinse for approx.. 3 minutes till image appears clearly.
Other cool chemicals on the market
Kitchen Sink Photography (film processing) Brew your Developer(ingredients) 8 oz. water 4 tsp. instant coffee crystals (or mg Vit C) 2 tsp. washing soda stir till everything is dissolved, drop in film for 30 sec. (shaking gently) Stop Bath, simple water and 2 tsp. white vinegar Fixer, water with 1tsp salt
Making Your Own Photo Paper This website is excellent otography_page.htm Most supplies can be purchased through amazon or your pharmaceutical dept. Working with your Chemistry teacher is cool too.
Nature Surface Printing Get the largest leaf you can find. Soak the leaf in alcohol to remove some of the chlorophyll. Using a cotton swab rub iodine on one side (in the dark) Place a high contrast negative on the leaf with plexi or glass to secure. Put in high sun. (do not rinse, spay with fixative)
